Chapter 36: Spar (2)

The gentle breeze blew over the battle-ready faces of the four competitors. Their fierce gazes were visible under the scorching afternoon sun.

Old Man James observed the four of them with a smile on his face, before lifting his hands and announcing, "Let the spar begin!"

And it happened.

Four of them darted from their positions with explosive speed, moving towards their opponent.

’Kendrick is really fast, almost as fast as Noah with his Swift Strides skill,’ Ragnar noted as his eyes fixated on his opponent, ’Fortunately, he is very slow compared to me.’

Thanks to his spirit points that had increased by 0.5 points from his meditation last night, his vision was much better. He could see much clearer and felt like he could even predict the movement of his opponent.

CLANG!

Their distance finally closed and Kendrick delivered a swift slash.

But Ragnar was quick enough to block it effortlessly.

Kendrick smirked, he stepped back quickly, separated his sword and struck with another swift attack.

’Too slow!’

Ragnar did not find his moves tricky at all as

he could almost predict them.

Seeing that Ragnar was stronger than he imagined, Kendrick began fighting even more seriously.

His movements became faster and his moves carried more strength behind them.

Both of them were quickly engulfed in close duel. The clangor of their swords clashing against one another quickly filled the backyard of the retired knight.

But they weren’t the only ones.

Noah and Roger were also engaged in intense combat.

Both of them fought on the same pace, their speed matched one another and their attacks were fierce towards one another.

Roger was baffled seeing how Noah fought back evenly.

’His execution of the starving sword dance is even more lethal than mine! How is that even possible, he only learnt that in less than one week!’

Roger’s mind was in turmoil.

He could not believe that someone who had spent just a few days learning a technique that took months to master would actually stand on equal footing to him in a duel.

’I even have more combat experience with the technique but yet I cannot overpower this kid!’

The more Roger exchanged moves with Noah, the more he realized why Old Man James titled them as geniuses.

’I cannot lose!’

Roger’s eyes turned fierce and he increased the speed and strength behind his attacks, succeeding at pushing Noah back.

Noah, on the other hand, revealed a sly grin — exactly what he was waiting for, for Roger to take the fight more seriously.

Noah’s eyes furrowed as he too began unleashing hell on his opponent. He blocked all his swift moves and soon overpowered him with his own well planned attacks.

In a matter of one minute, Roger could no longer attack but only defend.

Not far away from them, the fierce combat between Ragnar and Kendrick grew even fiercer.

Sparks could be seen each time their swords collided with each other.

Kendrick’s movement of the sword was swift, as expected of someone who was the best amongst his time.

While he was outstanding, he was quickly overpowered by Ragnar!

Ragnar’s agility had reached a point where he became more than three times faster than trained athletes. His spirit had given him boosted perspective and his physique made his strength and stamina more formidable!

"Sorry, big brother Kendrick," Ragnar muttered as he closed in for a round of even fiercer attacks.

Kendrick entered a disadvantageous defensive position.

He could only take plenty steps backward and block.

His mind raced, his eyes studied his opponent — searching for a flaw he could use to his advantage, but there was none.

"I forfeit!"

Having no other choice, he accepted defeat immediately.

"Interesting."

Old Man James, who had been observing the intense spar since the beginning, finally spoke.

He gave Kendrick an understanding nod and turned to Ragnar with a proud smile, "Ragnar, you have beaten my own expectations. I expected you stand you ground against Kendrick, but not only did you stand your ground, you even overpowered him. I am very proud!"

"Thank you, master," Ragnar bowed.

Before he could continue, the voice of Roger announcing his defeat was heard.

"Splendid!" Old Man James reacted happily.

"Outstanding performance both of you," he complimented.

Ragnar and Noah had proud smiles on their faces.

"You have completed all the basics of becoming a swordsman. These are all this old man is capable of teaching. In the future, as you grow stronger, you would meet better and stronger swordsmen with more knowledge to impart," he spoke in a gentle tone.

"Till then, experience is your only teacher. I heard you two plan to enter the forest to hunt wild beast with your newly acquired techniques. It is not a bad idea. In fact, it is the best idea. Milan would be accompanying you two when you are prepared," he concluded, placing his hand on their shoulders.

Kendrick and Roger could only watch from the sideline.

Although they felt embarrassed being defeated by two teenagers, they also felt proof of them at the same time. They even wished them more success.

After Old Man James was done addressing the two of them, he suggested they go on a drinking spree to celebrate the event.

"I still have some alcohol left, hope you two are ready for a hangover."

"Of course," Noah responded.

’Has he forgotten how weak he is towards alcohol?’ Ragnar could only shake his head, pitying his friend.

"Haha! Real men never run from alcohol," Old Man James chuckled.

Minutes later, the five of them could be seen sitting together, sipping alcohol from wooden mugs.

Old Man James opened up a discussion and the small gathering were quickly engaged.

Nevertheless, only about five minutes had passed when Noah started getting dizzy.

Ten minutes later, he began blabbering nonstop.

"Me... Will become the greatest swordsman, hahaha! All you will become my loyal maids, hahahaha!" he spoke and laughed with himself.

Ragnar and the others watched with amusement — Ragnar had only taken a moderate amount of alcohol, thus he wasn’t dizzy like his pal.

After another ten minutes, Noah fell asleep on the ground, soaked with alcohol and dirty. Ragnar could only pity for Merlina who would have to take care of him later.

Ragnar spent some time talking with the adults before bidding them farewell and dragging Noah home.

Noah did not stop babbling all the way home. Everyone who saw the pair strolling home couldn’t help but ask what was wrong with him.

After that stressful walk, they finally arrived at Noah’s place.

At that very moment, an infuriated Merlina stood before them, glaring daggers at her drunken brother.

"What the hell happened?" she demanded, her gaze fierce.

"He had a bit too much to drink," Ragnar replied gently.

But Noah had his own response: "My lovely sister Merlina... belch what have you made for dinner? Hope it’s not your onion cake... belch it tastes really bad."

Merlina’s face froze with anger at his words.

’He’s really fucked up this time,’ Ragnar thought, pitying his friend.

He even tried to speak up for him. "Don’t mind him, it’s just the alcohol talking. He’ll be back to normal after a good sleep, I promise. You know your onion cake is the best."

Naturally, that should have calmed Merlina, but drunken Noah was not having it.

"You think I’m drunk? I’m not drunk... belch How can the greatest swordsman, Noah, be defeated by mere alcohol? What I said is true, your onion cake is..."

"Shut the hell up!" Ragnar quickly clamped his hand over Noah’s mouth, muffling his words.

Unfortunately, Merlina was already beyond furious.

It took Ragnar several minutes of pleading on Noah’s behalf before she finally agreed to let it go.
