Chapter 148: Chapter 160: I Take Responsibility For Her Life (1)
With great care, Elijah Smith turned to Charlotte Green and said, "Watch your step, sis."
Elijah helped Charlotte all the way out of the villa and personally opened the car door for her. He carefully helped her sit in the passenger seat and even fastened her seatbelt before closing the car door. He then went around the car and got in as well.
With Charlotte in the car, Elijah drove much slower and steadier. Fortunately, it was nighttime, and the roads were not congested. They quickly arrived at the hospital, where Elijah carefully helped Charlotte into the emergency room. He then took her ID card and went to get a number for her.
The hospital at night was not very crowded, and it was soon Charlotte’s turn. Elijah anxiously waited at the door for a while before Charlotte came out with the prescription slip from the doctor.
Elijah hurriedly went up to her and asked, "Sis, what happened?"
"It’s nothing. The doctor said I have a slight cold and asked me to get some medicine. I should be fine after resting for one night," replied Charlotte, smiling gently at Elijah. Her voice was soft, like a ball of cotton.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Elijah took the prescription slip from her and went to the Western Medicine Window to get the medication. He carefully noted how to take the medicines, then escorted Charlotte out of the hospital with the medication in hand.
They had only spent half an hour in the hospital. When they came out, the night had darkened, and some display windows on the street had been closed.
Elijah drove the car on the same route back toward the Smith family’s home. The lights outside the window occasionally swept into the car, casting shadows on his youthful, handsome face, making him appear even more gentle.
Leaning against the passenger seat, Charlotte lazily sat and glanced at Elijah. She spoke, "Thank you, Elijah."
"It’s nothing," Elijah replied generously, looking at her.
After a while, Charlotte asked, "I didn’t disrupt any of your plans for tonight, did I?"
"No," Elijah replied again, looking at the red light ahead. Suddenly, Isabel Smith’s figure appeared in his mind.
"That’s good," Charlotte responded.
This time, Elijah didn’t say anything, but he felt a slight sense of agitation in his heart.
The car drove slowly on the road. After a while, Elijah heard Charlotte’s voice again, and he snapped out of his thoughts. He looked at Charlotte and smiled gently, "Hmm? What’s up, sis?"
"It’s nothing. We just passed a chestnut store, and I suddenly felt like eating chestnuts," Charlotte said softly. She then asked, "What about you? You seemed to be lost in thought just now. Is something bothering you?"
"No," Elijah shook his head and asked, "Do you want chestnuts? We can turn around and go back to buy some."
Charlotte looked at Elijah’s profile for a few seconds and said, "No, I just saw the store and suddenly felt like eating some. I don’t want to bother."
"It’s not a bother," Elijah replied somewhat perfunctorily. As they reached the next intersection, he made a U-turn.
Elijah drove all the way to the next intersection, made another U-turn, and parked the car steadily in front of the chestnut store. He grabbed his wallet, told Charlotte to "wait for me," closed the car door, and walked towards the chestnut store.
The seller was an old lady who was kind-hearted. She handed Elijah about half a catty of chestnuts and told him the price.
However, Elijah didn’t take the bag of chestnuts for quite some time. The old lady had to call out to him several times before he finally snapped out of his thoughts, took the bag, said "thank you," and turned to leave.
