Chapter 60: An Old Friend

*CREAK!

A creak was heard as the door slid open, and a figure entered the room.

"Oh my my, aren’t you adorable Thelly. Fast asleep here of all places— so venerable."

The shapely figure sat down next to her, cupping Thelma’s cheeks and brushing her hair to the side. The figure spoke out though the words said were barely about a whisper.

"So innocent."

"When these eyes open up, the angel just disappears. Haa, you’ve achieved more than I would have—I’m glad." The figure got comfortable beside her, relaxing on the flooring as much as possible. "You taught me one thing, I’d always remember it— always."

************

"Catch them!!" Voices were heard yelling out as a group of knights gave chase to a bunch of kids. They were misfits of society and this was just one of the days they went about their petty missions— yet what they’d done, surely deserved the company they had gotten.

"Alice, take the diamond and get to the meeting point, Cony and I will take on the rest." Handing over the object with a cloth around it to the small framed blonde with orange eyes.

"Eek! So heavy, I can’t – I can’t!" Alice protested, the object about slipping through her hands.

"Ugh, must you be that weak?! Cony get the diamond there, I’ll handle these knights with Alice."

"Meee!!"

"Who else? Now Cony do you remember the passwords." Thelma asked, Alice, handing over the object to him also.

"Where are they?!" Their pursuers could be heard drawing closer.

Parting ways, the two girls went ahead, leaving the other to get the job done. They climbed up one of the buildings around as most had flat rooftops, covering their heads with sashes and for some reason, stood at its edge.

"Have you seen a teenage girl with a pair of sapphires?" The knights could be seen asking around the stalls and passersby.

"Yoohoo!" All those down there turned to look up following the voice. "It’s her!"

"Of course it’s me. Do you have to look twice to see that?" She pouted, behaving majestically and making sure to stand so close to falling over, as it raised their hopes of catching her easily, increasing the tension in the air.

"Under the authority of NobleHouse Baxton, you are to be arrested for theft." One of the knights who seemed to be of a higher rank than the rest, his armour bearing a cape.

"Are you done?" Thelma asked, not giving an ounce of care for being on the first of the Baxton’s wanted list.

’So brave!’ Alice couldn’t help but admire her. "This where we start running," Thelma informed, already taking the lead heading who knew where. Footsteps were heard coming up to the roof while there was a commotion on both sides of the buildings.

"Get them!"

Moving fast, the knights were still catching up as Thelma was quite aware she was dealing with spiritualists. Yet she also knew how heavy those armours they wore were, being the only advantage she currently had. Having no knowledge of the spiritual levels or whatsoever, all Thelma knew was to never get caught— the only rule after all.

"Do you trust me, Alice!" Thelma said out loud as they approached the end of the row of buildings. "Hahaha— even more than myself." Alice chirped, grabbing the hands of the other, they jumped into the air towards the other building divided by a busy street.

"We aren’t going to make itttt!!" Alice yelped as they were about descending although being only halfway through. "We were never supposed!" Thelma replied, her voice calm as usual.

"Huh!"

*AAAHH!

*THUD!

"I’m alive?" Alice chimed checking her body to confirm any injuries, as she felt none.

"As you can see, now keep your head down." Thelma cautioned.

"Where are they?! Didn’t we see them fall!" Voices could be heard above from the rooftop, their voices barely audible, as the busy streets and bustle everywhere deafen it.

"Search every part of the street!"

Thelma could hear them eagerly searching, their clanging armour and pushing of people as they checked faces also. Making her wonder if they could grow 2 feet tall from a jump. Watching from a crack in the side of the wagon of hay they found themselves hidden within.

’Guess no one will search for a body if a crowd hadn’t already gathered by one.’ She thought, realizing how stupid she was having thought they’d think she was dead. It was normal anyway, at the age of 28 the minor unmatured part of her brain still did pump in silly thoughts into her feed.

"Have you found them?!"

"Check the alleyways! They couldn’t have gone far."

"Haa." Exhaling, Thelma laid back down on down on the wagon. Alice, lying beside her fidgeted with her hair, humming softly as she had nothing else to do either way. Meanwhile having her entire focus on her open ears, someone close and on the wagon spoke to their hearing.

"I know you kids are in there—" A masculine voice was heard. ’The driver is aware, we’ve been exposed?’ Alice froze, panic setting in when as if aware, a hand grabbed hers.

"Don’t worry, I’ll get you to safety."

"Huh?" Alice had moved from frozen to stunned, about to speak to Thelma when a finger was placed on her mouth.

"NobleHouse Baxton places this part of the Dane Street on a lockdown!" Knights could be heard flooding from all over, being more than those who wre initially after them. Their announcement only brought about chattering and protests from the people.

"All should continue to their destinations, it’s a simple search not anything against you folks!" He added, the crowd calming down a bit since there wasn’t much they could do against them— unless one wished to be tagged as a rebel of course.

"Wagons and Carriages to the right and the rest on my left hand!"

’This is bad—really baddie bad!’ Alice’s panic set in once again. As with their wagon being the third on the line, it was soon approached to be searched.

"Ah, if it isn’t Jack our own hayman." The voice of the knights could be heard as they were now near the wagon of hay. "You wouldn’t be hiding someone in your wagon right?" One of the knights said, his tone carrying lots of pride as that was common to a lowborn.

"Of course not, I’m not stup—"

"Liar!!"

Thelma shot up from the wagon, snapping fiercely at the figure driving it. "Thelma, what’s wrong with you?" Alice also stood up, and looking around she could see the shocked faces of each and everyone there.

"Hey! That’s the diamond thief— catch her already!" A voice called out to the knights.

"Wait, Diamond?" Suddenly all heads turned towards the two.

’Oh ow.’
