Chapter 280: Chapter 280: Bribe

He held up an envelope, just about to open it...

Then his hand paused.

He pressed one hand to the little earpiece in his ear. It looked like he was listening to something someone was saying to him.

He nodded quickly and then looked back at the crowd.

With a deep breath, he opened the envelope and smiled brightly.

"And the Homecoming Queen of this year is..." he said, pausing just a moment for suspense.

"...Aurora!"

The gym exploded in cheers. People clapped, and some even stood up. Mia screamed, "I knew it!" and gave Aurora a big hug. Aurora smiled, calm but proud, as she stood up gracefully.

But not everyone was happy.

Diana’s mouth dropped open. Her hands clenched into fists. Her friends looked around in shock.

Suddenly, one of Diana’s close friends jumped up and shouted, "No! This is fake! It can’t be! Diana was supposed to win!"

People around her stared, some frowning.

"She is the Homecoming Queen!" the girl yelled again, her voice shaky. "She’s always been the queen!"

The host looked over calmly. "The votes were counted fairly. The results were checked twice."

The girl who had stood up crossed her arms and shouted louder, "I saw the results before coming here! I know Diana’s name was on it! If you think I’m lying, then show everyone the card you’re holding!"

The whole gym fell quiet. Whispers ran through the crowd like wind through trees. All eyes turned toward the host.

The host’s face tensed. He looked uncomfortable. Diana, sitting in her seat, slowly started to smile.

Of course, she smiled.

Because she knew.

She already knew that Aurora had been the real winner at first. But last minute, Diana had begged her powerful parents to change the results. She was confident they had done it; after all, they always made sure she got what she wanted.

And now, the host was trapped. She could see it in his face. He knew something.

Good, she thought. Let him show the card. Once everyone saw her name printed clearly on it, they would all turn on Aurora. They would say Aurora had tried to cheat. And she’d finally prove once and for all who the real queen was.

But the host didn’t move.

He just stood there, sweating a little, clearly torn about what to do.

Then, suddenly...

A deep, calm voice rang through the gym.

"Diana," Spencer’s voice echoed, cool and sharp. "Do you really want to see the truth?"

Gasps spread across the room. Everyone turned.

Spencer.

All the girls stared. Some of them covered their mouths and whispered, "Is he... standing up for Aurora?"

"Didn’t someone say they were dating?"

"I thought it was just a rumor!"

Spencer stepped forward slowly, his hands in his pockets, his face unreadable.

Diana’s smile faltered for a second, but then she quickly straightened up.

"I’m not lying," she said smoothly. "Let the host show the card. I’ll shut my mouth after that."

Spencer nodded once. "Fine. Then I’ll show it."

He walked up to the host, who looked a little shocked, but didn’t resist. Spencer took the envelope from him, pulled out the paper, and turned toward the crowd.

He held the card up high for everyone to see.

The name written on it in bold letters was...

Diana.

Gasps filled the gym again.

Voices burst out.

"What?!"

"So... Aurora tried to cheat?!"

"I can’t believe this..."

"Maybe she pressured the staff or something!"

"I always thought Diana was better anyway..."

Diana heard it all, and her smile grew wide.

She couldn’t help it; her heart jumped with pride. Spencer had shown her name. Not Aurora’s.

She thought, ’Maybe he does like me after all... maybe he was just acting cold because he was trying to resist me.’

She stood up gracefully, brushed her hair back, and gave a soft smile to Spencer.

"Thank you, Spencer," she said sweetly. "Now that the truth is clear, I really appreciate you showing it to everyone."

Meanwhile, a few of Diana’s friends stormed over to Aurora.

One of them, wearing a flashy red dress, crossed her arms and snapped,

"Well? Now that you’ve been caught, you should apologize to Diana. This crown was hers from the start, and you tried to steal it."

Aurora stayed calm. She raised one eyebrow and said coolly, "Is it over yet? Don’t rush."

Mia jumped in, standing protectively next to her.

"Yeah! Aurora is the real Homecoming Queen. Diana probably used her family to mess with the results. Everyone knows Diana has connections behind the scenes."

People around them nodded slightly. The rumors about Diana’s parents were well known.

Diana laughed, loud and proud. "You think I used my connections?" She turned toward Mia with a sharp smile. "I haven’t even started using them yet. But since you’re accusing me now..."

Her smile turned cold.

"...I will use them. And the first thing I’ll do is get you expelled."

She gave Mia a death glare. Her message was loud and clear: ’I can ruin you if I want.’

Mia’s face went a little pale. Her legs shook for just a second. But then she straightened up, clenched her fists, and said loudly, "Go ahead. Do what you want. I won’t sit quietly while you hurt Aurora."

Aurora looked at Mia, touched by her bravery. She placed a hand on Mia’s arm.

She turned to Diana’s friends, her face calm, her voice smooth. "So... you’re here for an apology?" she asked.

Diana’s friends smirked, thinking Aurora had finally admitted defeat. One of them flipped her hair and said proudly,

"Yeah, finally some sense. You need to kneel down in front of Diana and beg for forgiveness. Again and again, until she’s satisfied."

Another girl nodded quickly, arms crossed. "That’s what someone like you should do after trying to cheat."

Aurora raised an eyebrow.

"Interesting. So that’s how you treat someone who bribes the host and tries to change the result?"

Diana’s friends gasped like they’d been insulted.
