Chapter 102: Working without trust

The saintess walked into the hall, her footsteps echoing on the polished marble floor. It was a massive circular hall, five marble thrones as tall as ten feet inside in a semi-circular manner.

On the chairs were figures cloaked in white, their faces shrouded in darkness. They simply existed as figures, but their identity was unknown.

She walked in with confidence, making her way to the center of the Hall. She bowed her head to them and spoke, "I greet the masters." She spoke, her voice echoing within the halls.

"It was made known that you want a meeting with us, and to what reason is that?" the master seated right in front spoke. Her voice was feminine, but it was filled with age and wisdom.

"Masters, I had a vision, one that is of great importance," the saintess said.

"You had a vision? It has been a long time since you had one. Is it about the spirit cult? We have long reached a stalemate in our fight against them," the master asked.

"No, masters, what I saw was not about the spirit cult. It was an anomaly that should not be, a being that shouldn’t exist in this world," she said.

"A being that shouldn’t exist? What exactly are you talking about?" the master asked.

"A being with more than one soul exists, each soul having their own use and essence," she said.

"A being with more than one soul?" the master asked.

"That’s impossible," the third master said, his deep voice echoing within the Hall.

"Not exactly impossible. After all, we have seen such cases of two souls, even three," the master to the left side spoke. His voice was manly but also very smooth to the ears.

"People with more than one soul are born under very special occasions, and their birth is known by all. But this being has never been recorded. By what she said, this is the first time," the fourth master said, her voice sounding smooth to the ears.

"But that shouldn’t be worth calling a being that should not exist, saintess," the first master said.

"He is an abnormality because he possesses four souls within his body," the saintess said, her voice crisp, cutting through the empty Hall and drifting into the ears of the master.

Time sat still as she said that. No sound could be heard within the Hall. The silence stood for a few seconds before the first master spoke.

"Saintess, it is not possible for a being to have four souls. Such a being would be a chimera, and that is forbidden all around the continent," the master said.

"He is not a chimera. He is a half-elf. I didn’t see anything different about him. All I saw was his four souls.

I don’t know how a being like that exists, but it shouldn’t. I want your permission to search for this being, either to take him down or capture him.

We all know what a being with more than one soul can become. One with four is too dangerous to be left on his own," she said, her eyes closing into slits.

"Your words are true. A being with four souls is too great a risk, and if the spirit cult gets their hands on him, we might have an Armageddon on our hands.

But you are the saintess. You should not leave and travel so easily," the master said.

"But I am the one who saw it. I am the best to handle it. It is for the best that I go. I will disguise myself as I travel so that no one knows who I am," she said, trying to persuade them.

"Hmmm, what you have said are reasonable points, so we will allow you to find this being and do what you need to do. But I will not allow you to go alone. You will go with Elan and three of the newest prodigies.

Elan is a trusted member. He was also your own classmate and the best after you. As for the three prodigies, we need them to be trained. They need the out-on-the-field experience if they are ever going to be elites," the master explained.

"Elan... he and I haven’t been on good terms ever since I became saintess. I’m not sure that going with him would be a wise idea. But then again, this is a mission from the masters themselves, and he is a trained elite. There is no way he’ll allow personal emotions to get the better of him. Even then, I should be careful around him."

She looked up at the masters and then bowed her head.

"Thank you, Masters. I wish to head out at the break of dawn tomorrow. I would like for them to be ready today," she said.

"They will all be briefed and asked to prepare," the master responded.

She turned and walked to the door, and it opened for her. She walked out of it and headed into the hallway.

Her mind still lingered on the fact that she would be working with Elan. She didn’t want to, but she had no choice.

She shook her head to get the thought out of her head. She needed to focus. After all, she saw the half-elf in a forest, but she couldn’t be sure of what forest that was.

She would have to go through all the places that would have some sort of information about a half-elf, and one of those places was the elf empire. It might be a large ground to cover, but there are very few half-elves, so it wouldn’t be hard to narrow it down if she went there to make her research.

She wanted to move as fast as possible. She had a feeling that this half-elf would grow in strength rapidly, and if she was too late, he would have become a threat that she would not be able to control at all. And as the saintess, she could not allow that.
