Chapter 468: Call Of The Banshee

A/N: Song For The Background ~ Snake Pit Poetry By Einar Selvik & Hilda Orvarsdottir

Even though it feels like a lost time is coming into my grasp once again. I still feel hollow, confused, and on the verge of losing everything. The very moment I open my mouth to say the very words I wanted to protect from him it will break him. The painful truth of my death and the reason I was stuck in my endless nightmare.

To be in this very situation was one I anticipated and one I wish not to be in. I knew it was childish of me to keep the truth from him, prolonging things and further confusing him and my affection for him was not the right call. I never wanted it to be this way, I could feel every tangle and knot of his swirling emotions. He’s breaking and driving towards a cliff I was leading him to.

But I am more scared of what it will entail when I finally take the pressure off my chest... what has always suffocated me. Was I really scared of telling the truth or was I scared of being blamed for everything that happened? The reason we were so cruelly broken apart from each other? Will Dace hate me for ruining his life and driving him to the point where he lost his very humanity, killed his father, and drove his mother towards madness?

What will become of us? What will become of everything? My mom always told me to take the right step toward a decision, that even though bad or good I should lead towards it not a narrow path. She supported my decision even then when I said I wanted to remain in Juneau after all the danger signs.

"You want the truth?" I sighed in a shaky breath, closing my eyes as I swayed my head slowly. My ears are ringing and my heart is thumping in my chest. I opened my eyes and glanced back at him. They spoke to me in several unsaid words and I knew it all. He thinks I hated him and that I felt he wasn’t worthy of my love so I broke our bond. But it was the total opposite.

I am the one not worthy of your love Dace Devereaux.

"You-"

Something suddenly consumed me and I don’t know what, it was very familiar as the inexplicable aura caressed my skin. It became cold and chilly and it was a serious case of deja vu as I looked out the window. The dark woods, the trees, rocking from the calm wind... I could feel something approaching but I don’t know what. It comes like the wrath of plague, driving and pushing, forcing its very way through. Making the hairs in my body stand in alert as goosebumps caress me.

Dace was the first to move and I followed. Could he feel it too? Whatever aura it was coming from the entrance. It loomed heavily, making the air and pressure tight, and unbreathable. This wasn’t Dace’s aura, this was something else entirely. And it’s coming or it’s already here.

We came out of the suite and headed downstairs to the foyer that led to the entrance of the mansion. Singe was already there as well as Grayson and Emilia, standing and glancing at the door like something was about to burst through it any moment, all on high alert. Do they all feel it? And where have I had this murky feeling before? It feels so familiar but my brain was unable to process it.

"Singe" Dace spoke and he turned to look at us. "What is it?"

"I don’t know"

"Whatever it is, it can’t be good," Grayson said, not taking his eyes off the door.

"Open it," I said and they all looked at me. When no action was taken I walked down the stairs and to the door. I inhaled sharply as I gripped the door handle in my attempt to open the door but Dace’s hand was suddenly on mine stopping me.

He shook his head but it was too late. The door was already open to whoever was able to shake the entire mansion and set us on alert.

"Emma"

In a heartbeat, I glanced at the figure and met with aqua eyes.

"H-Hayden?" I rasped.

She covered her mouth with her hands and tears brimmed her eyes. "Oh my god you’re alive" She embraced me tightly and I did too. "You’re alive! Oh my god! You’re alive!" she sobbed and cried in my arms. She pulled back. "W-When she told me I didn’t believe it" she looked me up and down like I was a dream, determining if I was real or not.

"She?"

She sobbed and looked back into my eyes, I finally got the chance to scrutinize her. "D-Did you walk all the way here?" She was barefoot and she was covered in dirt. Her body was shivering from the night cold. Her olive skin held a paled texture too, her lips quivering.

"You’re freezing!" I panicked.

"I came because she told me to," she sobbed.

"Hayden" I held her hand to keep her steady. "Who?"

She glanced to my side and she stilled when she looked at Dace. A look of realization took over her features, her eyes wide and her lips parted.

"The crack" she mumbled and her eyes turned milky white.

"Hayden?"

She suddenly placed her hand on his chest, and I felt a pulse, it wasn’t my heartbeat, it was Dace. Hot and cold found my body and collided into something bone-scrunching, whatever pressure in the air became worse, and just like that it felt like some circle was broken.

What’s happening?

Dace suddenly took her hand as anger rolled off him, but I stopped him before he would hurt her, coming in between them and shielding Hayden.

I searched his eyes but they were erratic, and shaking and he was breaking a sweat, he was here but I wasn’t sure he was. He took steps backward mindlessly.

"Dace?"

Hayden’s body behind me became saggy and I swiftly turned and caught her in my arms as her body gave out.

"HAYDEN!"

~

I tucked Hayden in bed, thankfully she was sound asleep and it didn’t look like anything life-threatening. But everything that happened in the spasm of two hours was too much to grasp. How did Hayden find this place? I never knew she remained in Juneau all this time. And she remembers me? How is that even possible?

For all I know my father’s blessing made all this... caused an entire town that was once my home a place of nightmares, a place of shallow feeling and emptiness, Cruelly taking away my family from me. Driving us across the country. He takes even in his grave. He’s cruel, too cruel to even call him my father. Cassius Morelock, the legend of the vampire society, was a nightmare in my life. The very benefactor.

"Emma"

I jumped and faced the door. My body was still on high alert and my constant reverie was making me lose touch with my reality. I have to stay focused.

"Emilia?" I narrowed my eyes. I thought it was Dace. I can’t feel him, is he-

"You really need to see this," she said in a stern tone before walking out. I gulped as I rose to my feet. Glancing one more time at Hayden before stepping out of the room.

"What’s going on?" I ask.

"I think you should see this for yourself"

"See what?"

She suddenly came to a halt and I did too, my eyes suddenly went wide as I saw the company of men, and judging from their scent half of them were probably Dace’s rogues. Singe was among them too.

He had his gaze downcast before he brought his eyes to me.

"Singe?" I merely whispered.

"I remember your scent... no we remember your scent"

"What are you-"

"Five years ago when we met Dace and fought to gain his respect from us. He gave one order that night"

My heart slammed against my chest so painful that I thought it would give out.

"Protect his Female. That night when you came to look for him your scent was engraved in our minds, our hearts, and senses and we recognized you as our Alpha’s Female"

I gasped when he dropped to one knee along with the others. "Forgive us for forgetting such important detail"

"They remember you, Emma"

I darted my trembling gaze to Emilia. And then back to them.

"M-My father’s blessing... it’s gone?"

~

VANESSA

It was me. Oh ancestors. It was me. I remember everything, even the memories taken away from me by him. It was all my fault. I was the reason my sister never knew she had a son. And I was also the reason she spent five years without them.

I am the architect of their disaster.

"Vanessa"

I glanced my teary eyes at my sister. She’s crying and shaking.

"E-Emma and Grayson. Where are my children?"
