Chapter 181: Raine Montgomery
The door creaked open with a slow, deliberate motion, and the air inside tensed and paused dramatically, as though giving highlight on the unfolding events.
With bated breaths, Sandro and Luis watched the door, their eyes focused, eyes that held suspicion and curiosity, mixed with trepidation on what would be their future after the mastermind showed their faces.
The dim light from the stairway filtered into the underground room, adding light from the dark space lit only by the morning light passing from the gaps on the exhaust fan.
Finally, the figure emerged, garnering shock from the two abducted victims.
Luis’ eyes widened, and even after he prepared his heart for the big reveal, astonishment still caught him in a downpour, washing away his sense of dread for a moment, only to be replaced with utter disbelief.
With a shocked and broken voice, Luis mumbled, "Ma’am...Raine..."
Sandro’s eyes bulged, abruptly whirling his head to the secretary beside him. He heard the name before but he had little information about the woman who appeared, clad in a dark suit, with a demeanor poised and unyielding, eyeing them both with sharp and cold eyes.
Eyes that were familiar to Luis and Sandro, a distinctive feature that the Del Valles have – those sharp, cold, yet clear and greyish eyes.
Raine Del Valle Montgomery.
Luis shuddered. Inside him, he was panicking and anxiousness started to rise to his chest, making him heave a little bit harder. How could he not? It was Kayden Montgomery and his team who were backing him!
The calmness he had vanished into thin air, replaced with the growing anxiety and doubt.
What would Kayden Montgomery, who was out there receiving orders from Azrael, and watching their back hidden from the trees and bushes waiting for the right time to appear and catch his cousin’s enemy, do now that he found out it was his mother all along?
Luis dreaded the answer. An anxious thought raced in his head, what now? He and his team were stationed not far from here, so he probably saw her arrive. If only I could hear what was happening outside!
Kayla Montgomery had lent her devices – a tracking device embedded on the sole of his shoe, and a bug camouflaged inside his wristwatch.
The sickly twin sister of Rage Del Valle, was the one behind all those meticulous clean-ups?
Raine’s gaze swept over the room, lingering briefly on the bearded man before settling back on Luis and Sandro. A faint yet somehow sinister smile danced on her lips, one that spoke authority and confidence.
Though her slender and thin arms seemed weak and brittle, her aura and pheromones spoke volumes.
Sandro swallowed hard. That feeling he had when he first faced Azrael’s father rose within him once more, solidifying the fact that the person before him was truly a Del Valle, a menacing profile in society.
Contrary to her haughty and domineering presence, Raine Montgomery’s voice came out soft-spoken yet clear, "Well, I didn’t want this little fiasco to end up in a bloody scene, so I will have the both of you live just...maybe...a bit incapacitated to talk at all?"
Sandro and Luis shuddered. The bearded man in the corner laughed, enjoying the horror he witnessed in the two people’s eyes.
Sandro and Luis exchanged worried and alarmed glances. The fact that Raine Montgomery was involved in that situation only deepened the mystery.
Why is Rage Del Valle’s twin sister interacting with the man who violated her brother-in-law?
Raine walked closer to the two seated in their respective cages. A hint of satisfaction flashed in her eyes as he looked at the bearded man. "You’ve done your job well. I knew I could count on you."
The bearded man grinned, "I can do just everything with the right amount of money. Now tell me, what should I do next? If you increase the payment, I will do it more meticulously. Though, I would prefer that you won’t pull a trick on me again, Madame. I’ve wasted a decade of my life in prison. You should pay for it too."
The bearded man rubbed his palms, conveying his uncontained excitement to get the money he was promised.
Raine Montgomery furrowed her brows as she answered, "If I hadn’t put you in prison, you would have been a rotten corpse long ago. My twin brother might have been devastated that time, but he searched for you high and low, to rip you into pieces. I saved your measly life, so don’t go talking to me like that."
The bearded man’s face distorted in contempt, "You could have helped me hide abroad! But you chose, of all places, a prison? Isn’t that because you wanted to silence me for what you did?!"
Raine’s face hardened. She snarled at the man, "Fool. Do you think my brother won’t find you if you hide in another country? You’d only prolong your sorry life, but you’d be dragged back into hell in no time. Rage has connections everywhere, don’t be cocky, and just be grateful. Now, get out of my sight and do what my men will tell you to do next. I will pay thrice the amount you received today."
Raine Montgomery snapped her fingers and another person in a black suit came forward, carrying a dark duffle bag.
The bearded man’s face beamed; their recent conversation was already out of his head. He eagerly went to the bag thrown by the man in the center.
He checked the bag and grinned widely; his yellowish teeth contrasted with his black beard.
Raine gracefully turned a quarter, as though she was giving room for the man to pass through. She then said, "Someone will meet you upstairs. He will tell you what to do. Be sure to follow his instructions."
The bearded man replied earnestly, "Remember what you said. Three times." He showed three fingers to Raine, making sure of their verbal agreement.
Raine replied, "I’ll remember."
With that, the bearded man went upstairs, followed by the other man working under Raine. The woman watched the two retreating figures until they disappeared from her sight before she spun around and approached Sandro while pulling a small knife in the pocket of her dark suit.
Sandro was alarmed. He could kick the approaching woman if he wanted to, snatch the knife, and escape. But looking up at the older woman’s expression, his movement froze when he saw nothing but regret and guilt.
Both Luis and Sandro were rendered speechless. Before they knew it, their hands were freed, and Raine Montgomery was already at the door, walking upstairs.
