Chapter 124: Chapter 0124: There’s More to It
Having heard Mia’s words, Chu Feng also asked, "Mia, what exactly is going on here?"
In response, Mia concisely recounted the events that had transpired.
Through Mia’s narrative, Chu Feng understood why Mia, who had a perfectly fine life in the USA, had to flee to Huaxia.
It was because Mia refused to become a gang boss’s concubine but was unable to resist the gang boss, so she had no choice but to run far away to Huaxia.
However, although that was Mia’s situation, Chu Feng felt that the kidnappers, based on Mia’s recounting of their conversations, were probably not after Mia. But the plan seemed definite and premeditated, indicating that this was not a mere robbery or hostage-taking incident.
"Oh! I remember now, they kept mentioning a term, ’City Party Secretary’. I don’t know what that means in Huaxia—does it signify a gang boss?" Mia, having recently arrived in Huaxia, didn’t understand the administrative system and was thus unclear about its meaning.
Hearing Mia’s words, Chu Feng was at a loss for words, wondering what Jianguo would think if he knew that in Mia’s mind, a ’City Party Secretary’ equated to a gang boss.
Nevertheless, Mia’s words caused a stir in Chu Feng’s expression.
As Chu Feng pondered the possible connection between this incident and Jianguo, Mia’s group of friends had just recovered from their shock.
"So Mia, is this the hero who saved you, your boss? Your boss, he’s pretty handsome, isn’t he?" A flamboyant foreign woman flirtatiously looked at Chu Feng as she spoke.
Seeing the look in her friend’s eyes, Mia immediately wrapped her arm around Chu Feng’s and threatened her friends with a serious tone, "I’m warning you, the boss is mine, and none of you are allowed to set your sights on him."
"Don’t worry, Mia, the boss is definitely yours. We just want to sleep with this impressive Huaxia man, that’s all—I promise to forget him after we’ve been in bed," the buxom foreign woman said while eyeing Chu Feng suggestively.
Chu Feng now regretted why he had bothered to learn English.
The audacity of this foreign woman was simply beyond his comprehension.
"That’s not okay either, the boss is mine alone, I can satisfy him by myself," Mia insisted, hugging Chu Feng tightly.
"Don’t be so stingy, Mia. Such an impressive boss deserves to be experienced, and it’s been a long time since I’ve had a man like that. It’s okay, let your boss be with you first—I can take the second turn," the bold foreign woman continued.
Mia pondered seriously for a moment, then said, "I have to ask my boss what he thinks."
"Mia! Call Mengying first, she’s really worried about you," Chu Feng immediately changed the subject, not truly believing Mia would ask such a thing.
"Mengying knows? Then I’ll call her right now," Mia said, and hurried off to make the call.
Once Mia left, the foreign woman became even more forward, almost clinging to Chu Feng.
At this point, Chu Feng could only pretend to be deaf and dumb, acting as if he totally didn’t understand her provocative words.
But not understanding wasn’t important—the foreign woman actually started to make a move, and Chu Feng had no option but to beat a hasty retreat.
"Alice, you scared away my boss, I’m going to fight you to the death," Mia returned and, seeing Chu Feng gone, got so angry she threatened to fight the foreign woman.
The fleeing Chu Feng returned to the exterior of the building, where Jianguo and two others quickly approached to inquire about the situation.
"Are you okay, uncle?" Jianguo asked with concern.
Chu Feng shook his head and said, "I’m fine. Have all the robbers been caught? And the accomplices among the crowd, have they been caught too?"
Jianguo nodded and replied, "The inside robbers have been checked, all knocked out by you, uncle. We found two Koreans and one Japanese among the crowd—they are highly suspect."
Chu Feng nodded, he had intended to remind Jianguo of something but then hesitated, feeling it might be inappropriate to speak directly, so he decided to wait and tell Jianguo when they went back.
Seeing Chu Feng hesitate to speak, Director Pei took the lead and said, "Director Pei, I’ll leave the matter here to you guys for now. I’ll take the uncle back first, and we’ll have a meeting at the city government in two hours."
Pei Wending nodded and replied, "Alright!"
Jianguo turned to Wang Teng and said, "Chief Wang, I hope you can represent the military at this meeting."
Wang Teng nodded and said, "No problem."
Jianguo still personally drove the car, ready to take Chu Feng back to school.
Jianguo said, "Uncle, if you have something to say, just say it."
Chu Feng pondered for a moment and replied, "Jianguo, those people were likely targeting you. I asked Mia, and it seems they deliberately chose this location. They appeared to know beforehand that Mia and the others were going to have a birthday party there. Moreover, Mia said she saw with her own eyes that the kidnappers released the Huaxia people, seemingly intending to capture these foreigners on purpose."
After hearing Chu Feng’s words, Jianguo slammed the steering wheel hard and said, "Finding those three people in the crowd, I knew it was these people’s doing again. Neither soft nor hard tactics worked on them, so they began to play such sinister tricks."
Chu Feng inquired, "What’s going on?"
Jianguo thought for a moment and then said, "Uncle, it’s a long story..."
As Chu Feng listened to Jianguo’s explanation, his expression grew much graver.
It turned out the issue originated from smuggling activities in East River over the past few months.
East River boasts high-quality coastlines, which not only brought a large marine economy to East River but also bred a large number of smugglers.
Korea and Japan were the most severe offenders, as they sought to ease the passage for their cargo ships.
They managed to influence many aspects of the East River government; however, they were unable to sway Jianguo.
They tried both soft and hard approaches, but Jianguo remained unmoved. In the end, they decided to take down Jianguo.
To take down an official of Jianguo’s stature, ordinary methods were absolutely ineffective; they could only resort to actions with international repercussions.
"These people are complete bastards, robbing our banks, killing three tellers and two police officers who arrived at the scene, and even plotting to murder those foreigners—it’s utterly despicable!" Jianguo was truly enraged.
Chu Feng suggested, "Jianguo, do you need me to investigate this matter for you?"
Jianguo replied, "Thanks, Uncle, but I can handle this little matter myself."
The two quickly returned to Elder He’s courtyard, as Jianguo had to rush back for a meeting.
Thus, they could only replace wine with tea; Jianguo toasted Chu Feng as a formal introduction, which also served as an apology.
"You little rascal, now you realize how formidable your uncle is and think to offer a toast," He Zhen said unhappily.
Despite being the City Party Secretary who everyone feared outside, Jianguo was just a dutiful son in front of his father.
Jianguo gave a smile and said, "Dad, I know I was wrong."
"You have things to take care of, so go ahead. I’ll just have a couple of drinks with Brother He," said Chu Feng.
"Alright then, Uncle, I’ll be leaving first. I’ll invite you for a drink another day," Jianguo stated.
Chu Feng nodded and replied, "Alright."
Once Jianguo had left, He Zhen, looking out the door, said apologetically to Chu Feng, "Brother Chu, Jianguo is thoughtless, don’t take offense to his manner. In the future, I hope you can help him more. Although I didn’t make him a teacher, I hope he can be a good official.
However, in Huaxia, being a good official comes with many restrictions and obstacles. Brother Chu, I know you are an extraordinary person, so I hope you can give Jianguo a hand at critical times, which would also benefit the people."
He Zhen spoke frankly. Chu Feng smiled and replied, "Brother He, don’t worry, I will provide assistance to Jianguo within my capabilities. If Jianguo can benefit the locals, it would also be like me earning some virtue by association. However, what I can do will all be within the bounds of principles."
Upon hearing Chu Feng’s response, He Zhen paused for a moment then burst into hearty laughter, "Brother Chu, whatever we do, of course, must not violate principles."
Lin Xue Mei shot He Zhen a look and scolded, "You’re always clinging to your principles; why don’t you let your principles serve you hot dishes instead."
