Blood Nemesis -
Chapter 186: Bet
Chapter 186: Bet
"You seem to be sure that the future of my guild is bleak," Yuna said slowly.
"Sure is a strong word. But I don’t deny that the chances are high." Oliver commented.
"With the way your guild is changing, inner turmoil will be just as big a factor as the demons."
Oliver could not say he had seen and experienced the future, so he blamed everything on chance.
"The current guild leader, Kim Jihun, your uncle, is the pillar stabilising the guild. What do you think will happen once someone else takes over the position? Would Nova Rift be the same guild it used to be?"
"And who do you think will become the next guild leader?"
"There are a total of 4 S-rankers in the guild. Two of them are solitary individuals from the older generation who don’t interfere with the guild. But that doesn’t mean they will remain like that forever."
"The remaining are the guild leader and the weakest S-ranker in your guild."
"You might think that the weakest guy will cause the least problem. But that’s just your wishful thinking. I heard he has aligned himself with the other founder’s family."
"Then there is Indra, someone who is destined to become the S ranker who is also from the other founding family."
"The balance of power is shifting. Something will inevitably happen."
Oliver smiled.
"I am waiting for the right time to recruit you." He winked at her.
Yuna turned her head, shyly.
"You seem to have thought a lot about it." She said,
"Yes. Contrary to how I look, I am a deep thinker." Oliver said, not hiding his smug smirk. "Because of that, I also believe you would be a great addition to my guild."
"The Nemesis Guild?"
"Oh! You remember the name. It seems like you are interested."
Yuna immediately shook her head.
"I am not,"
From her perspective, what Oliver said was just speculation. She didn’t take him seriously at all.
There were deeper things at play in the case of her guild than what Oliver could know. So, she believed he was not qualified to make an informed decision.
"Ace Recruiter, don’t reject me outright. You know, I am about to get rich. I can pay you a good salary."
"Still not interested."
"Why?"
"I don’t think anything you said will happen. Simply put, I don’t believe you."
"That’s sad." Oliver with pity. "If you believe me. You could change the fate of your guild."
Yuna could feel the pity he had for her.
’Does he really believe that?’
Yuna was an empath. She could sense it more clearly than anyone else. And Oliver was not trying to hide it this time with convoluted thoughts.
’Would something bad happen?’ She asked herself while stealthily glancing at him.
"Then, let’s do something slightly different. You said you don’t believe me, right?" Oliver asked.
"Yes."
"Then, let me give you a reason to believe me."
"A reason?" Yuna was slightly interested. "What reason?" She asked.
"Within a year, one of the S-rankers of your guild will meet with misfortune. The one targeting him would be someone from your guild. If that happens, let’s work together. What do you think?"
Oliver raised a corner of his brow and asked.
Yuna squinted her eyes in doubt.
"Are you a fortune teller, seer or an oracle?" She asked.
"None of the above."
"Do you have some special information channel, then?"
"No. I don’t. This is a gamble. I desperately want to recruit you and have decided to take a chance. You can ask for something in return if you agree. Are you up for it?"
Yuna thought for a few seconds.
From what she knew, something happening to the S-ranker of her guild is the most unlikely event.
Still, she wished to verify by asking what he meant by ’misfortune’.
"Before I agree on anything, can you clarify what the misfortune you are talking about is? I don’t want to be scammed."
"You’re smart," Oliver said and paused to think. Then he took sweet time to reply.
"Any kind of personal injury that will significantly decrease the S-ranker’s combat power can be thought of as a misfortune."
"What do you mean by significant?"
"You won’t let me get away with it, right?" Oliver smiled.
"..."
"Anyway, think of it as a critical injury that could kill him if left untreated. What do you think, now?"
Yuna nodded.
Most of the S-rankers of the guild travel to the second earth periodically to raid ancient ruins and secure natural resources like the mana stone mine.
Injuries would happen at that time.
But the chances of critical, life-threatening injuries happening to an S-ranker are unlikely.
No one is stupid enough to take that kind of risk in this day and age.
From looking at the past, the only times when S-rankers were critically injured were when S-ranked gate breaks occurred on Earth.
Unless an S-ranked gate doesn’t open in the Federation, the chances of her guild’s S-rankers being injured are even less.
Could Oliver predict where the gate would open?
Yuna didn’t believe so.
Even an oracle can’t do that a year early. Most of the seers and oracles could only see critical events that would happen a month early. There were other conditions attached to their vision that were not disclosed to the public.
So, even the ability to see the future was not perfect.
Therefore, the chances of Oliver knowing the future are low, even with the help of a seer-type ability user.
The cards were stacked in her favour.
She glanced at Oliver once more.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" She asked.
"Of course. I never go back on my words." Oliver lied without batting an eyelid.
"I heard you partially own WorldNet." Yuna probed.
"Yes. Nova Rift knows about that! You looked into my information?"
"Hm...we came across this information recently. I heard a contract for military communication was signed yesterday."
"That’s right." Oliver didn’t hide it.
The information was going to become public soon. He had no reason to hide it.
"If I win, I want you to help me secure a contract for WorldNet access. What do you think?"
"Hm...seems like a reasonable request."
Oliver was willing to accept it.
"Even if you didn’t win, I will help you secure one. After all, I partially own WorldNet."
"Hm?!"
His declaration surprised Yuna.
"Then, could you help me get a contract, now?"
"Not now, a year later." Oliver corrected himself.
"Hm...okay."
"So, you agree to the conditions. You will join my guild when you lose?"
"If I lose." Yuna corrected.
"Same, same." Oliver waved his hand.
Oliver was thrilled when she agreed. A new member was about to be added to his team a few months later. That, too, is the ace recruiter of Nova Rift.
With her at the helm of guild administration, a large chunk of his problems could be solved.
In the future, he will also be able to recruit a lot of talent to shape his guild into a superpower.
’The money problem is solved because of WorldNet. The manpower problem could be solved with Yuna. Root can take care of any technical and strategic issues.’
His dream team was slowly forming.
’If I can recruit Kai, all security issues can be solved.’
’In this life, if I saved Dharma from the tragedy, he might not work for me. But that’s okay.’
’I will give him the choice.’
’Tox would work with me if I could give her a proper salary and a good working environment. I should recruit her after I get the money.’
Oliver noted down in his mind, pleased by what he had just done.
Recruiting Yuna was a done deal. It was a matter of time. He just had to wait for the misfortune to fall upon them.
After agreeing to the bet, they stayed silent for the entire journey.
The car took a winding path around the mountain and finally reached the midway point.
Soon, a majestic gate opened before them. The gate was tall, broad and had sturdy walls all around it.
Oliver gazed at it in contempt.
The people here lived like kings while a portion of the population struggled to survive.
As a former villain, the thought of destroying it all flickered through his mind. As usual, he gauged the weakness, counted the guards and memorised the security system’s structure, thinking about the possibility of breaking it.
While doing so, he also saw ten Mechs standing near the gate.
These mechs were upgraded and customised versions of the standard Trinity Tech ones.
Oliver roughly estimated that it would have cost them about three to four billion.
’If they put ten near the front door, they would have more hidden somewhere inside.’
"Your family is not shy of displaying their wealth," Oliver commented.
Yuna nodded.
"You don’t need a salary once you join my guild to survive, right?"
She nodded again.
"Well, princess Yuna, sorry for disrespecting you earlier."
Oliver made an exaggerated expression while he asked for her forgiveness.
Yuna panicked a little.
"You don’t have to do that." She promptly said and widened the gap between them.
Oliver wiped his expression clean and said, "My brother is both lucky and unlucky." He commented as the car drove to the large, expansive mansion before them.
Yuna heard him, but didn’t say anything.
Oliver was correct about what he just said.
If his brother could join the family, he would become one of the most fortunate people alive. With the Kim family’s power, a son-in-law would be treated well everywhere...
...everywhere except in the family.
Without the family backing, he would certainly not receive the respect of her family.
Kim Yuna knew it. Her father was someone like that.
