"Yes, I was thinking of starting with the basics," Yan Fei nodded. "I came here to ask about establishing a laboratory and whether there’s anything I need to handle..."

"You don’t need to worry about that, as long as you can attract people and are willing to spend money on equipment, everything is negotiable," Professor He encouraged him. "In research, you must have the spirit of a newbie unafraid of challenges, but you also need to assess your capabilities and proceed according to your financial situation. Actually, coming to me is putting the cart before the horse; don’t you already have talents at your place?"

Once Yan Fei heard that, he knew whom he was referring to and responded irritably, "Don’t mention it, Senior Brother Liu is simply indescribable. I asked him to supervise, and instead, he insists on being in the shed every day, disappearing so often I barely see him. Since he’s willing to work diligently, let him do it. Just right, isn’t he restless anyway? Pass the current laboratory tasks directly to him and let him take charge; if it needs more funds, he can come to you, and for the rest, let him tinker on his own!"

After chatting with Professor He for a while, Yan Fei stood up and said, "I’ll go see Teacher Qi, I’ve been busy these days and haven’t called to check on him; how has his health been lately?"

"Okay!" Professor He stood up. "He’s still the same, alright if he takes it slow, but I’m concerned about him as the new experimental field is a bit far, and I’m afraid his health might not hold up... He’s always been restless, his whole life, and now there’s nothing that can be done about it!"

"Why not just let him retire?" Yan Fei suggested.

"Do you think we haven’t considered retirement at our age?" Professor He suddenly laughed. "We can’t sit idle, being called a professor or expert; we’d feel guilty if we didn’t accomplish anything worthy of the title!"

Yan Fei had nothing to say; he truly couldn’t grasp the mindset of the older generation.

As they approached the door, an idea suddenly came to him: "What do you think about letting Teacher Qi come to my place? I will also have a laboratory, and although it will be researching different topics, it’s still related to agriculture. Besides, I’ve got space there; how about giving him two tael of land to experiment with something?"

"That’s a good idea!" Professor He’s eyes lit up, but then he deflated. "I suppose he won’t go, though! How could your private small lab compare with Provincial City? There are many universities here; even if our school doesn’t have certain equipment, other schools might. It definitely won’t be as convenient at your place."

That was true, Yan Fei was just planning to start a small laboratory to see how it goes. The research direction and Professor Qi’s were worlds apart, and if he had to fully equip it, he might burn through all his funds.

"Let’s just bring it up and see," Yan Fei decided to act on his plan. "Whether he goes or not is up to him; what about my place? If we’re missing something, we can slowly acquire it. Besides, you guys obtain equipment through official channels; I’m using my own money, so I can spend it however I want, which might even be more convenient. Maybe there are things you can’t get, but I can buy them with some money!"

Laughing at the remark, Professor He said, "Do you think an individual’s effort can surpass our collective ability? Any possible and usable means would already be considered and used by someone. But sure, if you really want to try, that’s fine since you’re wealthy. Come on, I’ll go with you and help you out with a few more words."

As it turned out, even with Professor He’s help, it was no use. As soon as Professor Qi heard Yan Fei’s unreliable idea, he was amused: "You really dare to dream, let’s talk about it when your laboratory gets off the ground! My health is still good enough to keep working for a couple more years. When the day comes that I can’t keep up, I’ll consider retiring there."
