Chapter 77: Water Treatment

"Fine, that works then, I’ll be teaching you, Elisa," Aric said.

"Since we are talking about teaching, Aric and I have decided that everyone at this table will undergo some basic education," Ariel said.

"Why only us? There are tons of goblins that would want this opportunity," Ron said.

"That’s true, but we can’t do that now. Access to education is not something anyone can get, even in the human and elf settlements.

It’s not a free commodity; it’s quite expensive, and many families opt out of it. If we made education free here, it would lose its importance too early.

The goblins have to see it as a reward, something they can only get if they work hard to help us build.

It is like the true name; Aric could easily give them all a true name, but if he did, what else would they have to work towards?

Goals and rewards are what drive workers. Now that their number is higher, it would be hard to manage them the same way Aric did for you and the other goblins, so a good way to keep them in check is rewards," Ariel said. Her words made sense to all of them.

"So what are we going to be learning, and how is it going to be?" Unara asked.

"Elisa and I will teach you on certain days of the week, basic math and reading. All of you here are going to be the face of Aric in the future, and so we have to make sure that you have basic knowledge at least.

I would have preferred for the classes to start today, but a space for that has not been prepared," Ariel said.

"That’s nothing to be worried about; I’ll give Ron a small school building plan after the meeting. I’m sure it can be finished today, right?" Aric asked while looking at Ron.

"Definitely, master. Only a few goblins will do, and we will have the class set," Ron said.

"That’s good, because I’ll be needing the rest of your goblins for an important project," Aric said. When he called it a project, Ariel gave him a look. She had not heard of any project.

"Aric saw her stare but tried to ignore it and keep speaking.

"The water from the stream, though clean to the eye, is very unclean; it carries something called bacteria," Aric said, and immediately there was confusion at the table. Everyone looked at him with wide eyes, wondering what he was saying.

Aric gave an awkward smile when he saw this. He started thinking of a way to explain the concept to them.

"The stream is a flowing body of water. Inside the water, there are tiny, invisible creatures called bacteria.

They’re so small that you can’t see them with your eyes. They are everywhere, even though we can’t see them. In the stream, there are many types of these small organisms. Some are useful, whereas some are dangerous and make people sick.

The water from the stream is filled with those bad ones, and the more we use that water, the more we stand the risk of falling ill," Aric explained. He looked at the faces of all of them, and they were all fully concentrated on what he was saying, so he continued.

"Now, I don’t want us to use that water with the bacteria inside of it, so I would like to have whatever water is taken from there to be treated," he said, and immediately hands went up. The goblins, Hexorin and Duvalis, and he already knew what their question was.

"Yes, water can be treated, but not in the way you are thinking. Let me explain. Water treatment is basically cleaning your water, removing the large and small particles in it.

And that leads me to the project I want to carry out. I want to create a water treatment plant, but it’s going to be the first of its kind. It will use Mana to kill the bacteria inside the water, while a filtration system will remove the larger dirt.

I had the idea a while back and decided to act on it. I’ve noticed that people with higher amounts of Mana or spirit can’t stay dirty, even without bathing.

I watched Ariel, and the spirits, even myself, and I noticed it," Aric said.

"That’s because Mana removes dirt, Aric. It’s something that has been known for as long as time. Mages use pure Mana to remove dirt from their bodies," Ariel said.

"Exactly, so I think it will be possible to incorporate that into the treatment of water as well. I haven’t fully figured out what I’m going to do to make it work, but I’ll start working on it after this meeting.

While Ron and the goblins will start building an underground water pipe system, Penthris will provide the pipes and bolts, and the goblins will lay it out.

I’ll also give you a plan for it. It’s going to be an entirely new thing for you, Ron, but I’m hoping that you’ll lead the goblins through it like you have done since you came," Aric said.

"I understand, master. We will give it our best," Ron said.

"Aric, next time you want to make a major development, please run it all through me. Just because you have the ability to do it doesn’t mean you should.

I’ve been trying to remove work from your hands, yet somehow you have been getting more and more on your hands," Ariel complained.

"Ariel, I understand where you are coming from, but you don’t have to worry about it. I promise you that I’ll not go overboard, and that the next time I’ll run it through you," Aric said.

"Fine, well, that ends the meeting, since we already have our hands full with what to do," Aric said.

"I have a question though," Septa said.

"I have one as well," Duvalis said.

"Alright then, we will take both your questions and then end the meeting," Ariel said.
