Chapter 111: Chapter 52: Street Tour_1

Catching Devil Frogs was a breeze, as the area around was already explored and he could come and go as he pleased.

He found the homemade short gun, waited until the frog swarm dispersed, and positioned himself behind a solitary Devil Frog.

The Devil Frog, whilst rotund, had very sharp reactions. Even though it couldn’t see what was behind it, the moment Yan Fei appeared, it instinctively jumped. However, Yan Fei was already positioned and as soon as he appeared, he aimed for its large head. Despite its jump, it couldn’t alter its fate of being pierced. It struggled flipping about, hooked on the short gun.

Nice craftsmanship.

Yan Fei mused.

Typically, rural children play with such a thing when they’re young. They take some wire or a bicycle spoke, sharpen one end, and tie it onto a bamboo stick to make a frog spearing weapon.

This was a purely rural little toy made for amusement. Even when caught by the pile, the frogs were rarely eaten. Once brought home, they were usually fed to the ducks.

Apart from spearing frogs, there were digging for field mice, catching snakes, catching eels, catching beetles, shooting sparrows with slingshots, stealthily roasting green soybeans, wheat, corn cobs etc. The rural naughty children didn’t have many toys to play with, apart from playing mud pies, they had nothing else to do. So, they wrecked havoc on their surroundings. As long as it was farming idle time, these little pests, as young as toddlers, to pre-teens, were a nuisance. Apart from doing some chores like looking after the sheep or cows, they would wreck whatever they saw.

Yan Fei didn’t play with these many things during his childhood, he just watched other kids play. Partly because he didn’t often go to the countryside, and even when he did, his grandfather kept a close eye on him, limiting his playtime.

But now, he could indulge himself with these gigantic Devil Frogs. He could spear them however he wanted.

But after catching two, he no longer found it interesting. They were everywhere and there wasn’t a challenge.

The pot was still full of meat, he had only slaughtered one Iguanodon, and there was still plenty of its meat left. He cut the meat into strips and hung it, kept the meat soup in a large basin. Then he skinned the Devil Frogs and prepared them to be put in the pot.

One Devil Frog weighed almost ten to fifteen catties, even when cleaned it weighed around six to seven catties. Two of them could fill a big pot.

Although he never fell sick because of food, Yan Fei was still careful. He would thoroughly cook food that he hadn’t eaten before to ensure there were no hygiene issues.

Original white and tender frog meat, together with various seasonings, a few bright red chili peppers thrown in, sprinkled with some soy sauce, covered with a pot lid, and the wood in the stove adjusted appropriately, he could then disregard it.

He could continue exploring the new island.

This island was henceforth referred to as Toad Island.

Actually, it’s only after starting school that we learned to call frogs as frogs, before that we always called frogs as toads. As for the term "toad", there are no other names, it is simply called a toad.

Once again, when flying near the swamp of Toad Island, Yan Fei spotted several Rapators sneaking around, causing mischief. They always kept an eye on this place, and the moment the frog horde dispersed, these creatures would begin their shenanigans.

Not interested in watching these Rapators hunt anymore, Yan Fei casually changed into a Terrestrisuchus and strutted around leisurely.

The Rapators on this island were the most formidable and Yan Fei couldn’t find any particular meat-eating dinosaurs that could be a threat. At this point, a Terrestrisuchus had free rein on the island. The forest housed a variety of peculiar insects and snakes, but the Terrestrisuchus had nothing to fear from them. Its armor wasn’t just there for show, and snakes likely couldn’t penetrate it.

The snakes in the dinosaur world were also quite large, ones he had seen were around three meters long. Startled by the Terrestrisuchus, they ran away quickly and disappeared in an instant.

Loafing around he ended up at the edge of a small lake. Drawing from past experiences, Yan Fei wouldn’t impulsively run into the lake. The water here was very clear. Observing the surrounding area, he noticed some gray-black figures lying at the bottom of shallow water.

Unable to figure out what these dimly seen black creatures were, all he could make out was that they were large and certainly not fish. Yan Fei decided to ignore them for now. As long as they stayed in the water and didn’t come ashore, he didn’t need to investigate. He’d study them slowly in the future when he had time.

After exploring for a while and finding nothing special, he returned to eat.

After all, transforming into a Terrestrisuchus and making a big lap around the island, he had gotten even more hungry.

The frog meat tasted quite good. For Yan Fei, who was astonishingly gluttonous, changing tastes was good to avoid monotony. His own culinary skills were fair, he just let the pot stew half the day, not paying attention to the fine details of cooking.

While eating, he realized that his seasonings were almost out, so after finishing his meal, instead of going to Toad Island, he decided to go shopping for spices on the street.

Something didn’t seem right as soon as he arrived on the street.

He’d been out on Toad Island for almost a day, and students should still be in their third class of the day. Normally, the streets should be empty, but there was a large crowd gathered on the west side of the street. People lined both sides of the street, watching something entertaining as if waiting for a very important person, creating quite a buzz.

Yan Fei wasn’t interested in these spectacles. He was originally planning to go directly to buy seasonings, but when he glanced over and made eye contact, he couldn’t leave.

I had originally thought there was some sort of dispute, but what was with those two fellows wearing pointed hats and bearing placards on their chests? Was this some sort of public criticism meeting?

The thing is, upon a closer look, I actually recognized one of them. Wasn’t that Heizi, Xiaohei’s younger brother?

Xiaohei’s family wasn’t one to seek attention in town, but his dad was somewhat renowned. He used to be the tycoon of the cattle market, he knew a lot of people. Although Xiaohei had taken over, he didn’t let down his father’s reputation and was doing well. Who was so daring as to parade his brother around town?

Upon closer inspection, I couldn’t help but to chuckle.

Hands tied behind his back, Heizi wore a pointed hat made from newspaper on his head. The placard on his chest bore six big words: "I gamble, I’m guilty!".

The placard was written in red ink, looking bloody and particularly eye-catching. The person of a similar age to Heizi standing beside him was in the same situation. Many of the people following them were acquaintances of Yan Fei, including Xiaohei, Heizi’s brother.

Two elders led the procession, both dressed respectably. One of them held a stick in hand, giving a lash and asking, "Still considering sneaking off to gamble?" after each swing.

Heizi and his companion, after each hit, had to lift their heads to shout, "Not anymore!".

Afters another hit of the stick, the elder asked again, "Do you realize you’ve disgraced us?"

"We know!"

...

The two getting beaten put on brave faces. If it weren’t for the look of utter distress on Xiaohei’s face behind them, Yan Fei would have broken into laughter.

Following Xiaohei, a few familiar young faces showed similar expressions of torment. Whether to pity or to scorn the two lads was up for debate as either way it was an uncomfortable sight.

Yan Fei followed behind inconspicuously, gradually understanding the cause of all this. Heizi and a fellow named Da Zhan had snuck off to gamble again and probably lost over a thousand yuan each. They hadn’t gambled locally, but had sneaked off to Car and Horse Store instead.

Car and Horse Store was located between the Paper Factory of L County and Sancha River Town, located by the highway at the junction of the two counties, thus it was more developed than Sancha River Town.

The reason why the phrase "they went again" was used is that this was far from the first time; there had already been two prior incidents. They were small matters though; a scolding and beating at home had sufficed.

However, this time both of them had lost quite a lot of money. Afraid to return home, they lingered in hiding for days. It was only after they ran out of food and drink that they had no choice but to return, only to be caught by their families. Having disappeared for a few days, their families had already caught wind of their antics and were seething with anger. They were never going to let them off easy.

Da Zhan hailed from the countryside, his father used to own a kiln and was quite well off. The better off they were, the more worried they were their child would fall into bad habits like gambling, hence the moment Da Zhan’s father heard the news, he and Da Zhan’s uncles and brothers didn’t hesitate to tie him up.

Upon seeing this, Heizi’s father thought, "Great, this method isn’t bad at all." It was likely to work better than sending them to the local police station. Like monkey see, monkey do, he called Xiaohei over and they tied up Heizi as well.

And so, that is how we ended up like this.

Yan Fei listened to the bystanders explain the situation, looking at those two poor fools with sympathy.

As for gambling and all that, he felt no particular feeling, only that those fellas were really unlucky. Looking at the excited spectators on either side of the road, their embarrassment had been broadcast for all to see.

The two elders swinging the sticks didn’t stop. As they walked, they swung and continued to ask: "Can’t you earn your own money?"

"No!"

After another swing of the stick: "Do you feel bad for losing the hard-earned money we made?"

"Yes!"

Continuing to beat: "If you feel bad, why do you keep gambling? Do you really feel bad or not?"

"No!"

"You don’t even care about the hard-earned money we made..."

And beat some more!

Those two pitiful fellows didn’t know if they were supposed to feel bad or not. Either way, parading through the streets endured a beating, their hearts were likely bleeding...
