Chapter 151: Chapter 163: I Take Responsibility For Her Life (4)

Does he still, like in the family portrait, live a happy and harmonious life?

Her willfulness ruined their home, and then she became pregnant by accident, leaving him alone in Bellshire and going to the United States!

Over the years, thinking of this filled his heart with resentment.

Elijah Smith’s eyes gradually became stormy, his hands clenched into fists. After a while, he lit a cigarette and took a deep drag. He smoked aggressively, inhaling hastily, and was violently choked by the smoke, bending over and coughing heavily.

After coughing for a long time, he steadied his breath. When he looked up, he saw himself in the mirror opposite, his face looking awful and his eyes tinged with red.

In that state, he was neither a person nor a ghost, completely devoid of the energy and youth a twenty-year-old boy should have. Even beneath the veneer of money, he could see a twisted, decadent heart.

He stared at his reflection for a long while before curving his lips and laughing softly.

Actually, what does it matter if he’s not ambitious, unsuccessful, or extravagant with money?

After all, no one cares, right?

Thinking this way, Elijah Smith felt as if a blade was scraping against his heart, each stroke harsher and more painful than the last, until his entire body was enveloped in pain.

He curled his body in agony, trying to ease the pain. In the end, he could only light one cigarette after another, inhaling deeply to revert back to the heartless and irresponsible Elijah Smith.

...

Today, a relative of Percy Stanton came to Bellshire, his brother-in-law, Joseph Tucker, husband to Percy’s older sister, Charlotte Thompson.

Joseph Tucker had come to Bellshire City for a temporary meeting, which lasted the entire morning. By the time it ended, it was almost noon. He decided to cancel some political banquet plans and called Percy to meet up instead.

Joseph Tucker and Percy’s conversation revolved around when Percy would return to Ravenwood City to take over Thompson Empire Group. Percy subtly said it would happen after a while. When Joseph asked how long, Percy laughed and raised his wine glass to change the subject.

After the meal, Joseph had other matters to attend to. Since he had been drinking, he called Bellshire Military Zone, and they dispatched a car to pick him up.

Left alone, Percy leaned back on the soft sofa at the dining table, squinting his eyes, slowly digesting the alcohol. About an hour later, he called over the waiter, paid the bill, picked up his car keys, and left the restaurant.

The sunlight outside the window was dazzling. Percy checked the time and, realizing that it was still early for Raymond to finish school, got into his car and drove to a nearby shopping mall.

As the mall’s underground parking lot was already full, Percy had to slowly circle around the mall before finally finding an available parking spot above ground.

After parking, he didn’t rush to get out of the car. Instead, he turned his head and looked out of the car window. The bustling street was filled with people coming and going. Many young men and women entered and left the mall, holding shopping bags in their hands.

He miraculously thought of the scene when he and Isabel Smith went shopping at "Ten Mile Prosperity" just a few days ago. A sudden pain shot through his temples, and he raised his hand to press it before belatedly realizing that he was missing her.

This feeling of longing was all too familiar.
