Chapter 103: Shed your body
The warm glow of the morning sun seeped through the window, cascading beautifully over the polished wooden floors of Aric’s room.
The light shined to the bed to wake up the person that was supposed to be sleeping on it, but he wasn’t there. Rather, he was already outside, standing with Ariel and Elisa.
"Where is Pentharis?" Aric asked, tapping his feet on the ground in an impatient manner.
"There’s no need to rush, right?" Elisa asked.
"There is, actually. If Aric stays out for too long, someone will come and meet him to ask for this or that, and he’ll get pulled into work, especially now that a lot is going on," Ariel explained. She looked around to see if she could find Pentharis.
After a while, Pentharis came running in their direction. He caught up to them and greeted, "Good morning," he said in an unusually happy tone.
"What’s got you giddy and why are you late?" Aric asked.
"Oh, yeah, it’s because Ron asked for my help with something he wanted to do in the houses," Pentharis said.
"Huh? None of the plans I gave him for the houses have use of metal yet. What could he possibly be doing?" Aric asked. He turned, looking in the direction of the houses.
"No, no, no, we are moving now. Pentharis can tell you all about what Ron is doing on our way to the town, but we can’t waste any more time here," Ariel said.
"Fine, let’s go," Aric said and started walking. He let the ladies get in front and then grabbed Pentharis by the neck and pulled him back.
"What did you say he was using the metal for?" Aric asked.
"It’s some kind of wired framework to be put under the floors of all the houses. I don’t know if you have entered any of the houses, but Ron didn’t use planks yet.
He used the cement stuff you gave him and created some patterns that the iron frames I made would fit in.
He said he was trying something a few days ago. He accidentally put a fully metal bar inside a flame and the heat slowly reached his hand and burnt him.
And that gave him the idea for what he is doing. He said winter will soon come and that he had lived through one winter before and it was extremely cold.
If they could channel heat through the frame all through the house, they would be able to ensure that everyone is warm during the winter.
At first, I thought it was a very ridiculous thing, but then me and Treshan tested it—heat through metal—and it worked.
I don’t know exactly how he wants to do it, but I loved the idea for some reason, so we spent the night making the frames that he would need for it," Pentharis explained in detail.
"So you mean to tell me that Ron discovered heating systems for homes? All on his own?" Aric asked.
"Seems like it. That goblin is a genius," Pentharis said.
Aric was shocked by this discovery. Never in a million years would he think that Ron would make a heating system on his own.
He felt a sense of pride wash over him, knowing that in a way he was the one that trained Ron to become what he was today.
A smile formed on his face as he thought about it even more. Pentharis looked at Aric smiling; he didn’t know why he was smiling exactly, so he shrugged and kept walking.
"So why did you bring me along? Unara would have been more level-headed than me for something like this," Pentharis said.
"Ariel was the one that decided that you come. I don’t know why she chose you," Aric said. He kept walking through the forest. He didn’t say anything for a few seconds, but then he spoke.
"I’m glad it’s you though. Amongst all the spirits, you are the one I relate with more after all," Aric said casually.
Pentharis heard that and a smile formed on his face, but immediately Aric turned to look at him, and he shifted into an emotionless look.
"Pentharis, how strong are you guys really? I know you and the spirits are all strong, but how much exactly?" Aric asked.
Pentharis heard the question and fell into thought for a few seconds before responding. "It may seem like our strength is quantifiable, but it’s not. There’s something called base strength or resting state strength.
When we are in base strength, you can’t know our actual strength unless we are using our abilities. For instance, you are a conduit for spirit energy, Master.
Somehow, you pull spirit energy from somewhere that even I don’t know and channel it out subconsciously. And since you are the one that gave us our name, we are connected to your infinite stream of spirit energy.
And with an infinite stream of energy coming into us, we can use our abilities almost to no end, unless it’s too much for our bodies to handle—but that is very unlikely to happen," Pentharis explained.
"Seriously? This is the first time I’m hearing about me being a conduit or whatever. But that’s not what’s shocking. What is shocking is the fact that you are saying you have something that looks like limitless potential.
Your only restriction is your own physical bodies. So what if you lose the physical bodies?" Aric asked.
"I think if we would shed these physical bodies, we would be able to reach an unstoppable level. But nothing comes without its risk, because in that state we are simply conscious spirit energy, and we might never be able to make it back into a body.
And if we can’t, we are probably going to slowly diffuse into the surrounding spirit energy and we will cease to exist," he said.
"I see. Then let’s make sure that none of you ever shed your physical bodies," Aric said.
