BLOOD LEGACIES
Chapter 495: Unfriendly Talk

Chapter 495: Unfriendly Talk

"We’re not having a friendly conservation here" I said sternly, the anger in my voice rising. I don’t know what his aim is but it sure as hell wasn’t working. There was nothing friendly going on here, we were just two strangers in a room. One who had a death wish and another who is consumed by anger and pain.

Put these two that in a room, and you might not like the result.

"I know," he said and then his eyes turned wistful. "I just thought I should lighten the mood a bit. After all, it has been nothing but intense staring for the past hour"

Just an hour? I thought it was a whole day already.

I cleared my throat. "You care for Hayden?" I asked, confused about why I needed to hear it from him. Just my curious mind wandering again. Maybe I just needed clarity too.

"I do," he nodded, finally agreeing with himself. I didn’t welcome the idea at first, and she’s not fond of me, either. According to her, her friend Death said I shouldn’t be trusted." He chuckled like he could picture the conservation all over again.

I gulped as suddenly a reminisce of a dream I had weeks ago found me, a dark entity around Hayden as she inaudibly screamed at me, was that death? I couldn’t see it properly, just a shadow cloak in the shape of something.

"That behavior from her suddenly made me want to gain her trust. You know the feeling..." he said to me but I didn’t reply. He sighed. "Everyone hates me for what I did"

"We’re now speaking the same language" I mused.

"Regret, decisions, choosing, those were the things I grew up with Emma, what you and I had to face at a young age"

I felt pain tugging at my chest.

"I don’t regret breaking your bond with Dace, but I regret not protecting you better." He ran a hand through his hair, his maroon eyes coming back to me, revealing the emotions eating him from the inside out. He might as well just be me right now, in an internal toll with the mind, choosing, regretting, and deciding. It’s an endless torture. At this moment, I felt like we were kindred spirits of our own choices and desires.

"I loved you, Emma"

"Don’t..." I warned.

"Not enough to reach you," he said in a shifty tone. "But I loved you in my own way. I might not have seen it before but the way Dace looks at you..." he said as if he could picture it, sparing a look at Hayden and me. "That’s love"

I blinked. "Is Owen Sherman finally using his heart to speak instead of his brain?"

He chuckled as light as the wind. He tucked Hayden properly and then rose to his feet, placing his hand in his jacket pockets. "Maybe I learned your brain is what keeps you going in everything. I would one day become the leader of the clan. There were many things I had to see, obligations..."

"Hmm," I made a sound only.

"And I’m sorry for letting that get in the way of our friendship. That was the biggest mistake I ever made"

"Do you still think bloodlines don’t mix?" I voiced.

He paused at my question, probably not expecting it but then he looked at me, really looked at me, I think this was the first since our gaze had locked together, I’ve avoided it since, and now I made a mistake by not looking away.

A strange feeling swamped me, it felt like he was searching for my soul, for what could be seen beneath. I shifted uncomfortably on my seat and I quickly snapped my gaze away, taking a breather. I placed my hand on my chest to steady my pounding heartbeat, as loud as drums to my ears. My magic at my fingertips gave an invisible spark, an itching sensation that made them numb.

"Emma, are you—"

The doors opened and Singe stepped in. "Your times up, Alphas orders," he said with an apologetic face but I knew he wasn’t at all.

Owen gave a curt nod before glancing my way, his features contouring in confusion and disbelief for a fleeting moment. I felt it right there he wanted to say something but he didn’t choose not to say a word as he walked out of the room.

"Lioness?"

"Emma" I growled, earning a chuckle from Singe.

"Alpha will have my head, I want this fine piece to stay intact until I find my female"

I rolled my eyes at his response. "I might just beat him to it then"

"Are you staying longer?" he asked, sounding almost hopeful.

I spared a look at Hayden’s peaceful form before gulping. "No"

I held the wall as everything spun for a bit. "Whoa," I gasped as for a split second the entire house was upside down. Am I walking on the ceiling?!

"Easy," Singe held me before I hit the floor. "Are you alright?"

"Did everywhere just turn upside down?"

"What?!" he asked, confused.

"T-The ceiling was the floor and then vice versa" I explained, I practically seemed like I was losing my marbles now because the more I explained the more Singe looked at me weirdly.

"No. Are you sure you’re alright? I’ll drive you"

"No no, I’m fine" I pulled away from him.

"Please lioness, tell Alpha to take you if not me"

"No," I said with clenched teeth. "And don’t tell him about what happened"

He opened his mouth to further argue his point but I stopped him.

"We’re not really on the same line right now. You’re his Pride you should have sensed it"

He froze and then looked away.

"You feel it don’t you?" I urged.

He nodded but said nothing.

"He won’t let me in so I’ll leave" I walked away, he called to me but I didn’t stop.

Grayson didn’t seem to be here anymore, I didn’t see Emilia too which was perfect. As for Dace? I probably pushed him away enough.

This was perfect timing.
