Chapter 394: Chapter 86 Fairy Dragon_2

In these two major wars, there had been no systematic formation for aerial combat. In both conflicts, aerial troops either participated in similar troop confrontations, or served as scouts and disruptors of enemy logistics, occasionally undertaking the duty of ambushing some lightly defended areas.

Upon repeatedly hearing the Lord emphasize ground attacks through diving, the Fairy Dragon frowned in confusion.

The armor of aerial cavalry was far less robust than that of ground cavalry. Engaging in ground combat had never been within the capabilities of aerial cavalry. Upon reducing altitude, even a single arrow could potentially claim the expensive life of an aerial knight.

Even the most powerful aerial cavalry in history, the "Dragon Knights," did not rely on their oversized dragon spears with seven blades. How many enemies could be killed with a single dragon spear?

Dragon Knights relied mainly on the robust magic and physical attack power of their dragon mounts, making them the only perfect aerial troop type, albeit extremely limited in number. In such a grand era context, the upper hand was given to troops with superior mounts, making formations less important. Even a squadron of harpies could not resist a Dragon Knight, so no structured formation strategies like those of infantry and cavalry had been conceived.

After the aerial warfare in Tennessee one thousand years ago, the aerial troops of humans and Beamons gradually faded from the historical stage, and large-scale reorganizations have not been seen to this day. The fundamental reason was not that they couldn’t be restructured, but that organizing aerial troops would require considerable financial expenses and yet, they didn’t offer much practical combat utility.

In every battle, ground troops were always the mainstream. The decisive battles always occurred on the ground, not in the sky.

Among Beamons’ former aerial troops, weapons used by Birdmen and Batmen were all spears. Once ascending to the sky, how many spears could they possibly carry? Human Griffon Knights carried expensive crossbow bolts, which posed a significant issue for reloading after rapid firing.

Apart from Dragon Knights who could command their giant dragon mounts to use magic and their robust bodies to inflict massive damage to ground enemies, the other aerial troops could hardly make an assertive impact on the battle due to their limited numbers when confronting ground troops, even if they had certain advantages.

The lesson learned by the Demon Clan ten thousand years ago has clarified all issues. The Obsidian Destroyers and Gargoyles were shot into pieces by the Dwarves’ Ancient Power Fireguns before they even had time for a diving attack.

The Ancient Power Firegun with severe magic shortage in the hands of the Pigeon Lord now doesn’t prove anything. An Ancient Power Firegun endowed with sufficient wind magic power could have a shooting range of up to three thousand yards. Under such range, no flying troops, except the Giant Dragon, would have the power to fight back.

In the present era, apart from the Saint Paul Church where Holy Knights possessed aerial magical beasts as mounts, only a few military powerhouse countries in the Aegean human kingdoms retained a small number of aerial scouts.

The Fairy Dragon didn’t harbor much hope for the Newton Aerial Knights being assembled by the Lord. Despite knowing the Lord possessed the rare Life Spring which could mass-produce the Morading’s Wrath, the accuracy of aerial attacks was a significant problem. The unit damage output of the Morading’s Wrath was pretty decent but not invincible. Even if the Lord could master the formation of the forty aerial knights, their combat potential would remain limited.

Furthermore, The Life Spring eventually would dry up one day. What would the Musketeers do with their Giant Moose Horn Slingshots in the sky then?

The Fairy Dragon had yet to voice this lingering concern before the two Batmen to his side voiced theirs.

"You must be Lord Richard of Pigeon, right?" Marquis Capello asked loudly, his gaze oscillating between the scars on Eli’s arm and the tattoos on his chest, "May I ask, how would your aerial troops attack the enemy forces on the ground?"

Upon hearing this, Eli glanced surreptitiously at the two Batmen from Dorott.

The Prime Minister of Dorott Duchy, Marquis Capello, was a tall and hefty figure dressed in an old-fashioned cloak bearing intricate six-point magic circles embroidery, causing it to sway like tidal waves absent any wind. These indicated that it was a priceless piece of magical equipment.

There were a few deep folds on the Marquis’s forehead, and a pair of light-blue eyes under his thick eyebrows. His gaze was as sharp as a vulture in the sky, carrying both commanding dignity and acuteness.

When a gaze hidden behind gold-rimmed glasses was directed at him, the Marquis felt his heartbeat quicken.

Marquis Capello felt that gaze was as sharp as the flash of his sword when drawn from its sheath under the sunlight.

"Why do you ask?" Eli cocked his head, petting a bald Newton Giant Bird next to him. The bird pecked his finger affectionately on its own.

The equipment of this round of aerial knights caught a lot of attention. Historically, human aerial riders’ saddles were always designed to imitate horse saddles and bridles. Yet the saddles of the Pigeon aerial knights completely changed this tradition. The Newton saddles were all custom-made, being attached to the back of the Newton Giant Bird with several leather straps. The position for the rider’s legs was structured as sockets made from half body armor. This sort of equipment guaranteed that no matter how much they jostled, musketeer riders would not fall off from high altitudes. There were also two large bamboo baskets filled with green leaves and bamboo shoots on the back of each saddle. Moreover, the Newton Giant Bird was entirely covered in golden vine armor, especially the relatively softer abdomen, which was doubly protected with meticulously gilded vine armor.
