Chapter 60: Making Plans part 3
"Then what’s the second way?" Quadoris asked.
"Well, that’s where Hexorin comes into play. Hexorin, I believe, can induce darkness, right?" Aric asked, and Hexorin nodded.
"Then for the small distance around the area of the moat, I want you to induce as much darkness as possible, but you won’t do this until the enemies are near the moat, maybe fifty meters away.
They will be shrouded in darkness, and their instincts would be to either go forward or turn back, but we aren’t letting them turn back.
Before the battle begins, we will have all the goblins hidden up in trees and underground, waiting, and when the darkness is induced, the goblins will come out.
Not to fight, but to scare—hitting their swords against their shields, shooting arrows into the air. The havoc from behind will lead the goblins to believe it is an ambush from behind, hopefully.
That should drive them to run forward. No one wants to fight in the dark, and they’ll run into the moat as planned, and that will be it.
The aim of the plan will be to ensure that we try to keep them as alive as possible, so we are playing this safe," Aric said.
"I would like to add something. I feel there is an aspect where my help can be used," Octa spoke.
"What’s it, then?" Aric asked.
"Your aim is to make sure that they fall into the moat, right? Then how about I make a few meters of ice around the moat? When they are blinded by the darkness and pushed by the goblins, they will slip and fall for certain.
It will ensure no one actually manages to escape their fate of falling into the moat," Octa proposed.
"Hmmm, that makes sense. Thank you, Octa," Aric said.
"Master, I feel there is something you are overlooking. I’m certain that the goblin force won’t be coming in blindly to attack us. They will certainly have some leaders, probably powerful warriors under the terror," Ron pointed out.
"I know, but that should be left to me. I’ll be the one to handle the leaders, whoever they are," Aric said. He spoke in a tone that left no room for debate about it.
After that, they went into some discussions about other issues, covering all the holes that existed in the plan.
_______________
Baron Fredrick stepped outside his manor, clad in beautiful black and gold armor. A sword hung on his waist, the scabbard engraved with gold.
A guard from the house hastily brought a horse to the Baron. It was a beautiful black horse. Her fur shined beautifully under the sun. She shook her head as she neighed, her beautiful mane moving like the waves of the sea.
Another guard rushed to get the saddle. He brought it and set it up for the Baron, ensuring that it was secure and ready to go.
The Baron climbed the horse and grabbed hold of the reins tight. "Run!" He gave the command and loosened the reins. The horse started running toward the gate, its gallops making a hard sound on the paved path.
The Baron rode out of the compound and into the town, moving fast as the wind pushed his hair back. Everyone on the road cleared off as the Baron approached.
The Baron rode until he made it to the edge of the town, where the militia base was. The gates of the militia compound were opened, and the Baron rode in.
The base was built like a small military base, with communal buildings and training fields.
Waiting for the Baron in front of the main entrance was Robert. Before the Baron even got to him, he had already bowed his head to the Baron. The Baron came down from his horse, and one of the men took his horse and led it to the stable.
"Baron Fredrick, I see you have come prepared," Robert said.
"Of course, I came prepared. I have no knights to help me. It’s a wonder why the king hasn’t sent any to me. How can a Baron exist and have no knights?" Fredrick said.
"I’m sure the issue will be fixed, my lord, but in the meantime, we have gathered the best. Inside, they have been waiting—all fifty men, a third of the town’s militia," Robert said.
"That’s good. As expected, I can count on you. Ready them all and have them on horses. I’ll be leading the march into the forest," Fredrick said.
"You will not brief them or raise their morale?" Robert asked.
"This is not war, Robert, and their wages are supposed to raise their morale," Fredrick said.
"I understand," Robert said. "But, master, you came back from a meeting with the count, and the day is almost over. The monsters in the forest are most active at night.
I suggest heavily that we wait till the morning, for your sake and the sake of your men," Robert advised. The Baron stared at him with a cold glare. He didn’t move for a few seconds, just staring at Robert.
Robert swallowed heavily. Fear gripped his heart that he might have pissed off the Baron.
"Fine," the Baron said and removed his sword from his waist, handing it to Robert. "Keep this for me. Prepare a bed here. I’ll be staying the night," Fredrick said and walked toward the entrance. Then he paused and looked back at Robert.
"Find me someone that will spar with me. It has been a while since I swung the blade. It will make for good practice," the Baron said and walked in.
Robert followed inside. He immediately cleared up one of the best rooms and placed the Baron’s sword inside before heading out again.
He rushed to the training field where the men were. He disrupted their training and walked to the middle-aged man that was training them. He whispered the issue into the man’s ear. The man nodded and called out one of his men.
"Andrew, get ready. You will be dueling the Baron."
