Chapter 214: The Venatores {1}

EMMA

~

Dace didn’t come back last night and I barely slept a wink. I called but his line didn’t connect, was everything okay? He looked so tense after he was mind linked. I was worried and just hoped he was okay. Maybe I should try Emilia’s line.

I saw a glimpse of hope when her phone rang but that died when she didn’t pick up. Something was wrong. I could feel it and it got me up my toes so I kept trying it.

"Come on, pick up Emilia" I mumbled but it was a futile attempt. She didn’t answer her damn phone. "Great!"

"You good?" Owen asked me and I turned to him.

"I’m good" I mumbled watching as he made a turn toward the next block. It was after school, so I asked Owen to drive me to the covenstead, I still had some research to do.

"You don’t look good," he said. "Is your beast boyfriend not picking?"

I rolled my eyes. "Would it kill you to leave the beast part out? It sounds offensive"

He shrugged and I knew telling him wouldn’t help. That was just Owen for you.

I narrowed my eyes. "How do you know I was calling him?"

"Well you’re in a foul mood, gotta be him, and... he didn’t come to school"

"Yeah, he didn’t," I said, turning my eyes back to the road. He drove into the compound at that exact moment.

"So tell me why come to the covenstead... I thought you couldn’t wait to get out" he joked and I knew he was only trying to lighten the mood.

"Just to read... if it lets me take my mind off things," I said.

"I see..." he packed and I came down.

"Just tell me if you need anything okay?" he quickly asked as he walked beside me.

I smiled. "Thanks"

"No problem"

I ambled ahead and as I did I noticed eyes on me the moment I stepped in, I just leveled my gaze to the ground and walked past the few crowds in the hall.

Thank god there weren’t many people in the library or else I would have got more eyes on me. I sauntered straight to the shelves, tall and reaching the ceiling with hundreds of books. It was like a maze here but all I just have to do is find the Alphabet.

"H" I chanted going around and then I saw the list board and I scanned through them. "There’s no book for hunters" I mumbled, I thought Vanessa told me I could find one here, was she wrong?

"Yo Emma!"

I swirled seeing Henry holding a pile of books like they weighed nothing. "Henry"

"What are you doing here?" he mused, dropping the books back on the shelves.

I cleared my throat. "Just came for some reading that’s all"

"Oh reading, we have many pop quizzes and a project coming up I don’t think studying spells is the right time for that"

"I know" I nodded. "It’s just something I came across in my novel and it got me curious"

"Hmm, and what’s it about?" He asked with a goofy smile.

"Hunters"

He raised an eyebrow and then nodded. "Hunters" he mouths back.

"Yes... you know how curious I get about things, I just wanted to know how they are in the supernatural world"

"Well we barely have anything on them, they are phantoms" he leaned to me and then whispered. "Truth is I don’t think they exist" he leaned back.

"Oh," I mouthed.

"No one has seen one, but..." he walked to the shelves and I followed. "Trust our clan to do research and gather what we know... but not much but I’m certain this will quench your curiosity," he said as he climbed the iron stairs.

"Great," I said with a smile on my lips. I was really lucky I ran into Henry, he may be immature sometimes with all his jokes and pranks but definitely a helping friend when you need him.

I leveled my gaze to the list board placed on the particular shelf he climbed. Okay, that can’t be right.

"Um... Henry this is section ’V’ shouldn’t we be at section ’H’? You know ’H’ for Hunters?"

I heard him chuckle from the top. "Hunters are what they are called in your fantasy novels" he looked below at me. "Or in Teen wolf, you have seen the series right?"

"Of course, I have seen the series... although it was a bit scary sometimes"

"What? Scary, I don’t think so..." he said, climbing down with a book. "It’s a good series"

"Yeah" I nodded.

He jumped down when there were just two flights of stairs remaining. "Here," he gave me the brown book. "They called them hunters in movies or novels... but they are truly known as the Venatores"

"Venatores?" I said with wide eyes looking at the book with the same heading boldly written. "What’s that Latin?"

"Yep"

I blew a puff of breeze on the book because it was spooky white like it was damped in chalk. Henry coughed and I did too.

"Sorry... How long has this book been up there?" I asked between coughs.

"Long enough until you ask for it... everyone’s just focused on cool spells and hardly read history"

"Hmm"

"So what are you waiting for? Open it"

I nodded as we both walked to the seat and Henry turned on the table light for a better view.

I placed the book on the table wiping the body with my palm, at least it looked more presentable now. I unclip the book and opened the pages.

"Venator," I looked below and I saw the meaning. "Hunter"

"A family of Hunters... well they are like a Tribe. My grandma told me stories, they referred to them as savages’’

"Why?" I asked with a frown. Because Grayson was not a savage, he was just a guy into a dangerous side profession and had a very annoying mood. I almost chuckled at the thought of him but I refrained from doing so.

"Well because they are like the descendants of the Nightshades"
