Chapter 50: Incoming battle

Now that he had gotten everything into place, he headed back to check on Ron and see how far he and the goblins had gotten. He didn’t know what he expected, but it was surely not to see that they had already dug out the full foundation and had a huge stack of planks and bricks ready.

"I heavily underestimated the strength and speed of you guys," Aric said. He didn’t want to be the one who slowed down their work, so he opened up the system interface and started purchasing quick-dry cement. freew\ebno\vel..(c)om

He spent 5000 gold to get the amount that would be enough for all the buildings that they planned to do today.

The bags appeared out of thin air in blank white bags.

"Alright, Ron, you have everything in place. Let’s keep the work going," Aric said. Ron nodded and got back to work.

Now that it was handled, the next thing to be dealt with was the bathhouse. Aric knew that he was about to be in a lot of hardship because building a bathhouse would require some very intense technical know-how.

[Urgent mission update, prepare for battle.]

[Your empire in progress has caught the eyes of certain enemies. You have 48 hours until the attack. Prepare for battle.]

[You must defend your empire, subdue the enemy, and take their home as well.]

The mission update suddenly came up, showing him a mission. The details made Aric know it was not a joke—his home was about to be attacked by someone.

He had been so heavily focused on development that he had forgotten about the fact that he was in the Great Forest, the most dangerous place around.

But how could anyone be watching them? He had the spirits and Ariel. Surely, they would notice if someone was watching them, right?

As he had that thought, he heard a bird cry from above. He looked up and saw a massive bird-like creature flying away.

"Shit, they had an overhead scout," Aric said. "There’s nothing else to do now except to prepare for what’s to come. I thought I would have more time to build my home before enemies came, but I’m guessing even that is too much to ask for."

"You look worried." Ariel walked up from behind. She leaned her head on his shoulder as she spoke.

"Yeah, it seems someone is planning to attack us. Our presence here has been noticed, and it has caught the eye of someone," Aric said.

"Wait, what? Do you mean a battle? Who is it?" she asked.

"I don’t know yet, but we have two days at best. We need to prepare for it," Aric said. He connected telepathically to the goblins and spoke to them all at once.

"Goblins, this is your master. There has been a change of plans. All of you, join hands with Ron and finish the house.

You have six hours to get it done, and done well," Aric said.

The goblins were confused by this sudden change in instructions, but they did as they were told and all of them rallied to help build.

Aric knew that he was working on limited time now, but he still wanted the house completed, for one, because it had already started.

He also needed some time to get his head in the game, probe the enemy, and make a plan of defense. He couldn’t stay seated and wait for the battle to come to him—he had to prepare.

"So what’s the plan now?" Ariel asked.

"I need some time to think of what to do. I’ll tell you when I’m sure," he said.

The bird flew through the sky, over the trees of the Great Forest. Its dark feathers were like a shadow in the sky, possessing crimson red eyes, a long black beak, and a glowing red crystal on its forehead.

It flew until it came to a small mountain situated in the forest. The bird dived down at full speed toward the mouth of a cave.

It flew right into the darkness of the cave and kept flying until a blue light began shining within the cave. Crystals littered the walls in different sizes and brightness.

The bird dropped to its feet as it got to this point, walking into the cave deeper. Hobgoblins filled the cave, each one doing what they were doing.

There were smaller caves within the cave, and the hobgoblins used these as their homes. The cries of humans could also be heard from the depths of the cave, wailing and calling out for help.

The bird kept walking until it got to the deepest parts of the cave. Standing at the entrance of the largest inner cave were two mighty hobgoblins. They had evolved so far that they were eight feet tall, with horns growing from their heads.

When they saw the bird, they didn’t try to stop it. They allowed the bird to go in. The bird continued its journey into the cave, where the walls were no longer filled with blue crystals but rather red and purple.

Inside the cave sat several goblin shamans and mighty goblin warlords, and they all were paying respect to a massive orc.

The orc sat there, ten feet tall and extremely massive. His eyes gleamed with sinister energy.

There was a purple crystal similar to that of the bird. When the orc looked down at the bird, he let out a low growl and then spoke.

"What have you found for us now?" he said in the normal language.

"Master, there is indeed something very important. The disturbance that you asked me to go and check is indeed worth your attention.

An elf is building a community in the forest using techniques I have never seen before. But that is not all, my Lord. He also has many hobgoblins with him, along with higher spirits and a human that will also be fertile for your goblin followers," the bird said.

"Hmm, I see. This will not stand in the forest I rule," the orc said.
