BLOOD LEGACIES
Chapter 48: Truth

Chapter 48: Truth

I groaned, stirring awake, the sound of a beeping machine filled my ears, the hard smell of drugs covered my nose, how I hate that smell! I couldn’t feel any pain, I felt so light and relaxed but I couldn’t move my hand, I felt like a pillow was on it or something, but at least it didn’t hurt anymore.

My eyes leisurely opened, everything in my vision was blurry but I could tell someone was before me, who helped me put on my glasses.

"Hey sweetie"

"M-Mom?" my voice was hoarse. I could barely recognize it. "How-" I tried to speak again but then I gulped, my throat felt so dry.

"Easy okay," my mom said with a sweet smile. "Vanessa called me the moment you were hospitalized" she began before her sad eyes trailed my body. "You must have been so scared"

Does she know what truly happened? "It must have been so awful, really a bear attack? The mountains here have always been so safe and yet..." she sighed.

"What did you hear?" I asked in a low tone.

"The bear got you, and then you tried to run away but hurt yourself in the process, oh honey"

"W-Who told you that?"

Her eyes narrowed at me. "The school called Vanessa, isn’t that what happened?"

"Y-Yes," I said with a gulp.

"I came as fast as I could when I heard"

"Y-Your work"

"Honey I do not care about work okay? I’m just happy you’re okay, I panicked Emma"

"I know," I said on the verge of tears, my tone heavy, I could imagine how scared she was and had to take a quick flight here.

"It’s okay honey," she said, kissing me on my forehead and I closed my eyes feeling comfort from it. "The doctor said you’re gonna be okay, it must have been a hard fall but don’t worry you aren’t crippled"

I gave a chuckle.

"And your finger are set back too, at least you won’t be handicapped"

"Mom you’re supposed to be comforting me not scaring me" I mused.

"I know honey, I’m trying to cheer you up" she mused, stroking my cheeks with her thumb.

"I’m glad you’re here"

"I’m always here sweetie"

I nodded feeling a flush of warmth within me.

"I heard some guy from your school found you and brought you here"

I tensed, my heart slamming in my chest, I knew exactly who she was talking about.

"Well thank God for that person, I wish I knew his name. I could have at least called or something, oh now I remember, the nurses said his name was Dace or something" she rambled. "Is he a friend of yours?"

I was unable to stop the fast pace of my heartbeat, the images of what happened replaying in my head, his sabertooth, the murderous looks he had on and the growl.

Luckily the doors opened, and I was able to snap out of it. Vanessa walked in. "She’s awake," she said, rushing to my bed.

"Yes," my mom mused.

Seeing the both of them right now, it was impossible to tell the difference in their features, but their dress style did the work, it was like staring at one person with two personalities.

"Since you’re here I have some papers to fill for the blood transfuse"

"Of course, I’m here now"

"Thank you V" she faced me. "I will be right back okay?" I nodded, and she gave me a sweet smile before leaving.

The moment the door slammed shut, Vanessa settled on the chair next to my bed. "How are you?"

"Bear attack?"

She sighed like she expected me to ask. "What else would I tell her, that it wasn’t a bear attack but a vampire"

Okay was it just me or was Vanessa just blunt right there. Realizing what she just rambled, she slammed her forehead with her palm. "It’s too much to take in, I know"

"I want you to be honest with me..." I began. "Please... I deserve to know"

"I know," she nods. "But after-"

"Now, please"

She sighed heavily with a nod.

"Dace... he’s..." I gulped.

"One of the oldest creatures in the society, known as the werelions. Known for their pride, and distaste for humans and think of nothing but themselves. They are wild, vicious and no one can tame them, that is why they are at the top of the food chain"

I tried to take it all in but it was like I was slammed on the face with a bomb although I don’t know how that felt this was truly wild.

"They have been called many names over the centuries, Wildlings, Lycans, Skinwalkers, shapeshifters. The powerful family of beasts, the Devereaux’s. Very beautiful in their human forms, like angels but in their beast form, they are your worst nightmare. This isn’t too much is it? Maybe we shou-:"

"N-No" I cut her off. "After what I have seen.." I gulped. "It’s not, tell me everything"

"Okay just don’t get a headache"

Well, I already am, this wasn’t something someone would take in without having one, but I really need to know about everything, this was the time for the truth, the Law of Coexistence doesn’t apply here after what has happened, I was sure Vanessa thought the same way too.

"The Devereaux came here 2 hundred years ago from a far country searching for a home"

"What happened? Did they lose theirs?"

"I don’t know, they came here during your great great great grandparents, it wasn’t mentioned in the books"

"The book mentioned Juneau was built in 1880"

"Yes correct but that doesn’t mean this wasn’t a place then, the dates were just documented for book’s sake" she intoned. "The 4 families; Juneau’s, Adams, Shermans, and the Hathaways came together and made this town, but we were not at peace, chaos was riding with the vampires, their hunger was terrifying, we lost the Juneau’s to that, the first families"

My eyes trembled, the scene played in my head and it only made me more tense.

"We were outnumbered, on the verge of losing our home but then the Devereaux’s came"
