Chapter 1217: Chapter 607 Inquiring_2
By the end, Yan Fei was truly helpless. After coming out, Professor He even urged him, "It’s okay, you’ve done your best, and he’s pretty happy about it. By the way, aren’t you staying here for dinner?"
"I really can’t." Yan Fei chuckled. "I brought something for my wife, I’m making her some Hot and Spicy Soup. Oh dear, school’s about to end, I need to go pick her up."
After saying that, he sprinted to his car, waved his hand, and said, "Teacher He, I’ll come to see you again when I have time, gotta go now."
He drove off in a cloud of smoke.
As he got close to the Provincial University Law School, Yan Fei remembered his wife’s instructions and parked the car a bit farther away, then walked in to pick her up.
Seeing Yan Fei approach, Xu Xiaoyan was startled, "Didn’t you say you were busy at home these days? How come you have time to come out?"
Yan Fei lied without changing his expression, "Busy? Just had some higher-ups visit our site, they left right after taking a look. You know what our site is like, it’s the same whether I’m there or not."
Xu Xiaoyan couldn’t help but laugh, giving him a playful glare, "You still have the cheek to say that, just know how to slack off...."
The slacker boss got in the car with his boss lady, first pulling out a bag of popcorn, "Someone gave this to us, I brought some over. Does it make you think of that popping sound of popcorn from our town...?"
Yan Fei was talking about those old-fashioned street popcorn poppers, a tightly sealed little iron can kind of thing, corn inside, constantly rotated on the fire.
When it was finally ready and they opened it, the burst of high pressure from inside could be heard from one end of the street to the other, sending popcorn flying about thirty feet away—of course, those who had seen it knew, the popcorn was caught with a long cloth bag, otherwise it would be scattered all over the sky.
"Humph!" The girl haughtily grabbed the popcorn, pinched one, and stuffed it in her mouth, "What’s there to miss, you think they don’t have this in the Provincial City?"
"Oh!" Yan Fei nodded, starting the car, "Haven’t really noticed, heh."
"You haven’t noticed?" Xu Xiaoyan gave him a meaningful glance with her watery large eyes, "Do you think the popcorn at Yangyang’s company, how did they first start making it? By the way, Yangyang often asks about you, saying once their reservoir is finished, she’s coming to work for you, alright?"
Yan Fei, looking intently at a traffic police at the intersection, replied casually, "I don’t lack people on my side, let her work for whomever she wants to... Look at that traffic police, still a familiar face, let’s go say hi!"
The girl’s expression suddenly softened again, she pinched a popcorn and popped it into his mouth, "Stop messing around, don’t forget you’re driving without a license. What if they ask to see your driver’s license, what will you do then?"
Yan Fei feigned bravado and chuckled, "What’s there to be scared of, watch me. He definitely won’t check my license..."
As they were speaking, the car got close to the traffic police, and he stuck out his head, "Brother traffic police, hard work! I’ve brought some homemade popcorn, here, have a taste..."
"Oh, it’s you, big boss, coming to visit your students again, huh!" That traffic cop remembered this Mercedes Benz S600 guy, who could drag cars up the sidewalk with immense strength. Once seen, he’s hard to forget!
Seeing that Yan Fei was indeed slowing down to hand out popcorn, the young officer promptly gestured with his hands, "No no no, thank you, I’m on duty! Don’t bother, school’s letting out, lots of people, better drive on!"
Upon hearing this, Yan Fei also stopped his popcorn-passing gesture and smilingly said, "Okay then, next time I see you, we can talk. You’re busy, I’m off!"
"Alright!" The traffic cop was also quite playful, shouting in the tone of a waiter from a TV drama, which made Xu Xiaoyan inside the car couldn’t help but laugh uncontrollably.
"You’re nothing but trouble!" As the car passed the intersection, the girl gently pinched Yan Fei, "Wait and see what happens when they find out you don’t have a license, what will you do then?"
"Don’t worry." Yan Fei was brimming with confidence. "Just on my face value, I guarantee he won’t even think of checking my driver’s license before I get the official one, believe it or not?"
"I don’t believe it!" the girl rolled her eyes dramatically.
"If you don’t believe it, let’s make a bet," Yan Fei chuckled. "Bet a hundred kisses..."
"You rascal, what’s on your mind all day!" she glared at him again. "Just drive properly and hurry back to cook. Oh, I’ve learned how to make Griddle Cakes now, you love them, right? I’ll make some for you later and show you my skills!"
"No rush on the Griddle Cakes," Yan Fei laughed too. His wife and he were truly soulmates. He came to surprise her with Hot and Spicy Soup while she was thinking of making him Griddle Cakes, which he loved. "I brought quite a few things, I’ll make you some Hot and Spicy Soup."
The girl was startled for a moment, then looked out the car window and suddenly leaned over and slapped his face lightly. Then, with her cheeks flushed and head bowed, she whispered softly, "You’re so busy, I was just saying it casually, and you’re actually making Hot and Spicy Soup! Don’t do this in the future... Focus on your important tasks..."
That was what she said, but the joy that shone in her watery eyes made him feel incredibly sweet inside!
A bowl of Hot and Spicy Soup led to whispered conversations in the middle of the night. Although they were two people who grew up together and knew each other well, there was always endless things to say when they met.
The next day, the girl felt too lazy to go to school and lay in bed, watching the silly boy close by, "How about I take a day off today and hang out with you?"
Yan Fei was tempted but eventually resisted and said, "Don’t take a day off. Hurry to school. I’ll handle some other things today and come back for your Griddle Cake at lunch!"
"Alright then!" the girl was a bit disappointed but perked up immediately. "I’m telling you, my classmates praise my cooking skills; you might eat and never want to leave!"
"Mm-hm!"
After sending his wife off to school, Yan Fei took out his phone and dialed Wang Jiuming’s number: "Senior Brother Wang, what are you up to?"
"Busy? I’m barely awake," the voice on the other end was still groggy. "Who’s this? Oh... Xiao Fei! Are you in Provincial City?"
"Yes! I just arrived and thought I’d come over to chat and ask you for some advice on a few things!" Yan Fei said cheerfully.
"Sure, come on over!" Wang Jiuming’s voice got louder. "Had some drinks last night and haven’t gotten out of bed yet, but I’ll get up when you come over!"
Yan Fei chuckled and hung up the phone, then drove straight to Wang Jiuming’s place.
Upon arrival, of course, the talk was about the lab, but this time it was not about how to build the experiment: "Senior Brother Wang, you know a lot of people; if I set up a lab, could you help me bring in a couple of talents in this field?"
Wang Jiuming immediately fell into deep thought, "That... I can’t think of anyone right off the bat. Hang on, let me think about it some more..."
The real reason, however, was largely due to Yan Fei.
Although there’s a saying that making nuclear bombs is less profitable than selling tea eggs, those who have a chance to work in government labs rarely want to leave, given the excellent conditions for research there.
Yan Fei’s was a yet non-existent private lab with an uncertain research direction—everything was still up in the air, which made it sound unreliable to anyone.
So after waiting a while and seeing Wang Jiuming’s furrowed brows, Yan Fei simply said, "How about this, Senior Brother Wang, you think of anyone who might be persuaded to join. Let’s not rush to recruit just yet; I’ll set things up first. A plane tree must be planted before the phoenix comes; I haven’t even sown the seeds, so it’s tough looking for people now."
Wang Jiuming immediately laughed, "You could have said so earlier! Now, without an actual lab, it’s hard for me to recruit two people for you. Actually, you might want to discuss it with Provincial University Law School first, let them help you with the setup. Once there’s something substantial, it’ll be much easier to find people!"
It seems I really need to get things rolling first!
