Chapter 282: Chapter 282: Abroad
She turned toward the host and gave him a small nod.
The host cleared his throat, straightened his tie, and picked up the mic again.
"Well then... after confirming everything, I now officially announce Aurora as this year’s Homecoming Queen!"
The gym burst into cheers.
People clapped, shouted her name, and even some who doubted her earlier were now smiling and cheering for her.
Aurora stood up gracefully, smiling as she walked toward the stage. The crown was placed on her head, and photos were taken. It was all perfect.
After the ceremony ended, Aurora quietly left the gym and started walking toward the classrooms. She looked around, confused.
"Where’s Mia?" she murmured. "And Spencer?"
She walked down the hallway, still in her crown, when suddenly...
Whoosh
A hand reached out from the side door of a classroom and pulled her inside!
"Hey!" Aurora yelped, her body tensing. She instinctively raised her arm to elbow the person behind her, just in case it was someone suspicious.
But then she heard a familiar voice.
"Don’t panic," Spencer whispered softly, his breath close to her ear.
Aurora stopped moving. Her body instantly relaxed. She let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Spencer wrapped his arms around her from behind and rested his chin gently on her shoulder.
"You really know how to ignore me," he said with a low, teasing tone. "It’s been a whole week. Not one proper hug."
Aurora chuckled softly and turned her head slightly.
"Well, you’re my canary," she said with a small smile. "This is the least you should expect from me."
Spencer chuckled too, but there was a little hint of sadness in his voice.
"Yeah, I know I’m your canary," he said, "but sometimes... you make me feel like I’m just some kind of disposable canary."
Aurora raised her eyebrows, laughing.
"You’re taking those words way too seriously," she said playfully.
Then, she turned around, looked into his eyes, and leaned in to press a soft kiss on his lips.
When she pulled away, she teased, "You’re just like a cat. If I don’t give you enough attention, you start scratching around for it."
Spencer laughed at her words.
"And you," he said, "you’re more like the real cat. All aloof and mysterious. Sometimes I wonder if you’d even notice if I disappeared."
Aurora narrowed her eyes and gave him a half-smile. "You really know how to get on my nerves."
Spencer just chuckled. "Well, I learned from the best," he said with a wink.
Aurora shook her head, amused but curious now.
"Okay, okay. So tell me, why did you drag me in here like some kind of spy mission?"
Spencer raised an eyebrow. "Can’t I pull you into private spaces unless there’s some big task?"
Aurora folded her arms. "I just thought maybe you had something personal to say. Something serious."
Spencer’s smile faded a little, and he looked down for a second before looking back at her. "Actually... I do."
Aurora blinked, her expression softening. "Go on. As long as it’s not something crazy that crosses my bottom line, I promise I won’t scold you."
Spencer gave a weak smile. "It’s not about crossing lines," he said. "It’s just... I have to leave."
Aurora’s heart suddenly squeezed. It was such a strange feeling, like someone had taken her heart and was trying to crush it in their fist.
"Leave?" she repeated. "What do you mean? Why?"
Spencer took a slow breath.
"The fight in my family is getting worse. It’s affecting too many people. I think... maybe it’s going to even affect you."
Aurora shook her head quickly.
"I’m fine. I can help. I’m good at some hacking stuff, remember? Maybe I can.."
Spencer stopped her with a look, full of warmth and sadness.
He stared at her for a moment and smiled quietly. "I can’t believe it," he said softly.
"You, the girl who always acted like she didn’t need anyone, just said she wants to help me."
He brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear gently. His voice dropped even lower, tender but serious.
"I know you can protect yourself. I know you can protect me. But Aurora... you can’t protect your family from this."
Aurora froze, her breath catching in her throat.
"If something happened to them... if they got hurt because of me..." Spencer looked down. "You’d never forgive me. You’d hate me. You’d leave me. And I don’t ever want that."
He looked back into her eyes. "So even if it means I have to go far away... even if it hurts... I’ll do it. I’ll go. I can’t risk you hating me."
Aurora stared at him. She had heard so much about Spencer over the past two months.
The cold, rich boy. The football captain. The guy who never dated anyone. A perfect top student. A mystery.
But she never imagined that he’d become this. A boy so in love he’d rather leave her than risk losing her.
She looked down, thinking hard. Then she said quietly,
"I won’t say something silly like ’I’d give up my family for you.’ I’ve always loved my family the most. That hasn’t changed."
Spencer’s heart sank hearing those words. It still hurt, even if he had expected it. For him, Aurora had become his world. But for Aurora, her family was still number one.
Still, he had accepted that a long time ago. Even if it stung.
But then Aurora continued.
"...But now," she said slowly, looking back up at him, "I’ve started to think of you as part of my family too."
Spencer blinked. His heart skipped a beat.
Aurora kept going.
"I see you as someone I want to keep in my future. Not officially, maybe. I’m not ready for labels like boyfriend or girlfriend. But still... you’re important. And I’ll help you. I’ll protect you. That’s what family does."
Spencer stood there, speechless for a second. Her words hit him harder than anything else ever had.
She... wanted him in her future.
It wasn’t the grandest confession. But coming from Aurora, it meant everything.
He slowly wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into a hug. He didn’t care that her crown tilted a little. He just held her close.
But then, Aurora felt something strange. A cold, wet spot touched her knee.
She pulled back a little and looked down.
Spencer’s shoulders were shaking slightly. His eyes were wet.
"I’ll miss you," he said quietly, his voice choked.
Aurora’s heart twisted again. "Isn’t there any other way?" she whispered.
Spencer looked at her with a tired smile. "Maybe... maybe there would’ve been, if you didn’t have people you loved so much."
Aurora’s hands clenched at her sides.
He wasn’t blaming her. He was protecting her. And that made it worse somehow.
Because right now, for the first time... she wasn’t sure she wanted to be protected. Not if it meant losing him.
Aurora stared at Spencer, her eyes serious and filled with worry.
"When are you leaving?" she asked softly.
Spencer looked away for a moment, then said, "Probably in a month."
Aurora nodded, trying to stay calm. "Can you tell me what happened? All of it."
Spencer sighed and didn’t hide anything.
"My mother’s illegitimate child and my father’s illegitimate child... they teamed up. That part didn’t matter much to me. I’m already in control of many things in my family. I have power, influence, and support. But..." he paused, his face darkening a little, "my father’s brother, my uncle, suddenly joined their side."
Aurora’s eyes widened. "Your uncle?"
Spencer nodded.
"Yeah. He’s using his shares to help them. Together, they now have enough power to pressure me. They’re planning something. I can feel it. And soon, they’ll act."
Aurora clenched her fist. "Can’t I just buy those shares from them?"
Spencer shook his head with a sad smile. "It’s not that simple. Those shares are everything to them. They won’t sell. Not for any price. Not even if you offer them double."
Aurora took a deep breath, trying not to panic. "Then what can I do to help you?"
Spencer looked at her gently. "It’s better if we stage a breakup. We’ll make it look real. That way, they won’t come after you."
Aurora’s heart dropped. She felt something inside her break. Her chest hurt, and her eyes stung.
"You want to fake a breakup?" she asked quietly.
Spencer nodded again. "Yes. If they think we’re done... they won’t target you. They’ll leave you out of it. And I need to know you’re safe."
Aurora bit her lip. She hated it. She didn’t want to lose him, even for show.
"Isn’t there anything else I can do?" she asked again, her voice shaking.
Spencer looked at her with soft but firm eyes.
"Just stay away from danger. That’s all I want. You’re strong, Aurora. But this... this is a battle filled with people who don’t just use money. They use power, secrets, crime... connections I can’t even count."
