Chapter 355: Chapter 77 Fire! Fire! Fire!_1
"Don’t get entangled! Retreat! Retreat!" Captain Jennifer frantically waved her arms, trying to make all the mercenaries on the stairway retreat to give space to the archers loaded with armor-piercing heavy arrows.
Having had the first encounter experience, the mercenaries panicked this time, but under the leadership of several team leaders, they managed to hold their ground and were not scattered after one blow like before.
Out of fear of the lethality and wild desperate charge of Piegel and the Orephin warriors, a team of wyvern spearmen cooperatively raised a massive iron spear, creating a dense forest of steel with their shields and seven-blade-long weapons. It was the right thing to do. The closely-packed spear forest, even capable of resisting heavy cavalry at a gallop, let alone the head-buried wild swings of the Beamon infantry, not only blocked the downhill mouth of the staircase passage but also allowed the archers to calmly execute cover attacks while focusing on using armor-piercing heavy arrows that weigh up to five ounces. The battle was decided then and there.
Just as the wyvern spear infantry blocked the downhill exit, they pushed the long spear infantry guarding the "Birdwing Crossbow Car" in the middle of the stairs into an irreversible abyss. When the Piegel, who had rehooked the Ancient Power Firegun onto his back, swung his Wolf Fang Club, four or five mercenaries on the stairs were intimidated by his might and turned to flee in a panic, running headlong into the platoon of spears and getting skewered.
The "Metal Rose" mercenary corps did not originally have Wyvern heavy infantry. During their rearmament at the Shalba family’s weapon shop, the spear infantry squadron leader admired this kind of seven-bladed heavy spear with a tower spearhead, and took ten of them. He did not expect it to be used so soon.
This battle was a hit to their pride. Advanced weapons intended to counter heavy cavalry were now being used against infantry. The flexible-minded spear infantry squadron leader was full of emotions.
True battle-hardened, sharp-minded veterans that they were, as soon as the spear formation was set up, countless sharpened bamboo joints filled the gaps in the formation, making it dense like a phoenix tail and lush as green onions. These were the members of the slave-catching squads under Count Totti.
The long spear infantry guarding the Birdwing Crossbow Car on the stairway passage suffered from bad luck. Ordinary long spears were simply unable to resist against the weapons of the Beamons. Whether in terms of flexibility or length, the long swords of the Mammoth brutes were far superior than what the mercenaries had. As for that Piegel who charged the fastest, he was nothing short of a nightmare within a nightmare.
With no way forward or retreat, the spear infantry once again found themselves in a dire predicament similar to the very first wave of attacking ladders. The leading Piegel feared no spear stabs – for each stab at him, he retaliated with a clubbing. His club, against his armor, was like a toothpick against an iron wall, yet it crushed everything in its path. The infantry wished fervently they had a city wall to fight him with. Those Orephin warriors behind him were even more terrifying. During close combat, they could stab a mercenary in the belly with a blade and keep pushing onwards through a row of them.
The infantry still had square formations, but as they fought on, the formations disappeared. They were simply taking hits from the onslaught.
The Beamons’ attack strategy was not high-level or tactical. It was the simplest form of assault possible, devoid of any sophistication. Yet it unnerved the experienced mercenary veterans who suffered two major losses. They knew how to defend but just couldn’t despite knowing. Their intelligence was stunned by this ruthless, brutal style of combat.
Spear infantry were not good at close-quarters combat. Technically, the Great Swordsmen who were supposed to protect them in the rear should be stepping up at this point. But the narrow passage was already congested with bodies flying up into the air from heavy blows, some tumbling down in a gruesome spectacle. At times, a mercenary would be yelling out in pain and then a rapidly flashing blade would slash through their body, continuing its lethal path towards another mercenary’s forehead. It couldn’t be called a battle anymore. It was a massacre.
Captain Jennifer, mounted on her horse, bellowed chaotic orders for a long time. Even she didn’t know what she was saying. The only thing that was clear was that her mind was a swirling mess.
Seeing the exit of the stairway blocked by the dense forest-like spear formation and watching the Beamons ferociously attacking areas where there were many people, a few valiant Great Swordsmen attempted to counterattack but ended up being cut down. The Beamons seemed to have gotten used to the killing, and with Piegel leading them with his dreadful Wolf Fang Club in the confined space, blocking every possible attack angle and knocking down several men with each swing, the heavy swords in their hands, along with their wielders, were often sent flying by the thousand-pound Wolf Fang Club. Shards of broken steel were scattered everywhere.
What was even more annoying was that even if a Great Swordsman was skilled, brave enough to face the Orephin warrior’s steel blade, they would often be cut in half along with their heavy swords. This kind of psychological pressure was simply too tormenting.
In response to the urgent demand of the captain, the archer brigade began indiscriminate suppression fire. A close-range fire at such a distance would inevitably lead to friendly casualties as people on the stairs were moving about. Under the command of the team leader, the archers fired a volley. A densely packed group of arrows covered the fighting crowd on the stairway like a dark cloud. Screams rang out one after another.
