Chapter 354: Chapter 76: When Antiques Meet Antiques_4
A birdwing crossbow car, forged in bronze, was pulled out by four or five muscular men, rid of its felt cover, its bronze wheels emitting a harsh grinding noise as they left deep tracks in the ground. At the entrance of the stairway, the ancient elven weapon was pushed into position, attracting the undivided attention of two widely read mages.
True to the style of elven craftsmanship, the crossbow car was aesthetically appealing, its front end bearing the image of a deer’s head, mouth wide and flat. Behind it, two angled bronze wings were carved with intricate glyphs. In the middle of the deer-bodied carriage was a triangular groove where shafts of the bow, donning iron gauntlets, placed a serrated crescent blade the size of a tabletop, acquired from a trailer. Two of the burly men then forcefully shoved the wings together, locking it onto the lever behind the crossbow.
The existence of this birdwing crossbow car cast a gloomy light onto the faces of the two captains of the Heavy Scythe-wielder infantry in the Tornado Mercenary Group. According to myths, when the crossbow was built in ancient times, it was blessed by elven mages well versed in wind magic with a permanent whirlwind technique. The launched crescent blade would spin along a linear path, slicing through the targeted area with terrifying force. Moreover, the crossbow’s cone is made of three hundred prehistoric giant lice’s leg tendons. If this enormous serrated crescent blade were to be launched within a hundred yards, it would spell disaster for the slow-moving heavy infantry. During the era of the gods and demigods, such formidable weapons were used to combat the ’Overlord’ of the Demon Clan, whose spikes were harder than granite. So making short work of heavy infantry battle armors would be no trouble.
In possession of such a weapon, the Metal Rose, being competitive in nature, managed to break a cold sweat on the brow of the two captains of the Heavy Scythe-wielders in the Tornado Mercenary Group.
The Fairy Dragon overhead also had a great fright. If not for the probe units left behind, this birdwing crossbow car would undoubtedly devastate any Fairencui warriors lying in ambush on the beach. Whether another antediluvian weapon like this could even be found on the continent was questionable.
The birdwing crossbow car was pushed onto the stairway passage, flanked by rows of mercenaries carrying spears who eagerly shielded the crossbow. The archers in the rear ranks also switched to heavier arrows, their bowstrings taut, ready to fire at the dark entrance of the cave.
The crossbowmen adjusted their stance for a test fire on an elevated angle, pulling down the bronze lever behind the car. A resounding "clack" rumbled from the elegant wings, and they spread open, emitting a blinding flash of silver from the bronze deer’s mouth. Accompanied by a buzzing scream, the rapidly spinning crescent blade soared across the entrance of the cave, gouging a deep trench along its path. Red mud fell in an unbroken line from the high slope, and in the end, the blade hit on the stone statue on the left of the cave. Sparks flew, with stone dust scattered in the terrifying clatter. When the dust settled, more than half of the enormous crescent blade was lodged into the stone statue, continuing to spin for another two or three heartbeats before coming to a complete stop.
The crossbowmen readjusted the direction of the birdwing crossbow car, shifting the deer’s mouth slightly to the right. The shaft of the bow loaded another giant crescent blade into the firing groove.
If the next shot entered the cave, no matter how brave the warriors inside, they would be no match for the high-speed rotating blade.
A triumphant smile swept across Captain Jennifer’s face. She absolutely despised these Beamons.
Shiven Liu, standing not far from the entrance of the cave, was also taken aback. He’d just glanced at the emerging crossbow car and seen its power, breaking out in a cold sweat. Had that crescent blade unluckily hit the cave just then, even with his three layers of heavy armor, he would have been a goner. Wasting no time, Old Liu quickly dropped his tiger-head hook and, swift as the wind, swept out of the cave. This time, he once again left the surrounding humans in awe.
A loud "bang" was heard. Under the careful guard of the spear-wielding mercenaries, a shaft of the bow, who was operating the birdwing crossbow car with smug satisfaction, had a blood flower explode from his forehead. He was thrown into the air and landed heavily in the crowd, scattering copper shrapnels around him and causing collateral damage.
Many humans stood aghast, their gaze transfixed on the Bronze Firegun in Piegel’s hand, who was now kneeling on the ground.
The two mages quickly cast a Flame Shield on themselves and Count Totti picked up his harp-shaped battle shield. Numerous infantrymen, holding shields, gathered around the three key figures to protect them, while Jennifer, the captain of the Metal Rose Mercenary Group, stood dumbfounded.
"An Ancient Power Firegun?" Jennifer grunted these four scorching words.
"Grab it for me!" The mercenary group’s leader roared out another order in a shrill, vituperative tone.
Intriguingly, as if by coincidence, Shiven Liu simultaneously bellowed out similar words in a manner akin to the female mercenary group leader.
"This crossbow car is mine!" The weapon-collecting fanatic Liu Shiven almost screeched as he drew the dense formation from behind and charged into the crowd, and even initiating a self-triggered berserk state.
The archers stood stunned as the Beamon warrior once again rushed from the cave into the dense crowd, fearing friendly fire.
The Fairy Dragon moaned in the high heavens.
The direction of the battle has completely escaped her control.

Since I’ve written quite a bit about powerful races, their involvement in small-scale warfare is a must. Otherwise, why would I write about these powerful races?
