Chapter 40: Different
Chapter 40: Different
"Different?"
"Yes Emma... different," he said with more stress on the word ’Different’. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.
"Could you elaborate?"
A smirk found his lips. "I told you I can’t do that"
"Does it have to do with your family status?"
He tilts his head to the side. "Part of it"
I nodded.
"But not completely" he paused with his ardent gaze on me.
"O-Okay" I licked my dry lips. "There’s something about you that you can’t say"
"Yes"
I nodded. "I get it"
"Do you have any more questions?"
"None that I can think of right now"
"I want to take you out on a date Emma"
I backtracked. "W-What?" my eyes almost widened out of my socket.
A smile found his lips. "Yes, can I take you out on a date?"
My cheeks heated and I seemed to freeze up, words not finding my mouth and luckily the bell rang.
"This... we will continue later, let’s get to class"
~
The loud sound of my heartbeat got louder and louder in my ears. Dace Devereaux was asking me out on a date? My brain was unable to process this all at once, I didn’t expect such from him, well we have kissed, and... Oh, my face is getting so red! I think I’m coming down with a fever. Deep breaths Emma, deep breaths.
"Emma"
"Yes" I snapped at him in alert and a sweet smile found his lips.
"Classes are over"
"W-What?" I faced an almost empty class. "O-Oh" I had no idea, what subject did we just study? Fuck Emma, you need to stop acting like an idiot. My eyes spotted Owen as he left the class.
"I-I will be back okay?" I said to Dace who narrowed his eyes at me in confusion, I was pretty sure he was trying to figure me out, I was an emotional mess today.
"Okay"
I nodded as I grabbed my bag and rushed out of the seat, I turned to the hallway, my eyes searching for Owen, I just saw him right now. I whirled again and then I found him.
"Owen!" I rushed to him but stopped halfway when I saw Sarah, I quickly looked away and faced Owen.
"Can I talk to you for a second?"
"Emma," Owen said, like he didn’t expect me to come to him.
Sarah seemed to be nervous where she stood but I didn’t care, I did not come for her.
"Hey," Owen said walking toward me and I finally moved my eyes away from Sarah.
"Won’t you talk to me anymore?"
He sighed. "No Emma" he mused but I was certain he was trying to force it over. "Well you’re... pretty close with Dace and you know..."
"You two don’t get along, I get it but you still won’t tell me why"
"Are you dating him, Emma?" He asked out of the blue, giving me a strong gaze like his eyes were pleading with me not to say yes, but I didn’t have the answer to that, our relationship was not clearly defined right now, saying yes or no wasn’t gonna cut it so I remained silent.
Owen gave off a heavy sigh. "I want you to be safe Emma, I’m sure your aunt wants that too" he nods. "Yes you have the right to hang out with who you want" he took a step closer. "But I’m worried about your safety"
"Everyone is..." and it was really becoming overbearing for me. "Does it have to do with the Law Of Coexistence?"
He frowned deeply. "Who told you that?!" He half yelled. "Was it Dace?!"
"I-It doesn’t matter who told me, I just want..." I paused, licking my lips. "... to know because this doesn’t have to break our friendship does it?"
"You don’t get to say that Emma, you no longer seat with us, you-"
"It’s because of Sarah"
His eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"
"Guess she hasn’t told you guys huh" I huffed, typical of her, so Miles and Henry also saw me as a departing friend who didn’t wanna seat with them or talk with them anymore, as long Sarah was there I wasn’t sure I could approach them, she has already made me dislike her with that shit she pulled off at the mall.
"She’s right there... why don’t you ask, maybe that will give a better view," I said, turning on my heels. I spotted Dace out of the class.
"Let’s leave please"
~
"Are you okay?" Dace asked in a worried tone, finally breaking the silence in the car.
"No, I’m not..." I said in a whisper. "Owen’s my friend, but I feel like he doesn’t want that anymore"
I heard Dace make a hmm sound, there was a minute of silence until he spoke. "My fault"
I faced him blinking. "No, it’s not"
"It is," he said in a low tone. I noticed how his grip tightened on the wheels. "We’re disliked here, Emma, especially to those families..." he began making a turn to the next street. "Not just about status"
"What is there to dislike about a Devereaux?"
His lips pressed in a weak smile. "A lot of things Emma", the car stopped. "You cherish your friendship with Owen don’t you?" his eyes finally met mine and pinned me down.
"Y-Yes... He’s sort of my first friend, I don’t get what feud you guys have, but it’s not fair"
"Nothing is fair Emma. I understand you have grasped this situation quite well if you wanna keep your friend"
"I’m not gonna be apart from you Dace, I don’t think I can handle it," I said in a low tone and I noticed as his eyes softened, he leaned closer to me and placed his fingers beneath my chin.
"Me too," he said in a low huskily tone and I felt a shiver run through me.
"Everyone thinks..." I took a deep breath. "...you’re dangerous, off-limits but I don’t..." I shook my head. "...I-I don’t believe it"
"Emma"
"Dace you’re not..."
"Emma"
I sighed, meeting his eyes. "Because they’re right?"
"Yes"
"I don’t believe it"
"I know, which is silly of you" he teased.
Of course, I knew I was silly, I saw the red flags myself and so many unexplained things and yet I didn’t want to part from him, I think I’m losing my mind.
