Chapter 1111: Chapter 572: Caught a Fish_2
By the time he arrived here, Yan Fei was the undisputed local emperor, and naturally, all these laborers knew that such a base wasn’t built for them to eat well, sleep well, and have good days; everything was for the service of Yan Fei.
The number of cattle here had significantly decreased, leaving only the good breeding bulls. Across the vast land, a variety of crops were planted, some of which were not found even at Sancha River—different climates, of course, produced many different crops.
Some were seeds specially purchased by Yan Fei for planting, while others were simply fruits he had bought and eaten while visiting the south, carelessly discarding the cores which were then picked up and meticulously cultivated into fruit trees by someone.
Here, Yan Fei no longer needed to hide. The laborers, eager to please him, knew well that everybody could live quietly and peacefully only if he was in a good mood. Allowing him to be upset would be more than just miserable—originally, one who could never learn to speak properly was sent by him to learn "dragon language" from dinosaurs, and probably had long been transformed into dust.
So, nowadays, these people imposed rigorous standards upon themselves. Learning Chinese wasn’t enough; mastering the Sancha River dialect was deemed a success.
While Yan Fei was feasting and drinking, he was also arranging tasks, "How are the grass seeds you’ve collected prepared?"
No.1 Coolie, standing by awaiting instructions, immediately answered, "Everything’s ready, including what we collected earlier, making a total of more than one thousand four hundred catties."
Yan Fei nodded, "Hmm, that should be enough. But still prepare more, to avoid troubles if it turns out not to be enough. Also, make sure those mushrooms and earthworms for breeding are all ready; I’ll need them in a few days."
No.1 Coolie continued, "All prepared as per your instructions, not including the first batch as they were too big. We have also gathered enough Fungus Seedlings; we estimate that three to five hundred mu of greenhouses should suffice."
Yan Fei was quite satisfied, "How are the giant salamanders and the sturgeons that I had you raise doing?"
No.1 Coolie suddenly looked distressed, "There’s still not much success; they keep growing in size, and even when placed in small pools, it doesn’t work. We can only try and control it by reducing their food supply, but the results are not very noticeable."
Yan Fei’s mood improved, not minding too much, "Hmm, keep working on it. It’d be better to breed ones that don’t grow big early."
Elsewhere, breeding fish usually targeted the bigger, the better. But here, at Yan Fei’s, his peculiar requirement was the smaller, the better.
The cattle ranch had also subscribed to some magazines about breeding, and Yan Fei would often visit the Provincial City, thus he was rather familiar with the domestic developments in this field.
A trending term now was "specialty breeding": those who fed pigs were not as good as those who raised turtles, those who grew crops were not as good as those who grew fruit trees, and those who grew fruit trees were not as comparable to those cultivating medicinal herbs—the rarer, the more profitable.
Yan Fei felt that with such great resources at his disposal, he could consider something different. Of course, these were all initial considerations; actually implementing them at Sancha River was still a far-off matter.
Not to mention, just getting a wildlife breeding license was extraordinarily difficult.
While eating, he suddenly remembered something, "By the way, if I were to plant apple trees around here, would they grow?"
No.1 Coolie, face still grim, responded, "We don’t really understand fruit trees, but the apple trees previously planted here grew quite well—although it’s still hard to say whether they will bear fruit. From my little experience, though, the situation doesn’t look very promising!"
"If they don’t grow well, they don’t grow well. Why is the situation not very promising?" Yan Fei murmured casually.
"Yes, yes!" No.1 Coolie quickly admitted his mistake.
"Forget it, it doesn’t really matter. I’ll see for myself when the time comes!" Yan Fei said offhandedly. "Alright, you all go rest. I’ll take a walk elsewhere after I finish eating. You can tidy up these things tomorrow..."
After a grand feast, he took off into the sky, joyously flying or playfully frolicking in the sea; a whole expanse of activities guaranteed to uplift one’s spirits.
His question about the apple trees was not arbitrary. So many apple trees were now planted in Sancha River County, and they all started bearing fruit. However, the issue was that, from the look of things, by the time autumn arrived, those trees might all be turned into firewood for every household.
Although the fruits of these trees were not particularly tasty, they had grown for several years and it was their prime time to bear fruit. If there were a way to turn these fruitless trees into treasures, that would indeed be a great deed.
Originally, Yan Fei wouldn’t have been concerned with so much, but now that the township and county were supportive of him, he felt there were certain things he could conveniently do just by lifting a finger, so why not?
There was no need to think of his thoughts as highly noble, nor to see himself as a savior. As ’Zi’ once said, if you could do a good deed effortlessly and without any detriment to your own interests, then why not just do it?
This ’Zi’ wasn’t Laozi, Confucius, or Mencius, but the teacher from Sancha River Elementary School who talked about the theory of "harming others does not benefit oneself."
Of course, if it were Old Niu from the cement factory, he probably wouldn’t think as simply as Yan Fei. Based on his experience with Yan Fei, he wasn’t too easygoing either; if you constantly do good deeds, you also have to prevent people from taking advantage and begrudging you if you later stop doing them.
