Chapter 96: House Sherman

OWEN

~

I let myself be consumed by the numerous chirping sounds of the roving birds around the garden, it was very regular here, more like a daily ritual, most of the families’ households are located within the forest or fast from other sights, due to what we do and what we’re capable of, the ’HEAD’ family to be exact are the ones who stay secluded while the branch families stay within the towns.

Even though I let myself be consumed by the singing birds I kept my undying focus on the Grimoire before me, exams were finally done which means I get to relinquish myself with spells, I love focusing my attention on books, it was part of the reason I was Sherman, I not only come from the family line of witches and warlock but we were also the studious type, books were like our second nature and as obliged I have taken that attribute.

My amber eyes glanced to the soil before me, this was a tricky one, one I have been trying to master for some time now, I really need to work on my nature. Even as a warlock to cast spells and curses, there was also each individual born with accustomed elements. I was born with the element of earth, which means anything belonging to the soil was under my control, well I am not a master yet, let’s just say a few of it for now.

I’m a guy who had a dream to surpass my predecessors one day, to be a master of my very element and also be recognized for my abilities, but first I must survive high school.

I was brought up to be a responsible type and I knew solely because I was the Heir of the Sherman house, a big deal and also exhausting. I shook my head, closing my eyes with a clear throat. Yes, I need deep engagement for this because this was my first time working with plants.

I mumbled the spells I surmised from the Grimoire in chant, it was a foreign language that sounded Latin, I made sure I pronounced the words right, that was a very crucial fact Vanessa taught me, the pronunciation was everything, it was what gave power to any spell you were to cast or learn, which is why I made sure I learned other languages, yet another crucial thing for my family.

I opened my eyes, checking to see if my spell worked but I was met with soil. Ha, fuck it! 5 tries and still the same result, why were plants the hardest to control?

I slammed the book shut, I really need to work on my pronunciation, maybe that was what I didn’t get right.

"Owen!" I twirled at the call of my name, Miles approached me.

I sighed, rising to my feet and dusting my pants.

"What?"

"Did you hear?"

"Hear what"

He took a moment before he spoke. "The Devereaux will no longer attend Juneau high"

~

"Why did you think they stopped?" Miles asked, seeming confused himself.

"Simple, maybe the Alpha found out about Dace’s unnatural attachment to Emma"

"Oh someone is pleased by this," Miles teased.

"Look" I came to a stop and he did too. "This is the best and most for Emma, we both know this attachment wasn’t gonna last long" I stated, believe I was more than pleased by this, I never wrapped my head around the fact of why a werelion would take interest in a human, it still bugged the rest of us, because we all caught a whiff of something about them, about werelions having a female or something, there were so many things we didn’t understand about them yet.

"Oh Vanessa"

I twirled as Vanessa walked toward us.

"Here early?" I asked.

"Yes," she said in a dim tone. "I think it’s high time we held some meeting, the head family needs to know about the happenings for the past few months now"

She was right, already we called for a meeting many times, but we haven’t really had one, the head family was yet to know about the barrier and the intruder.

"Shall we?" She walked ahead.

"Sure," I said watching as Miles walked in an opposite direction, surely going to cause some mischief or spread the news about the household.

We both made a turn to the hallway next to the garden.

"How’s Emma?"

She smiled. "You should call her"

"Well she’s not picking"

She sighed deeply. "I thought as much" her tone was shifty.

"Why is something wrong?" I asked, suddenly feeling worried.

"Just a teenager living through her first breakup, I do not know if I should call it that," she shook her head like she was trying to make sense of it. "I saw her last night watching TV and stuffing her mouth with ice cream"

"Oh"

"Yeah, I guess the news of the Devereaux hurt her more than I expected" her thoughts seemed to have wandered, she always does that, something Emma took from her.

"But it’s a good thing" I faced ahead but I noticed her gaze on me. "They were harmful to her"

"I don’t think Dace was"

I snapped my back to her, and my eyes narrowed for some explanation, when has not being with Dace harmful to her? I mean she was attacked, she dated him and because of Sarah’s fantasy attachment to Dace, she saw Emma as an obstacle and crossed the line. If she hadn’t known Dace none of this would have happened, what other to see it and not this?

"I mean when she came here, it was hard to get her to open up to me, to feel comfortable and accept this place, I heard from my sis that Emma was shut in type like a per-warning in case I felt offended by it. The kind of girl who felt indifference to the world" she locked gazes with me, a small smile on her lips.

"It’s funny because when she met a certain Devereaux, the little snail was slowly crawling out of her shell"
