Chapter 902: Chapter 209 Helen’s Time
"Helen Lan, it’s an honor to receive your guidance," said Lord Ali, the kangaroo chief shaman, with a dose of insincerity as he faced his much younger opponent.
"I am but a novice, and it’s my honor to exchange knowledge with you, Lord Shaman," Helen replied with a shy yet enchanting smile that caught even the seasoned shaman by surprise.
The Base Dragon obediently lowered its body, and Helen daintily stepped from its snout and, leveraging its head-raising motion, gracefully leapt onto its broad back.
With a "swoosh," Helen pulled off the cloth covering the war drum, revealing a large Beamon-style General’s drum tightly secured by thick leather straps to the back of the Base Dragon. The bulky black cowhide drum revealed only one drum surface, bordered by layers upon layers of black and white crane feathers.
Helen picked up two hollowed-out Kui Niu bone hammers, adjusting the wind chimes attached to them by two silver chains.
At that moment, many Beamons secretly lamented seeing such a beautiful fox shamaness using a traditional war drum; it was simply too jarring. No matter how many crane feathers covered it, it couldn’t mask the crude aura of the drum, which would suit the burly Tauren shamaness from the Buer Tribe better. A fox lady would be more suited to an ivory board or a golden harp.
Unfortunately, if anyone had been closer to Helen, they would have noticed weak reverberations and the trembling of feathers on the drum’s surface beneath the layers of crane feathers.
Lord Ali, the kangaroo chief shaman, had chosen the durable Mordant drum as his musical accessory, hung under the giant Moth sculpt’s belly, looking like a huge mushroom. Played under the armpit with one hand striking the drumhead, it perfectly suited the chief shaman, who suffered from a talon-twitching malady.
Lord Ali’s Mordant drum also had several magic crystals embedded in its sides, but compared to Helen’s hidden cluster of magic crystals beneath the feathered drum cover, it was as pitiful as a dwarf standing next to a Sky Giant ——Old Liu was convinced that Ali must be a corrupt man. If he hadn’t served a term as Shaman Wei An in the Southern Cross Star Forest, it was unlikely that his Mordant drum would be so fruitful.
"Boom Boom Boom〜"
"Bang Bang Bang〜"
Neither shaman liked pleasantries. After exchanging a ready look, the distinct sounds of their war drums and the vigorous anthems rang out simultaneously. Lord Ali’s anthem was aged and deep, while Helen’s was sharp and resonant. Her dance flourished with the strikes of the bone hammers, twirling left and right, with red silk fluttering around her like a sprite dancing in fire.
Lord Ali was quick in executing his war chant, but when Helen’s resplendent dual auras from her song and dance enveloped him, his second resplendent aura was almost ready to release.
Liu, sitting in the stands with Moer, exchanged a look and shared a secretive smile.
The rhythm of the competition was now completely under Helen’s control. Under her swift attack strategy, the kangaroo chief shaman instinctively sped up to match the release speed of his chants and dances, surpassing the level of the female serpent instructor Cui Beixi by a margin, but that was about the extent of his skills.
Overwhelming a chief shaman right from the start won silent cheers for the young shamaness from the watching Beamons; some also worried for her, though, as her simultaneous song and dance, while fast in releasing auras, also doubled her spiritual power consumption — a bottleneck not easily overcome by mere talent.
The brilliant auras from both sides intermingled, resulting in a frenetic and joyous clash, but on the tenth exchange, a sudden dark and golden fierce light burst from Helen’s twin bone hammers, launching a malevolent and a resplendent aura straight at Lord Ali.
Lord Ali’s hand nearly lost its grip on the Mordant drum, nearly sending it flying.
While the average Beamon in the stands simply enjoyed the show, the shaman attendees in the private boxes were in an uproar.
The king and the pope on the royal seat were completely dumbfounded, and all the nobles were as stunned as statues.
Cambridge High Priestess Helen Lan was actually using the legendary Beamon "Patient Endurance Kui Drum!"
In fact, a question had already been lingering in everyone’s minds — despite needing various hand gestures for her war dance, Helen’s drum would still produce heavy heartbeat sounds and drum noises even when the bone hammers didn’t strike the drumhead.
This combination of a malevolent and a resplendent aura instantly reminded the shamans of the dragon shaman Kochis’s musical accessory — the divine "Patient Endurance Kui Drum."
Yet, there was another question that baffled all the shamans: The dragon shaman’s divine drum unleashed only one "Delayed Aura" per ninety-nine strikes, so why could Helen Lan’s war drum release an additional "Endurance Aura"? Could it be that it had obtained the heart of a Kui Niu?
How could this be possible?
Kui Niu were high-order magical beasts on land, but as aquatic magical beasts, they were nearly at the super-creature level in water. Under normal circumstances, Kui Niu seldom left their ancient marshes. Capturing one to extract its heart was unimaginable! Even Kochis, the dragon shaman with a Giant Dragon magical beast, had never achieved this — how could Helen, only possessing a Base Dragon, possibly have done so?
