Chapter 158: Just a cute little girl
Michael left shortly after that, staying back long enough to meet his other researchers in his department before he left Andrew on his own. Andrew had to walk him to the elevators to let him leave since Michael didn’t have a badge, but after that, Andrew was all Richard’s.
Richard set Andrew to work once he was back after dropping Michael off. They were simple, but boring tasks. At least, it would have been for anyone who hadn’t worked on anything in over a month. Organise basic data for a specific trial? Andrew was all over it.
He loved organising, and it gave him something to focus on as the hours passed. He only asked Richard clarifying questions once or twice when he came upon a strange recording, but beyond that, time crept forward.
Soon, it was the end of the day and the girls who had been in the trail room pretty much the whole time besides when they had greeted Michael, stepped out and stretched.
"Well, that’s the end of your first day. How did you like it, Dr. Nice?" It was Dr. Cox who asked, her blue eyes bright behind her glasses. Dr. Piper was busy making sure to spray herself down with a pheromone suppressant spray. It was more like a spray to get rid of the scent of pheromones. It was useful, but slightly faulty. It only worked on those who didn’t emit pheromones. So, betas, furniture, things of that nature.
"I think my first day was good." Andrew responded. "Uneventful, which is nice. I’ve been experiencing a lot of things recently, so it’s nice to have what I would consider a normal day." Andrew grinned. "It’s also nice to use my brain. I was going a little stir crazy being cooped up inside of the house for a month while my pheromones stabilized." Dr. Cox nodded.
"I can’t imagine what that would be like. I’m sorry to hear that, but don’t worry! We’ll be putting you to good use soon! Either way, I have to go pick up my daughter from her daycare, see everyone tomorrow!" Dr. Cox waved as she headed out, grabbing her bag and jacket as she left. She seemed in a rush and Andrew furrowed her brows.
"Is the daycare far away?" Andrew asked and Richard sighed.
"Well, her daughter got into some trouble at the one closer to here, so she has to go to one further away." Andrew had no idea what that meant.
"So...how old is her daughter if she already got into trouble?" Dr. Piper growled, and Andrew was taken aback.
"It wasn’t Bella’s fault, it was the fault of those snooty tootie people who she went to the daycare with." She complained. "They pulled on Bella’s hair and stole her bows that Ainsley had worked so hard to put in her hair. Bella lost it. She’s only three, so she can’t regulate her actions that well. The parents kicked up a fuss." Andrew froze. He could feel his blood boil for the little baby already.
"How long ago was this?" Andrew asked. Dr. Piper pushed her hair out of her face, her face scowling. Andrew still thought she looked pretty as she scowled. She kind of reminded him of one of the girls from the cafe he used to frequent. Small and cute, but still aggressive.
"It was only a few weeks ago. She won’t ask for help either, so don’t offer it." Andrew frowned.
"That’s rather unfortunate. Do you know what the name of the daycare was? Was it a good one?" Richard piped up to answer Andrew’s question this time.
"Dr. Cox forked over a pretty penny to get her daughter into that daycare. It’s meant for the rich of the rich. It’s in that really good neighbourhood. You know, where the rich basically get a permit to live there and each plot is handed down generation to generation." Andrew felt a sneaking suspicion run down his spine and he made a soft, contemplative noise.
"Oh. What’s the name?" Andrew asked and Richard glanced at him.
"You aren’t thinking about doing anything rash, are you?" He asked and Andrew gave Richard a smile.
"Richard, did you know what my Mom did for work?" Andrew asked as he gathered the materials he had been handed that day, and took off the white lab coat he’d been given when he’d arrived and hung in on the back of his chair. Even Dr. Piper was giving him a suspicious look.
"Your Mom was in...accounting, I believe?" Andrew nodded at his hesitant tone.
"Yup, and she either owned or worked in a flower shop before that. I don’t remember because I was so young, but yeah. She started the company I thought, on her own. Apparently, I was wrong." Andrew told him with a small smile. "Don’t worry, and just tell me the name of the daycare. I won’t get involved if Dr. Cox doesn’t want me to, but I don’t think it’s fair for others to go unpunished. I don’t mind wielding some power if it means that some form of justice will be given out." Andrew gave them both a thumbs up. "I promise, it’s nothing bad. I also won’t be using Max’s power. It’ll be all my own."
Dr. Piper stared at him, cautious. She had finished spraying herself and she stared at Andrew for a long, thoughtful moment.
"It’s the Brighter Days daycare. It’s the base floor of one of those skyscrapers in that area. Are you sure you’re okay with this? Ainsley isn’t known for being forgiving if others interfere without her consent." Andrew grinned.
"I doubt even she would be able to say anything if I told them I was scouting potential places for my child. Who would question a true alpha?" Andrew scoffed, rolling his own eyes as Richard burst into laughter.
"Fuck! I almost forgot that! You’re just...you, so I forgot that everyone else is going to see the big teeth, the height, and the way your eyes go amber every once in a while and they’ll freak out." Richard’s words had Dr. Piper widening her eyes as well.
"My god, I seemed to have forgotten as well. That’s...almost a talent, Dr. Nice." Andrew smiled.
"I’ve been a beta for a long, long time before this, Dr. Piper. I was always tall, like Richard is, so I learned ways to make others comfortable around me. If I stop smiling," Andrew dropped his happy-go-lucky expression and watched as Dr. Piper gulped, "I tend to get a little less of a...warm reception." Andrew cleared his throat, before he smiled. "Alrighty, I’m going to keep that in mind, probably won’t do anything about it now, but look forward to my report once I’m allowed to do so." Andrew told them, pushing his chair into his desk and smiling at them. "I have to go now, have a wonderful evening. I’ll see you all tomorrow." Andrew told them and they smiled, waving goodbye to him as Andrew left the department.
Andrew was thoughtful as he headed for the elevators and tried to think of a reason he could get in to check out a daycare. He’d probably want to go when they either did drop offs or pick ups, which limited the days he could do that. He also needed a good reason.
Sure, he could use the potential kid card, but he didn’t know-
He gasped, covering his mouth as he got to the lobby and headed for the next set of elevators. He pressed the button, going up, and waited as he watched the numbers tick down. He did know someone! But would Amir be willing to help? How bad was his morning sickness still? Gosh, he would hate to get him involved and it did not turn out well.
Ben would kill him.
No, maybe he shouldn’t get him involved. It would be awful if Ben got the wrong idea again, even for a second. Ben had looked ready to kill him. Andrew didn’t want to go through that again.
The doors opened, emptying of the employees going down and Andrew waited until it was empty to step in and swipe his card, selecting the top floor where Maxwell’s office was.
Either way, it was all kinds of fucked up that the parents got away with this, and so did the kids. Andrew didn’t want to let that stand, just for the kids sake. If they didn’t learn that this kind of behaviour wasn’t cool now, they would grow up into little rich monsters. Cause it was clear that their parents weren’t teaching them proper life lessons. They were letting them get away with this behaviour.
Poor Dr. Cox and her daughter. Dr. Piper called her Bella? What a cute name for a probably cute little girl. Andrew didn’t want to make it harder for her. He wondered how long they had gone to that daycare before they had to transfer. Andrew also wondered if she got her money back from them too.
Andrew bet that she hadn’t. Fuck. Should he bring this up to Maxwell? Maxwell was sure to gather all the intel on the daycare in a night, but Andrew knew that Dr. Cox would probably hate that because Dr. Piper said so.
Ugh. He didn’t want to keep anything from Maxwell, so he’d just have to preface it with the fact that he couldn’t help him. No doubt it would upset him, but he’d also be understanding. Maxwell knew what loyalty meant. And hey, maybe Andrew could bring up the lunch thing too. Or the lack of good food services in the building. Andrew felt like he’d only been there for a day, and his head was already full of big ideas.
He hoped Maxwell didn’t mind.
