Chapter 72: Disgusting Humans

Frederick looked into Aric’s eyes. He tried to see if Aric was bluffing and just wanted to push him into speaking, but that was not the case. Far from it, he could tell Aric was genuinely speaking his mind.

Frederick finally gave in and spoke, "What is it that you want to know?"

"Let’s start with where you are from?" Aric asked.

"I’m from a town close to the forest, Ravenhold," Frederick responded, making sure he kept to the question asked and didn’t give out any information that was not asked for.

"I see, then the next question. You lead a force of over fifty men. Only someone of relatively high status should be able to do that, so what’s your status?" Aric asked.

"I’m the Baron of Ravenhold, and have been for over ten years now," Frederick said.

"I see, that makes sense," Aric said and then kept quiet, but he wasn’t doing nothing—he was using appraisal to tell the strength of the men.

He was impressed with the stats of the Baron. If it wasn’t for the fact that his magic was very powerful, Aric would have found it difficult to fight against Frederick with his current stats.

He looked at Andrew and tried to get a grasp of Andrew’s stats as well.

There wasn’t much difference in his stats. For the past few days, rather than focusing on development, he had been focusing on the battle.

The battle ended up being far more lackluster than he believed it would have been, though that was good because it meant his plan had been very effective, even with the interference of the humans.

After a long while of deafening silence, he opened his mouth again to talk. "Why were you in the forest with a force of that size?" he asked.

Frederick frowned at that question, but in the next moment, he realized that it might be an opportunity for him to stay alive and actually win this.

"A few days ago, a massive spike in spirit energy was noticed. Now, something like that is surely going to draw attention, as it signifies a treasure or possibly the birth of a higher spirit.

Either way, both were things that a kingdom would fight over, especially if the spirit was unique. We came to check and secure whatever it was that was born here," Frederick explained.

"This spike, were you the only ones that felt it?" Aric asked. Frederick smiled when he heard the question. This was what he wanted—he wanted Aric to feel scared at the possibility that the whole kingdom might be coming here.

"Oh no, I’m very sure even the king has heard of it, and it is very possible that he will be on his way," Frederick said.

"You are a pretty good liar," Aric suddenly said, his words confusing Frederick instantly.

"What do you mean?" Frederick asked.

"Well, what I mean is simple. No king will leave their throne in search of treasure. That’s what they have dogs like you for.

You are searching for this, not for yourself, but to hand it over to the king and get a reward. But now I can guess you didn’t find anything.

So what’s your plan of action? You couldn’t head back with nothing, you had to bring something at least, so you stayed, watched, and waited for anything unusual, and then you spotted my battle.

You came rushing, wanting to lay claim to whatever it was that was happening, and maybe, it would be enough to ensure that the king forgives you," Aric said.

Frederick’s eyes flashed in rage, and he stared daggers into Aric.

"It seems I hit the nail on the head," Aric said and stood up to his feet. "Imagine you telling the king, I found an elf, capable of so much development and infrastructure, and then they captured me.

I would become a slave, working for them just to survive, striving, and pushing, because you greedy bastards wanted to save the skin of your neck.

Disgusting. You humans always do disgusting things," Aric said, completely forgetting that he was human in his past life and that he also had a human he cared for—Elisa.

"Your greed and selfishness are irritating. You take life as a joke, toying with people to your satisfaction."

As he spoke more, the memories of what the humans did to him kept flashing on repeat—the beatings, the pushing around—everything they did, he remembered all of it.

"Disgusting, disgusting, disgusting."

As he spoke, vines broke through the wooden floor of the house, covered in spikes. They wrapped around Andrew and Frederick, the spikes piercing into their skin.

"Arghhhhh!" Both of them let out pained cries as their blood ran down their already blood-soaked clothes.

"It’s unfair for me to call all humans disgusting. Some aren’t, or maybe I haven’t seen that side of them yet, but as for you... You know what? I take what I said back. All humans are disgusting and evil," he said.

His eyes flashed gold. It was no longer the bad memories driving him, but there was a very deep-rooted hatred inside him for humans.

He couldn’t tell where it came from, but he could feel it in him, like a strange power deep within. Aric felt like he was losing control, so he immediately forced himself to walk away. He went into another room and banged his head on the wall repeatedly until he calmed down.

"What the hell was that?" he asked himself in shock.
