Bound To The Ice Dragon King -
Chapter 37: Breaking the spell
Chapter 37: Breaking the spell
As the morning sun warmed the horizon, signaling a new day, Draven sat patiently on the chair, his demeanor cold, awaiting the arrival of Rinus. Although Draven was still wan, his energy seemed a hundred times better than the day before.
Rhea couldn’t help but gaze at him more than she should. After retrieving his essence, his complexion looked more paler than how it used to be. Even his healing process seemed to have increased by a lot, because the wound on his back had closed up completely leaving behind a little red mark. She watched as he causally wore his shirt and sat back down.
Not long, Sila led Rinus out of his room and brought him to sit across Draven on the chair. She made sure he was comfortable on the chair before stepping back.
Draven didn’t waste time, he used his blade to cut open his palm to draw blood, before grasping Rinus’ hot hand.
Seeing his actions, Sila couldn’t help but get anxious, she chimed in, "Are you sure you can break the spell?"
Draven shot her a glance, he then said, "I’m not hundred percent sure, but it’s a known fact that only a frost magic can break a flame spell. So I’ll try to do my best to cure him."
Sila glanced worriedly at Rinus, she clasped his other hand and gave it a gentle squeeze, "Rinus, you will soon get better." She assured, then glanced at Draven, "Please don’t let him feel too much pain."
After saying that, she stepped back and sat beside Rhea who gave her a reassuring smile, "Don’t worry, he will be fine."
Without another word, Draven proceeded on it. He took Rinus’ hand and cut his palm as well. When he drew out blood, he clasped their hands together combining their blood.
Instantly, a bitter wind howled through the entire yard, chilly air began to radiate from Draven, whipping up flurries of leaves that danced in the air. Draven’s breath was visible in the freezing air, his piercing blue eyes shimmering.
In a brief moment, a radiant white and red light emanated from the hands they held together. In an instant, the light disappeared. However, without delay, Rinus’ body was enveloped by the luminous white light, which emanated from within him.
Rhea observed as the icy white light gradually started to enter Rinus’ body, merging with the flame within him as though engaged in a battle. Although the spell that had been cast on Rinus was powerful, it appeared that it didn’t possess the same strength as Draven’s chilling nature. The white light proceeded to displace the red one.
However the red soon took over again, Rinus writhed in agony, his body consumed by the internal flame. Sweat poured from his feverish brow, his skin flushed a dangerous shade of crimson. The flames within seemed to consume him, threatening to reduce him to ashes.
Sila leapt out of the chair, "He’s in pain, do something!" She yelled in panic.
Draven frowned, then raised his hand, "Quiet!" He took the dagger and cut his palm again to draw blood before dripping a few drops on Rinus’ already cut palm.
This time, his cold blood seeped into Rinus’ body, and the chilling white light became more intense. Even Rhea who was cold blooded shivered as she felt the chill radiating from Draven’s body.
As Draven’s cold blood enveloped the suffering Rinus, a glimmer of hope sparked in Sila’s eyes. The flame in Rinus body flickered, their intensity waning under the influence of the chilling light. Slowly, Rinus’ agonized screams subsided to relieved gasps, and it seemed as though Draven’s powers were prevailing.
Then it smoothly dispelled the heat down Rinus’ feet.
Rhea released the breath she hadn’t realized she was holding until now. She placed a hand on her chest and sighed in relief. Hopefully, everything went well. She turned towards Sila and noticed the woman also smiled in relief.
However, their joy was only short-lived. Their smiles began to fall when Rinus’expression scrunched up and he clutched his chest. His face was covered in cold sweat as he tumbled down the chair, his body began to violently shake as a wave of searing heat surged from within his body, scorching the icy light that had momentarily subdued the flames.
Sila’s eyes widened in terror, she quickly went down on her knees before him. She reached her hand to touch him but quickly pulled back as the heat from his body was too hot,
"Rinus?" She called.
It seemed like he could hear her voice because his closed eyes immediately flew open. However, he no longer had his blank and lifeless gaze, his eyes looked as if he was back to his senses, but the pain was preventing him from speaking.
Rinus forced his mouth open, however, only a hot smoke emanated. His eyes widened in terror as his flesh started to liquefy, dripping like wax under the blistering heat. His body contorted in unimaginable pain, his screams resounding through the desolate woods.
Rhea quickly knelt down before her cousin, her eyes glimmering with tears, "Rinus..." She cried,"I think breaking the flame spell will cause death. We can’t let him melt away." Rhea clenched her teeth, "Rinus’, who did this to you? I won’t let that person go unpunished. Tell me who cast the spell on you?"
Rinus’ skin continued to melt, he tried to lift his head up as if he wanted to say something, but his neck had turned like jelly due to the melting, however, he managed to say a few words,
"...Rhea...stop them... capital."
Tears rolled down her cheeks, "Who are they?" She cried with emotions clenching her throat.
"Rinus." Sila cried out as if just snapping out of her dazed state, "You can’t die..."
Slowly, Rinus managed to turn his head towards the serpent. He locked eyes with her as a bitter smile graced his lips. Flames danced along his skin, melting it away slowly, revealing the raw and pulsating flesh beneath. Each flicker of the flame seemed to devour his essence, leaving behind a trail of smoke and despair. It seemed like he was struggling to form a sentence as smoke emanated from his mouth.
With great effort, he managed to open his cracked and charred lips, his voice barely a whisper. "Thank... you," he managed to gasp, his words laced with gratitude.
But before he could finish his sentence, his body succumbed to the relentless fire. The flames consumed him, devouring every inch of his being until all that remained was a liquefied form, a grotesque puddle of flesh and bone.
Sila’s eyes widened in shock, her trembling hands clasping her mouth in horror. Time seemed to stand still as she stared at the remains of him, her mind unable to comprehend the tragic reality before her.
"No, no, Rinus! You can’t die...!" Sila finally cried out after some moment.
As if sensing her disbelief, the melted body began to transform. The flesh, now reduced to ashes, lifted into the air, carried away by a gentle breeze. It swirled around them in a hauntingly beautiful dance before disappearing into the wide expanse of the sky, leaving the world behind.
Sila reached her hand, but all she grasped was a hot lonely air that was left behind by his ashes.
"Ahhh! He can’t die!" Her voice was hoarse as she cried out on the hard ground. Tears streamed down her face as she clasped her trembling hands together. "Rinus!"
Rhea remained motionless on the floor, tears streaming down her face as well, but unable to make a sound. Despite not having a close relationship with her cousin previously, witnessing his state and his previous act of heroism had caused her to view him in a positive way. She glanced at Sila, who was also crying, but quickly averted her gaze without uttering a word. At this moment, she had no comforting words to offer the distraught woman.
Draven looked at the two women on the floor before glancing at the hand he’d held Rinus with earlier, he curled the hand into fist but didn’t say a word and remained silent.
