Carrying a Jurassic on me -
Chapter 110 - 51: A False Alarm_1
Chapter 110: Chapter 51: A False Alarm_1
The first reaction of the Cinerous Vulture falling on the tree was to look around. After carefully observing the adjacent branches and nearby trees, it relaxed when it realized everything was normal.
While it was on Cow Breeding Island, it stepped on a young Sarcosuchus, and that experience was enough. If it happened again, Yan Fei would be infuriated. Although the young Sarcosuchus seemed pretty useful now, it satisfied his craving for fish whenever he wanted.
From here, he could already see the Microraptors in the forest. The islands were not far apart, and now the dinosaurs on them looked quite similar. Life on these islands was simple. After watching for a bit, Yan Fei flapped his wings and took flight among the treetops in the forest.
This island was relatively flat, with a small lake slightly off-center, much smaller than the lake on Cow Breeding Island. Half of the area was forest and the other half was a large swamp.
There seemed to be fewer creatures on this island than on Cow Breeding Island. At least the Iguanodon herd he saw was smaller than the Iguanodon herd on Cow Breeding Island. This was probably because the forest only covered part of the island. The plants growing in the swamp were similar to reeds, suggesting that the island had less food than Cow Breeding Island.
There was a group of dinosaurs near the edge of the swamp that looked similar to Iguanodons, but were slightly smaller and had long crests on their heads. Having achieved the transformation into an Iguanodon, transforming into this kind of dinosaur didn’t feel special. Yan Fei quickly lost interest.
After exploring the island, Yan Fei felt relieved.
There didn’t seem to be any great dangers on this island. The small lake didn’t contain any terrifying Sarcosuchus, but there were a few Terrestrisuchus around.
"Wuuu Ahh..."
Just as he was about to transform into a Terrestrisuchus to take a closer look at the ground, suddenly a loud roar came.
Yan Fei was instantly alert. Could there be a powerful dinosaur that he hadn’t noticed until now?
He cautiously flew towards the area he had just explored, using the branches to conceal himself, being even more careful than his first exploration.
Everything in the forest seemed normal, and soon, he flew near the swamp.
The shrubs in the swamp were not as dense as the reeds, thus he was able to see clearly. Other than a few dinosaurs with crests on their heads, there was nothing else nearby.
Oh, there were a few Rapators. They were stealthily doing something, hiding among the sparse reeds in the swamp.
Because he had been waiting for a while and found no dinosaur making the loud noise, Yan Fei felt relatively relaxed and decided to watch what the Rapators were up to.
These Rapators were all near the edge of the swamp. They walked very carefully. After Yan Fei waited for quite some time, he saw a Rapator suddenly rush out.
A gray shadow quickly dodged this pursuing Rapator. But the Rapator’s companions moved at the same time, and one of them jumped and pinned down the gray figure.
"Qua...."
A sound came from under the Rapator’s foot, then almost simultaneously, the once quiet forest became filled with a chorus of ’qua qua qua’ sounds.
Wasn’t this the sound of a frog?
Yan Fei was somewhat curious. He wanted to fly over, but as soon as he spread his wings, he quickly folded them back.
Gray figures were continuously jumping out in the seemingly empty forest, rushing towards him. There were movements in places that Yan Fei originally thought were only rocks or earth mounds. They quickly gathered together, which was terrifying to look at.
The Rapators swarmed as soon as the call came out. When they heard the frog calls, they quickly ran away with their prey.
"Woo woo ahh..."
The sudden roar startled Yan Fei, making the tree branch beneath his feet tremble. Turning his head around, he found the source of the noise and began to swear in his mind.
His mind was like a stampede of ten thousand dinosaurs rampaging about.
The commotion of the frogs and the running of the Rapators had disturbed a group of dinosaur-like creatures that resembled Iguanodons. A roar from the alpha caused the entire group to panic and hastily disperse.
The frightening sound was just that. Yan Fei had heard it before and because it was so eerie, he had always assumed that the creature producing such a noise must be extremely powerful. This kept him away from the island for quite some time, and now discovering the truth just made him want to laugh and cry at the same time.
The creature had a crest on its head, about the same size as Iguanodon?
Putting thought into it, Yan Fei recognized the dinosaur as a Parasaurolophus. And due to the crest on their heads, their calls were so terrifyingly loud, even louder than a steam engine whistle.
Even though the Parasaurolophus had a terrifying howl, they were vegetarians just like Iguanodons. They were far less threatening than a Compsognathus. That is, as long as you were not foolish enough to lie under their feet.
It was only scary when you heard its roar for the first time. Once you realized, there was nothing to fear. It took Yan Fei a long time to calm his mind and divert his attention back to the giant croaking frogs.
After taking a quick look, Yan Fei estimated that these frogs were probably bigger than most washbasins, with the diameter of their round bodies reaching almost half a meter.
What was even more unusual was that they didn’t have the soft skin of common frogs. Instead, their skin was covered in a layer of wrinkles almost like armor. Only creatures like the Rapator with large hooks on their toes could deal with them.
However, considering that the Rapators fled at the sight of the frog army advancing, these guys were definitely not herbivores.
After observing for a while, Yan Fei determined why. These creatures actually had teeth. It was no wonder that the Rapators had to run. Frogs with teeth? This dinosaur world was truly full of wonders.
If both the size and number of these creatures were taken into account, it was clear that if the Rapators did not run away, there was only one probable outcome - they would be torn apart by these frogs.
The sight of so many frogs, each larger than a washbasin, all croaking loudly was spectacular to say the least. However, it was also incredibly noisy. Yan Fei soon had to fly to a farther tree to avoid going crazy from the noise.
Thanks to his superb memory, Yan Fei was able to recall the name of these creatures: Devil Frogs.
I wonder if they are edible?
They might sound terrifying but apart from the wrinkles on their skin, they did not look too bad. They were simply enlarged versions of common frogs. Plus, their eyes were not as bulging and they appeared to be smiling if you squinted a bit. They were actually quite cute.
After flying around the island for half of the day, Yan Fei started to feel hungry. His thoughts eventually turned to eating.
He had only eaten a frog once before in his life. It was a pest-control creature so the farmers rarely killed it. Only the naughty children would sneak around to catch and eat them. If they were caught, they would surely get scolded.
The only reason Yan Fei was allowed to partake was probably because he was so naive. The older kids knew he wouldn’t say anything.
As for the taste, Yan Fei could hardly remember. Nevertheless, any dish with meat in it was considered a delicacy back then, which would make him drool even in his dreams.
Never mind, he decided to catch one and try it out. The green frogs found in the farms might be beneficial insects, but these Devil Frogs seemed to be just gluttons. They looked chubby and all they had was a big mouth.
