Chapter 1040: Chapter 264: Impressions of Cambridge
After solving a series of troubling issues, Liu Zhenhan led his followers and met up with the expeditionary sacrificial group, worshiped the god of war Kampas at the Main Temple, and officially embarked on the desert journey.
The Bimon Royal City was located at the northwest corner of the Donau Wasteland; from an aerial view, the dense wild grass of the Donau Wasteland stretched to Sabak. If it continued northward, it would turn into a barren wasteland, where the land was so infertile that not only was livestock farming untenable, but even the most basic residential requirements could not be met. Thus, the further north the sacrificial group traveled, the fewer people they encountered; apart from the yellow-brown sandy surface, low shrubs and jujube bushes, bleached white deadwood, and carcasses of wild animals were the only sovereigns of this vast wilderness.
After about fifteen days of trekking, the days without greenery brightened the eyes of the sacrificers as they finally arrived at the Cambridge Oasis. Having had their fill of sand and wind along the way, the sacrificers finally breathed a sigh of relief. On this journey, the chief Shaman had almost taken a whip to their backs to hurry them along; the younger sacrificers were ok, but the older ones almost had their old bones dislodged by the army-issued wagons.
Seeing a row of wagons appear in the distance, a melancholy and ancient horn sounded from the towers of the Cambridge Oasis, and a troop of about a hundred Bimon Cavalry burst out of the city gate, whipping their mounts and kicking up a cloud of dust as they sped towards the caravan of sacrificers.
Chief Shaman Liu Zhenhan removed the bandit-like cloth from his face, jumped down from the wagon, and while slapping the dust off the cloth, he called for all the sacrificers and followers to gather.
"Damn it! Stop dawdling!" Liu Zhenhan shouted at the chaotic formation of sacrificers, fully assuming the pose of a chief Shaman.
"Line up! Fuck!" A militia of Teal Jade barked intimidatingly as he harangued about two hundred followers of the sacrificers.
Liu Zhenhan helped Helen, Moer, Joan of Arc, and Qian Qian down from the wagon, then pulled out his horseshoe-shaped liquor flask, unscrewed the cap and gulped down a big mouthful of Rum, even offering a sip to Guoguo perched on his shoulder. He gargled it in his mouth and spat it out sharply, "Ptui", spewing the alcohol-soaked liquid onto the cracked sandy soil in front of him, instantly drawing numerous envious gazes with the rich aroma of the liquor.
"What a beautiful oasis! The desert is truly magnificent!" Helen, pointing at the oasis framed by the vast sea of sand, opened her arms wide with a cheery laugh. This place was going to be where she would pass on her teachings, a completely different natural environment from Teal Jade, filling Helen with freshness and curiosity.
"If you stay too long, it feels pretty ordinary," Qian Qian smiled. Since obtaining the Seven-Stringed Pearl Lyre, the young girl had gradually become less reserved, although what followed was her growing dependency on Liu Zhenhan, just like a little Nun, turning into the Lord’s constant companion.
"It is pretty beautiful, I need to take a picture," as Moer spoke, Nun Joan of Arc’s eyes lit up, so the two of them took out their Div Water Crystal Balls and started capturing photos in different directions.
Liu Zhenhan adjusted his porcupine skin crown and, together with everyone else, immersed himself in this scenery never experienced before.
The immense expanse of the Taklamago Desert, like an ancient beast, silently lay in wait on this land where civilization and barbarism intersect, where death and life overlapped, making the boundaries between heaven and earth appear even more mysteriously distant here. Donau Wasteland here officially ended, stretching from west to east, with low-growing cacti, sandworms, and Euphorbiaceae creating a sharp, distinct boundary between the desert and the land.
Unlike others who were busy admiring the scenery, moved by a warrior’s instinct, Liu Zhenhan also didn’t forget to take out the leather map distributed by the military department and compared it to the terrain here.
According to the terrain marked on the military’s map, because both the direct west and north sides of the Bimon Kingdom border the ocean, and the source of the Taklamago Desert is exactly nestled between these two long stretches of coast, from hundreds of miles from west to north, the desert resembled a huge pear, with the narrow end of the pear stemming right at the Cambridge Oasis.
The reason why Bimon Kingdom’s last border garrison was located here and not extended further into the desert could be clearly seen from the map. If extended northward, after the desert turned two bends, it would suddenly open up, presenting a much larger expanse, several times broader than what was currently in view-----establishing enough garrisons in such a vast desert would not only be undefendable but also the massive logistical support and personnel required was beyond the capabilities of the weak Bimon Kingdom.
In Liu Zhenhan’s view, this Taklamago Desert could not only be considered the border of Bimon but also the northwestern frontier of the Aegean Continent—this area controlled by the Cambridge Oasis was precisely the northwest corner of the Aegean Continent.
Although, theoretically, the Taklamago Desert was not disconnected from the entire continent, intelligent life in the desert had always had minimal interactions with the rest of the continent’s Bimon and humans, except for a very few commercial exchanges. The outside world knew almost nothing about the intelligent life, national composition, etc., living in the vast desert, treating this vast desert as another unknown new continent wasn’t really an overstatement.
