Chapter 45: Planning for long term
It was finally time to get the cooking started. Aric called Ron, Gunam, and Lucas to help out. He needed to bleed out the meat, or so the recipe he bought in haste for a costly 2000 gold said.
"Alright, Ron, Gunam, take two large beams and plant them into the ground," Aric gave the order, and they rushed to it. He, on the other hand, started buying some ropes.
The fire was already going long before, so he also needed to get that going. He called out to Elisa.
"Elisa, please, I’ll need you for what’s next," he said, and she rushed over to him while the hobgoblins fixed the beams into the ground.
He paid the system for the hard copy of the recipe for potato soup. He handed it to her.
"Study the recipe. You can have anyone help you. I’ll send the small goblins over to you to bring all you’ll need," Aric said. She nodded and, in reply, glanced down at Aric’s crotch area before walking away. Aric felt a chill run up his spine, but he couldn’t be distracted for now.
The two beams were set up, and one was balanced across both. Aric handed the rope to Lucas. "Tie up both hogs upside down and flay them with a knife. We want to make the blood drip out as much as possible.
Please make it look neat. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just don’t make the meat look like monsters," Aric said.
"Understood, boss," Lucas said. Since he was done with that, Aric turned his attention to buying what he would need. He had budgeted to spend 5000 gold for this, so that was what he was going to do.
He spent five thousand getting all the ingredients that they would need. Crates and crates of potatoes appeared along with other ingredients.
"Alright, goblins, take this to Elisa and help her with whatever she needs," he said, and they immediately rushed to it, carrying everything in groups to make sure that it was secure.
Aric watched the goblins go. He noticed that their clothes were still the rags that they had on. Also, the hobgoblins were barely covered.
"One thing at a time, Aric. We will deal with one thing at a time," Aric said to himself. He didn’t want to let his mind wander to another thing right now.
Now that everything was moved to Elisa, he could focus on the hogs, but they were getting bled by the hobgoblins, so he decided to leave them be and take a look inside the building for the goblins to stay.
He walked to it and ran his finger on the exterior. He had to admit that this was very well done. If they could keep this quality of work up, he would have no need to work much, just keep coming up with work plans and designs.
"Thinking too far ahead, Aric. One step at a time," he said to himself and pushed the door open. He walked into the house, and it was looking great. The goblins covered all bases.
"They did a great job, I have to say," Aric said. He walked to the end of the room. There was nothing wrong with it.
"Alright, next step is the bunk beds. That shouldn’t take a lot of time," Aric said and walked to the door that led to the inner rooms.
The rooms were made for the kitchen, a dining area, and two other rooms—one bigger one for the spirits and a smaller one for the hobgoblins.
They made everything simple, separated by doors, with no hallways to ensure that they used the space as best as possible.
Aric knew that he would be building more and better buildings in the coming days, but while they built them, he still needed to ensure that they had a good place to sleep.
Something that he knew was that creating a favorable environment for workers with benefits and a promise that better things would come if they worked harder was the best way to motivate workers.
Harsh methods could work well in the short term, but what Aric wanted to build was not a short-term thing. It was something that had to last forever or as long as the world existed.
So he had to make the best effort to keep everyone motivated. Since he had finished checking the building, he decided to go and finish the cooking.
As soon as he stepped out, the beautiful aroma of the potato soup had already filled the air. Aric paused to take a whiff of it.
"I didn’t expect her to be that quick and for it to smell that good," Aric said. If she had come this far, that meant the potato soup was already coming together.
The soup was only the starter to keep the stomach warm. The hog meat was the main course, and he didn’t want them to have to wait for long after eating the soup.
He rushed over to the hobgoblins and saw them standing around the wild hogs, which now had very long cuts, yet at very good parts of their bodies that didn’t destroy the body.
"We listened to what you said, master, and tried to keep the cuts simple. We figured their skin would be useful along the line," Ron said.
"Yeah, yeah, that’s great thinking. Seems you guys have come a long way in just a day. Your brains are firing," Aric said. He looked at the pool of blood under the hogs and then at Ron.
"Now, skinning. It’s not a hard process that requires you to use a lot of know-how, but it’s still hard to make sure that it is done well.
You have to be able to tell the difference between skin and flesh. Alright then, I’ll leave you guys to it. Help me skin them and keep the skin safe. I want to check in on Elisa," Aric said.
He didn’t want to check in on her; he just didn’t feel like getting blood on his hands, so he left it to the goblins.
