Chapter 64: Roasting
Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Roasting
"A very good one," Sophia said confidently.
"They have no real proof, but we do. We have your years of good work, the broken security system, and possible witnesses. We’ll make sure the court sees the truth."
Adam and his wife exchanged a relieved look. His wife wiped away a tear.
"Thank you," she whispered. "We just want justice."
Sophia gave a small smile.
"Justice is what I do best. We’ll fight this case, and I promise—we’ll do everything we can to win."
...
That very same day, the Waters Family went to the hospital. They got Aurora admitted.
Adam went to deal with the paperwork.
Mary, Olivia, and Theodore were chatting.
Adriana and Lucas were with Adam to help him.
Emily was sitting beside Aurora and when she heard that Aurora needed water, she went to fetch it from the dispenser.
Due to availability issues, the private room wasn’t available and Aurora had to be admitted to the general ward.
The Waters family were immersed in their conversation when,
"Emily?" A shrill voice sounded.
Everyone turned around and saw a woman holding her son glaring in Emily’s direction.
Emily’s heart skipped a beat when she heard the familiar voice.
She turned around and to her utter horror saw her mother-in-law Margret.
Margret charged up to Emily and snatched away the water cup from her hand. Without listening to her explanation, she threw the water on Emily’s face.
"You b*tch! How dare you vanish for 4 days and send the divorce paper to my son on the 5th day? Have you become someone’s mistress?
Or have you cheated on my son and now you are fearful that he will discover the truth after 6 months of your pregnancy and leave you?"
Emily stood frozen, the cold water dripping from her face. Her heart pounded in her chest.
The entire ward had gone silent. People turned to stare, whispering among themselves.
Margret’s eyes were full of anger as she glared at Emily, waiting for her response.
Emily clenched her fists. She took a deep breath, forcing herself to stay calm.
"Margret," she said firmly. "This is a hospital. Keep your voice down."
Margret scoffed. "Oh, now you care about being proper? Where was all this respect when you abandoned my son?"
Emily wiped the water off her face with her sleeve.
"I didn’t abandon anyone," she said.
"I left because I had to. And the divorce papers? I sent them because I’m done. I don’t owe you an explanation."
Margret’s face turned red with rage.
"You ungrateful woman! My son gave you everything, and this is how you repay him? Do you think you can just walk away like that?!"
Before Emily could answer, Theodore stood up and pulled Emily behind him,
"Excuse me ma’am, who are you? And why are you charging at Emily?"
Olivia who was about to protect Emily: "..." Brother you should have stayed silent!
Sure enough, Margret misunderstood Emily and Theodore’s faces and asked,
"Is the divorce paper because of this man? So you are into younger guys? Heh! But this one looks like a sprout who hasn’t even matured yet!"
Theodore’s eye twitched. "Sprout?" he muttered under his breath, clearly offended.
Emily sighed, rubbing her temples.
"Margret, you seriously need to stop this nonsense."
Margret crossed her arms.
"Nonsense? Then explain! Why did you leave my son? Why are you with this boy now? And don’t lie to me!"
Theodore scoffed. "I’m not a boy," he mumbled, but no one paid attention.
Emily took a deep breath, trying to control her frustration.
However before she could even answer, Olivia who had been silent till now suddenly stood up and shouted,
"So you are the villainous mother-in-law about whom Emily was talking about?"
Margret: "..."
Emily: "..."
George: "..."
Olivia snorted and looked at Margret up and down with a disdainful look,
"Aunty, let’s be real here—your son isn’t some rare gem that Emily is crying over. If anything, he’s a rusty old coin no one wants to pick up!"
Margret gasped loudly, clutching her chest like she had just been stabbed.
"How dare you! My George is a perfect gentleman! Any woman would be lucky to have him!"
Olivia let out a dramatic laugh.
"Lucky? Oh wow, I didn’t know being controlled, disrespected, and treated like a personal maid was considered ’luck’ these days.
Should we start a charity for all the ’lucky’ women suffering like Emily?"
Margret’s face turned red.
"You rude little girl! You don’t know anything about my son! He is handsome, hardworking, and from a respectable family!"
Olivia gasped in fake shock.
"Oh no! How could I forget? Your son is truly special! I mean, how many men in the world have the unique talent of being a lazy, spoiled brat while still thinking they are kings?"
Theodore snickered behind Olivia but quickly covered his mouth when Margret shot him a glare.
Margret pointed a shaking finger at Olivia.
"You’re just jealous because you could never get a man like my George!"
Olivia pretended to think for a moment before snapping her fingers.
"You’re absolutely right! I could never get a man like George... because I have standards!"
Margret let out an angry huff.
"Emily should be grateful she was even allowed to be part of our family! Do you know how many girls were lining up to marry my son?"
Olivia rolled her eyes.
"Oh, I believe you. I’m sure there were so many girls fighting over George—right up until they actually got to know him!"
George, who had been silent all this time, finally spoke.
"Hey! I am a great husband!"
Olivia turned to him with a blank expression.
"Oh? Really? Let’s test that theory. Did you ever take Emily on a vacation?"
George frowned. "Well... no, but—"
Olivia nodded. "Okay. Did you ever buy her gifts?"
George nodded with confidence, "I did." He even puffed his chest.
Olivia gave him a disdainful glance and made a ’tsk’ sound. She turned toward Emily and asked,
"What did you even like about this peacock? His face’s changing color? Even a peacock has a tail to flaunt while he lacks even a spine to stand up for you."
