Chapter 178: 167 trades, three
Thud.
The white shoes stopped at the side of the bed and stood still.
Up close, the white shoes resembled short boots, entirely in a greyish-white tone, with fine wrinkles and blackish-grey around the edges. The surface had no patterns, only some remaining faint yellow sawdust.
Li Chengyi and Yserine lay under the bed, motionless and silent.
To avoid trouble, he even held his breath for a while.
Time ticked by slowly.
The owner of the white shoes remained unmoving, standing by the bedside, seemingly unsure of what to do next.
But while he didn’t move, Yserine slowly started to stir.
She gently reached out and tapped Li Chengyi.
"Brother, I’ll try first. You follow up!" she whispered, her voice very low in Li Chengyi’s ear.
"Alright!" Li Chengyi gestured that everything was under control.
Then, he saw Yserine pluck another strand of hair from her head, a golden hair that gleamed with pure luster which she curled and gently tossed out.
Swish!
Almost the moment it was thrown, the golden hair seemed to be snatched by some white object and instantly disappeared without a trace.
"What the hell is that!?" Yserine jumped in shock. "Where’s my hair?!"
Before she could recover,
Thump.
Suddenly, something fell to the ground next to the feet of the man in white shoes.
It was a round object.
It had a bit of black hair and wore a white theatrical hat with slight rocking white short wings on both sides.
It was a human head!!
A man’s head with eyes that seemed to be painted with purple-red makeup, his pupils pitch black!
But that wasn’t all.
After that, more of the same heads kept falling from above like raindrops.
Thud, thud, thud, thud!
All of the heads rolling and bouncing on the floor.
All the heads looked identical—every single one with pitch-black eyes and circles of purple-red!
All of their eyes were focused under the bed, staring at Li Chengyi and Yserine.
"Dare to steal from me, I’ll kill you!!"
Heserine’s skin began to turn from snow white to charred black, as traces of burn marks started to appear on her face.
Her eyes bled tears of blood, and her body abruptly transformed into a black shadow, rushing from under the bed.
Ahhhhh!
A piercing scream instantly filled the entire room.
Shaking.
Stinging.
Weakness.
All three sensations flooded into Li Chengyi’s mind at once.
And this was only because he was positioned behind, not directly attacked by Yserine.
Then he saw, amidst the screaming, black hands suddenly grasping at the heads.
The moment they were touched, the heads disappeared in the blink of an eye.
But just as suddenly, Yserine’s screaming halted, as if something was gripping her throat.
"Yserine!" Li Chengyi’s eyes sharpened as he surged powerfully from under the bed.
Emerging, finally standing on the room’s floor,
He could clearly see what was happening.
The bizarre man in the white attire and hat was continuously growing heads from his neck.
The heads spilled out like marbles, or bounce like balls, falling densely from his neck opening.
Some fell to the ground, others hit the wall and bounced back.
Heads were floating everywhere in the surrounding air.
And they were all laughing.
Laughing like they saw prey or food—eerie and terrifying.
At that moment, Yserine was being held by one hand of the man, grasped tightly at the neck, unable to make a sound.
In an instant, Li Chengyi’s mind raced with various solutions.
Glint Flash wouldn’t work, as it might hurt Yserine.
Radiance Field was also not an option. Its range was too wide.
So...
In a flash, his body was covered in black Armor.
Countless Feilian petals appeared and consolidated, forming into Floral Dress as he donned it.
Swish!!
He immediately clawed towards the man’s arm.
With his current base strength of three tons, at full burst, plus the amplification from Floral Dress, his explosive power could now exceed ten tons.
The black claw landed on the man’s forearm in the blink of an eye.
Thud.
Strangely, the arm felt light and airy, parting effortlessly like cutting through a piece of soft, hollow clay.
And not just that,
The man in the white attire began to deflate like a leaking balloon, hissing air out.
In an instant, he became flatter and smaller.
In less than two seconds, his whole body lay on the ground, and along with all the surrounding heads, they burst into white foam and vanished.
Huff... Huff...
Yserine stood in place, restored to her original form, only now with a distinctive bruise on her otherwise snow-white neck.
"Brother, run!!" She grabbed Li Chengyi and hurriedly dove under the bed.
The two cooperated to quickly crawl under the bed and move towards the other side.
In the rush,
Li Chengyi heard a creak from behind him, the sound of a door opening in that eerie room.
It seemed someone had returned from outside.
"That thing! It’s the Faceless Scholar! I knew we shouldn’t have come out today!" Yserine moved her hands quickly, crawling towards the far end of the bed with a look of panic on her face.
Strangely enough, the normally short space under the bed seemed endless as they crawled, taking a long time to traverse.
Li Chengyi felt a chill in his heart and turned his head to look back.
He saw the man with white shoes, who had already returned to his original state, squatting at the edge of the bed, smiling as he watched the two.
Thump!
In the blink of an eye, the man’s head split open like a dividing grape, a line of blood appearing down the center, and instantaneously splitting into two complete, identical heads.
It wasn’t split in half, but bizarrely grew into two complete, identical heads.
Immediately after,
the two heads continued to divide, turning into four.
Then eight, sixteen, thirty-two...
In just a few seconds, the heads sprouted like multiplying cells or suddenly blooming flowers on the neck of the man in white.
A large cluster rapidly formed.
The dense mass of heads resembled a bunch of grapes, perched atop his neck.
All the heads looked the same, their gazes fixed on the two people crawling.
"What the hell is this thing!?" Li Chengyi felt like he was going to vomit out last night’s dinner from revulsion.
He struggled to turn back around and launched a Glint Flash in that direction.
Boom!!!
Brilliant gold light exploded under the bed, instantly striking the strange man at the center of the cluster of heads on his neck.
Under the immense force of the impact, the strange man was finally pushed back a bit.
Li Chengyi and Yserine seemed to break free from some kind of restriction, and the length under the bed no longer stretched.
In an instant, the two crawled out from under the bed, back into the original room.
Thud!!
Li Chengyi grabbed the iron bed and flipped it over.
The entire bed was lifted high, flung into the air, hitting the wall, and then swiftly sliding down.
All was quiet...
"Brother... Next time we encounter that guy, don’t make a sound, he’ll become immune a second time!" Yserine still had a trace of black on her cheeks.
"What do you mean!?" Li Chengyi was startled.
"At first, I didn’t recognize it either. I realized when he grabbed my neck: that guy, I call him the Faceless Scholar. He’s a monster that appeared a few years ago," Yserine explained, catching her breath.
"I’ve encountered him... Any attack you land on him works at first. But that’s only the first time. The second time, it will be completely ineffective."
"That powerful!?" Li Chengyi was somewhat shocked.
"That’s why I told you to run, Brother. That guy’s troublesome. He’s one of those undying beings from the Black Sea. If you confront him, you’ll only be at a disadvantage," Yserine explained.
"That is indeed dangerous," Li Chengyi nodded with a frown, "Why is he called the Faceless Scholar?"
"Because he has no face. That face you saw, he stole it. And as for Scholar, of course, it’s because he has a lot of books," Yserine replied.
"All right... Then why is he attacking us?" Li Chengyi asked again.
"Don’t know," Yserine shook her head, "Maybe, in his eyes, that wasn’t an attack? Just a greeting?" she guessed.
"...That’s actually possible," Li Chengyi looked at the bed overturned on the ground, "So can I exchange this thing?" He gestured with the Heart of Greed in his hand.
It looked just like a can of fish from the outside, not at all appealing.
"No rush, wait a few minutes," Yserine said earnestly.
"Right. I haven’t seen your real body for a long time; where is she?" Li Chengyi suddenly asked.
"I’ve grown up," Yserine claimed proudly.
"And then?"
"Then she definitely couldn’t beat me," Heserine continued.
"...So what?" Li Chengyi was speechless.
"So she is here," Heserine patted her chest. "Instead of saying she is the real me, it’s better to say I am. She is just the part of me that wants to forget everything."
"Okay," Li Chengyi finally understood; this person might have integrated the her from before.
The her in the white dress was just the self that wanted to escape reality, while the current her was the real her.
No wonder she had suddenly grown a little.
If it was about eating food to grow, hadn’t she eaten anything in all those years before? Why hadn’t she grown over so many years, but now she had suddenly grown?
They waited another few minutes.
"Should be okay now, Brother," she said earnestly.
"Let me do it."
Li Chengyi went over, pulled the iron bed back to its original position, and settled it in place.
It was fortunate he hadn’t laid out a bedspread there, or it would have been a total mess by now.
"Again," Yserine was the first to crawl under the bed.
Li Chengyi followed close behind.
The two lay side by side under the bed again, looking toward the other end.
Everything was dark on that side, clearly having moved away from the Faceless Scholar’s location.
"Hey, Yserine, why can your hair exchange things on the other side? Can mine do that too?" Li Chengyi suddenly thought of this question.
"Ah, that’s simple," Yserine laughed, somewhat smug, "Only my hair can, Brother, yours can’t~~"
"Why not?"
"Because my original hair was burned off, gone, this is the gold hair I made afterwards," she said with pride.
"Real gold?" Li Chengyi was surprised.
"And generally, normal gold isn’t in much demand, it has to be special, well... I’m not too clear on the details, they only want it after I’ve worn it on my body for a while," Yserine answered.
"Can I bring gold from outside in here?" Li Chengyi asked.
"I guess not. The lady before tried to do that, but nobody wanted it," Yserine shook her head.
Li Chengyi pondered thoughtfully.
"What about silver?"
