Chapter 1505: Chapter 723: Volunteering to Deliver the Horse
In Sancha Town after all the students were let out for summer vacation, the streets are usually deserted with hardly anyone in sight. Even on market days, it’s only lively for a short while in the morning. People come to buy things but don’t linger, afraid that if they return late, the day will be too hot.
However, on the day of college application, the streets become much more bustling, with many parents accompanying their students, taking the opportunity also to attend the market.
Before the usually quiet campus buzzed with activity again, Yan Fei was already swaggering around with Xu Xiaoyan, occasionally glancing beneath the old trees’ roots to see if there’s anything there.
He didn’t walk far before he stopped, speaking with certainty: "There must be Pa Cha under here."
Xu Xiaoyan smiled knowingly from behind, glanced around to see no one’s there, gave him a push: "Hurry up, we’re here to fill out the college applications!"
Yan Fei asserted confidently: "Digging up some Pa Cha to fry them at home for a meal, didn’t we always do this before! It’s still early now, who would be..."
Before he could finish, a teacher came around the corner and called out from a distance upon seeing them: "Boss Yan is here so early, Xu Xing is here too, huh! You’re here to help Boss Yan with his college preferences, right?"
Xu Xiaoyan responded with a smile, and when the teacher passed by, she quickly pulled Yan Fei to proceed.
The campus of No.2 High School is built on the site of historical relics, it’s much larger than other high schools. The two chose paths less traveled, winding around just like when they were little, peeking into this corner and that, occasionally digging out a Pa Cha, or eyeing a pile of empty wine bottles in some niche...
The two walked through this familiar and quiet campus, their hands unknowingly intertwined...
It wasn’t until the sound of a group of students’ laughter reached them that Xu Xiaoyan quietly withdrew her hand from Yan Fei’s.
"Let’s go, time to fill out the preferences." Yan Fei said with a smile, taking the girl around another corner to bypass the group of students noisily discussing how to fill out their applications.
On the short walk towards the classrooms, they encountered several pairs of students standing under the shade of the trees talking; this made Xu Xiaoyan feel less embarrassed.
Perhaps because they’ll soon part ways, the students were no longer intimidated by Yan Fei, the big boss, with some even taking the initiative to greet him and chat for a bit.
There were also boys and girls huddling together, discussing applying to the same university— they’re graduating, no need for secrecy now, just like the pairs under the trees outside, everyone was open and uninhibited.
Of course, there were more groups discussing which colleges to apply for, and some students, knowing their grades were not great, were sharing information about various schools, such as ones that might accept them as long as they passed the threshold...
Seeing Yan Fei, An Changhe was a bit excited. He, who usually talks incessantly, was surprisingly quiet today—by now, even the slow-witted realized how significant the opportunity Yan Fei had promised, to provide him a job if he didn’t get into college, was to him.
It wasn’t just a chance to make money. After the exams, carrying a part of the paper out and writing down the answers by memory to estimate the scores, he was shocked by his results. After the shock came ecstasy, and after several days of silence at home, he realized that his excellent performance was due solely to a single sentence from Yan Fei.
Yan Fei vaguely understood his feelings, not because Yan Fei was very experienced, but because he had seen too many people so grateful that they didn’t know what to say; they could only respond with a silly grin—like the first selected impoverished households from the village, who searched everywhere for him. When they found him, they didn’t know what to say, as if just to see him and leave a goofy smile before departing.
"Which university are you planning to apply to?" Seeing An Changhe’s somewhat helpless look, Yan Fei took the initiative to ask.
"I haven’t thought about it yet, been conflicting at home for a few days, still can’t believe my own scores," An Changhe smiled sheepishly. "What about you? Which university are you planning to apply to?"
"Provincial Agricultural University, I told you long ago!" Yan Fei laughed.
"Then how about I also apply there? I could work in your fields in the future, to avoid being unassigned after graduation with no job," An Changhe said looking at Yan Fei.
"Get lost, don’t talk nonsense," Yan Fei said irritably. "You’ve worked so hard for five or six years to get good grades, and now you want to go to the Agricultural University? Our local Agricultural University is just average; applying there would be a waste! At the very least, you should apply to a key university and see the world."
Yan Fei’s colorful language made An Changhe relax a lot, but then he gave a more definitive answer: "Then I’ll apply to China Agricultural University, that should be fine, right?"
"Did you discuss it with your family?" Yan Fei asked.
"They don’t understand either, there’s no one to discuss with, I just told them I can definitely get into a university, and they’re overjoyed, getting ready to slaughter chickens in celebration," An Changhe said with self-deprecating laughter. "These days, they’re discussing where to borrow the tuition. The cattle we’re raising are too young and not worth too much, it might not be enough."
"Why not come to me!" Yan Fei laughed heartily. "If the scholarship money you get isn’t enough for the tuition, I’ll give you a ’gan loan,’ no cash interest. When you go out of town, just bring me some local specialty as interest when you come back for vacation."
Originally, there were no scholarships in Sancha Town, but since the arrival of Boss Yan, scholarships came into being. The facility would provide some money as a reward for students from the town’s schools who performed well in the High School Entrance Examination or college entrance exams, not much, but it was meant to encourage them to study hard.
