Chapter 1217: Chapter 330: Fight Like a Gentleman_2
"Play the music!" Seeing a slight disturbance in his own formation, Rommel raised his right hand, and the herald beside him immediately sounded a series of short, rhythmic calls on a conch.
"Clang clang clang... Clang clang clang..."
After a surge of vigorous string strumming, a thousand desert musicians from behind the fortifications simultaneously played the grand paqin melody "Moon Submerged in the Half River"!
Amidst the resonant and powerful paqin strings, an overwhelming aura of iron horses and golden jingling, flashing swords and shadows, and the atmosphere of killing assailed the senses!
The urgent strings, the mournful tremors, at times they sounded like angry hooves rushing forward! At times, like an avalanche coming down! At times, like one’s heartstrings being wrenched apart!
Under the half-moon and above the prismatic waves, amidst the ruins, the fragmented corpses bled silently, with occasional pinging splashes; siege, slaughter, gunpowder smoke, and flames of war unfurled slowly from the music of a thousand desert musicians’ paqins, like a vivid scroll painting.
The music of the paqin shifted and turned, morphing into the soul-stirring homeland with its floral fragrances and bird songs; it became the advising of a kind mother, and the laughter of a wife and children! These two utterly different paqin sounds alternated over the battlefield, gradually becoming more mournful and heartbreaking, representing the tearful eyes full of wrinkles of mothers! The desperate crying of wives and children! And the desolate sway of the withered grass on the barren tombs!
And that desolate sigh seemingly welling up from the bottom of one’s heart!
This was a scene that could be felt just by listening with one’s ears! This terrifying, paqin sound!
Two hundred Bimon warriors were stunned on the spot, as the trickling stream-like paqin music inadvertently evoked the deep-seated emotions buried in their hearts, irresistibly reminding them of their distant homesickness, their families waiting at the door for their return, the agonizing screams of their dying comrades, the memories of their homeland’s Xiang Pa, and that beautiful girl under the gentle moonlight...
These reflections and illusions, which are not supposed to belong to warriors on the battlefield, bubbled up uncontrollably from their hard, stone-like hearts—one couldn’t help but to feel it, and the taste was truly bitter and astringent!
Crowds of Bimon priests and warriors stood atop the city wall, the air filled with a heavy, frozen silence, only broken by the music of the passing paqin, only the sorrowfulness and heartache silently painted on the Bimon warriors’ faces to be seen.
On the handsome and sharply contoured face of the commander, a faint smile finally emerged.
The desert musicians were not only skilled archers, but also the most enchanting desert musicians—each one a natural-born master of the paqin!
In his early years, when Rommel conquered Yasha King City, he simply played the grand paqin music "Surrounded on All Sides" with a thousand musicians and completely demoralized the elite troops defending the city.
The city, which they could not take after three months of assault, fell into his hands in just three hours, thanks to the boundless rendering of the paqin’s pessimism and despair, which resonated with the Yashans.
Music is a language without borders! Music is a dagger that stabs into the deepest part of the soul! The emotions conveyed by music can be contagious!
The curved saber of Mulan can only destroy the body, but the paqin of the musicians is a weapon that stirs emotions, and this is something Rommel firmly believed in. He had used it countless times, each to unimaginable effect!
Today was no different; the remnant Bimon army was completely surrounded, fighting far from their homeland, with heavy casualties among their comrades. They are, after all, a Wisdom Race with feelings, longing for home, and just as likely to grow weary of war. The grand paqin melody "Moon Submerged in the Half River" couldn’t be more suitable!
To grind away the Bimon warriors’ fervent emotions towards war and killing, only music could achieve this feat. Otherwise, even if they were reduced to ashes, they would still perish on the wind with a warrior’s pride!
"Yes, just like now! Use the sound of the harp to bring out their pessimistic emotions! Genuine emotion cannot be suppressed even by the strictest military discipline!" Rommel growled internally. Under such circumstances, the opponent’s officers would usually try to repress it, but the harder they repressed, the more morale would collapse.
"Damn it! Playing psychological warfare!" Shaman of Divine Songs, shaking with anger, held a skull necklace in his hand and clutched an unlit cigar in his mouth as he strode out from within the city, his entourage of stunning beauties making him shine like a dazzling sun among stars.
Rommel had agreed with him that neither side would use Mages, but this bastard actually started using music! He was utterly frustrated; he had experienced this tactic on the battlefields of the Southern Border long ago, so how come he never thought to use it himself? Instead, this fox had such a brilliant mind! God damn!
He stopped and stared at Rommel from a distance. The bastard was wearing a red commander’s cloak today, standing next to a six-tusked silver elephant, looking as cool as a rhino.
Rommel crossed his arms, leisurely observing the Shaman of Divine Songs across from him, taking delight in his undisguised anxiety. He had seen such expressions on the faces of many enemy commanders before, but this time, it was particularly satisfying.
The music of the Bimon priests started up haphazardly, but because of the gentleman’s agreement, they couldn’t use the "Light of Sobriety" from the "Spirit Communion Song" to bolster the warriors. With just over a hundred priests’ disorganized music, how could it cover the ensemble of a thousand on the other side?
"I want to see what else you’ve got up your sleeve, Shaman of Divine Songs," said the brigade commander with a provocative smile, placing his finger against his forehead in a mock salute to the distant Shaman of Divine Songs.
The Bimon’s Shaman of Divine Songs didn’t disappoint him, immediately turning to whisper something to the small Magical Beast sitting on his shoulder. This plump yet adorable little creature blinked its large eyes and fumbled around in its leopard-print pouch before pulling out a shiny object to give to the Shaman.
Rommel watched with interest, tilting his head; he was keen to see what the man was up to.
With a spit, Shaman of Divine Songs wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and glared fiercely at Rommel, channeling a surge of Blood Magic power into the Div Crystal card.
A red barrier instantly unfolded in front of both armies.
The massive barrier, like a giant mirror, displayed with stunning clarity an explosively curvy Mulan Lioness and fire-eyed creature, their performance suddenly revealed in front of every person on the battlefield.
Eyes popped and bounced all over the ground.
The size of the barrier projected by the Div Crystal card and the volume of the sound followed the Magic Power input by the Mage. The Magic Crystals embedded in the card contained Magical Elements, activated by Shaman of Divine Songs, Saint Chiao’s most explosively magical individual, completely drowning out all the harpsichord sounds on the battlefield.
In that moment, a thousand desert beauties collectively hit a sour note as if a rhino had plucked a harp string with its toe, "Grating, clanging," a chorus of harpsichords crashing to the ground followed.
The Mulan soldiers stared in shock; the Lioness was part of the inner palace guard in the Mulan Empire, and while many Mulanese knew of their existence, very few had ever seen such a spectacle.
Especially on the battlefield.
Rommel blacked out for a moment, nearly toppling to the ground.
"Damn it! That’s for playing psychological warfare with me, you bastard!" Shaman of Divine Songs could hardly contain his crooked smile.
