Chapter 182: Raine Montgomery [2]

Confusion was clearly evident on Luis and Sandro’s faces after being left alone. What happened? They both wondered. Their hands were suddenly freed yet their feet were stuck on their spot, lost and bewildered.

Sandro’s gaze lingered on the door, as he asked incredulously, "What...just happened?"

Luis, who was the first one to compose himself, stood and stretched his arms as he answered, "We won’t know if we just dawdle here. Let’s follow her. I’ve got lots of questions I wanted to ask her."

The secretary walked to the door, but Sandro grabbed his arm in haste and remarked, "Don’t be reckless. She said her men were above, what if we get caught again? Don’t you have even the slightest worry about yourself? You’re as nonchalant as you are even when we were dealing with that bearded man."

Luis looked at the alpha, baffled, "Are you seriously thinking they’ll tie us again after their boss released us? If ever, I think this situation is weird. So, let’s follow her quickly before she leaves!"

He stopped for a minute and admitted, "Also, let’s say I am calm because I know we’re not all alone here. Boss’ cousins are backing up us."

"What?" Sandro asked in surprise and bewilderment, a mixture of understanding and accusation flared in his eyes.

Luis glanced over his shoulder as he walked to the door, sporting an apologetic look, he replied, "I’ll explain it to you later. Let’s get out of here first."

Sandro had no choice but to follow behind the dashing secretary, prioritizing their safety. But they hadn’t reached the exit yet when a shadow loomed over them, along with footsteps echoing down the stairs.

Sandro’s chest pounded with a mixture of fear and wonder. Being the alpha and the larger guy, he grabbed the male beta secretary, Luis, and hid him in his back. But soon, the trepidation he felt vanished when a familiar voice resonated within the cramped concrete walls of the underground stairs.

"What’s taking the two of you so long? Are you guys injured?" Kayden Montgomery’s figure appeared; his blonde hair was like a ball of light in that dimly lit place. On his hand, he carried a box with a cross on the lid, while assessing their situation.

After a few seconds, he spoke again, his focus not on the fact that her mother was involved, but on the bodies of his comrades, "You seemed fine to me. Let’s get out of here and talk outside."

Kayden’s voice was low and tense, and it seemed that questions were running in his head as well, waiting to be answered.

Luis cleared his parched throat and asked, "Sir, did you perhaps see the person who came in and out of this place?"

Sandro gave Luis a sideways glance. There was no hesitation in his voice at all, and it sounded like his tone wasn’t asking, but rather implying something.

Kayden’s face tightened. How could he not?

They were monitoring the whole place despite the distance. They used binoculars to see from afar, and it felt like the world pinned him down by the shoulders when he recognized his mother stepping out of the car and entering the building.

The sickly mother they have who always sided with her twin brother, no matter what he did. So, it wasn’t surprising that his mother would help his uncle; what shocked him was the idea that...his dear mother was directly involved.

Through his earpiece, he could hear his sister asking what was the sudden pause. Kayden, who was just a doctor tending to his patients, was forced by his sister and cousin to participate in that play of hide-and-seek, only to find out that it was his mother who was it.

The words were trapped in his throat, and he failed to answer his sister asking for the situation from the earpiece he wore.

Kayden nodded and answered after a while, "I did."

Luis wasn’t asking for confirmation, what he wanted to see was how his boss’ cousin would handle it.

On the other hand, Sandro was still processing the situation. He muttered unconsciously, "How could your mother do that?"

Kayden flinched. His expression hardened. He knew what the private investigator was pointing out. The conversation they held was heard by all of them, even Kayla who was hands-on in that operation.

Even they, couldn’t believe the implications of that small talk. What did the bearded man say?

I just wanted to make money...got an offer to sleep with someone...Kayden balled his hands, his nails clawed in his palms, but the pain didn’t register in his system. He was numbed from the puzzles that slowly piecing themselves together.

Do you remember the omega you raped? It was Ashler Ford...Those words shattered his faith in his mother. As soon as the bearded man exited the building, Kayden’s group surrounded them, together with the few men his mother brought along.

Silence reigned between them. They emerged into the daylight, finding themselves in a small, secluded area on the rear part of the building where the morning sun cast long shadows.

Sandro and Luis glanced around the surroundings, but aside from the single vehicle at the front of the building, there was nothing more. Luis turned to Kayden, giving him a questioning look.

Kayden didn’t reply. Luis sighed. He and Sandro just silently followed the man that led them to the vehicle.

Once they were inside and the door shut, Kayden finally glanced over them and replied, his eyes inscrutable but his voice was full of conviction, "I have them apprehended as soon as they exited the building...same goes with my mother. We changed locations, and we’re going there right now."

The vehicle sped away from the building. Kayden drove in silence, focusing on the road, while the other two got on their own devices.

Luis contacted Azrael, but halfway through, before his call was answered, his thumb finger pressed the end call. His body moved like it used to, reporting right away to his boss, but this time, he hesitated.

How else will he relay what happened? Even if he worded it differently, avoiding mentioning his omega father, soon he’ll find out eventually.

Luis swallowed hard. He sighed and shared his unknowingly muttered worries as he looked out the window, gathering the attention of the alphas with him, "I should report this to Sir Azrael, but I don’t know how..."

Sandro noticed Kayden flinched. His eyes turned to the rearview mirror after, glancing at the worried secretary. He then remarked, "We should first...get to the bottom of this, before reporting to him. You just said he was on a happy outing with his family. Disclosing that information on this bright day...would devastate him. Let’s hear from Kayden’s mother first. I may not know her more than you do, but...it doesn’t make sense that she freed us herself after putting on that act. It’s suspicious. My instincts are telling me there’s something more to this. And personally, I don’t think your mother is...the one behind all this."

Kayden briefly glanced at Sandro. They spent quite a lot of time during college together, but he wasn’t really part of their group because he seemed conscious of their statuses. And the latter was more comfortable with Azrael alone.

He was relieved hearing those words. "She’s my mother...so I’d like to believe that you’re right. Let’s find out first, before telling Azi."

The three reached a silent agreement.
