Chapter 99: Giving in (4)
"I leave you for a moment and you have tried to force yourself to sleep. I know that you aren’t sleeping, Selene. It is too early even for you," Xavier said as he dressed himself.
The servants who brought the water for him were all gone now leaving him with Selene just as he liked it.
Selene should know this little trick wouldn’t work on him.
"Well, if you truly are asleep, should I come give you a goodnight kiss?" Xavier asked.
"Stay away from me."
Xavier smiled when he heard the response. It was far from when he wanted to sleep since he loved walking around at night but the woman in his bed was changing his night activities.
Not that he minded it.
Xavier made his way to the bed to lay with Selene which he knew she might not be happy about. He got as close to her as he possibly could before she moved further to the edge.
Xavier smiled, amused by how far she would go. Would she sleep on the floor or run around to the other empty side of the bed to get away from him? He almost wanted to test it out.
Xavier placed his hand on her waist to stop her from moving so she wouldn’t fall off the bed.
"Why do you come to bed so early just to get up when I have fallen asleep? I know you do it," Selene said, opening her eyes to look out the window to the side of the bed.
"Why else other than to see that you are well off to sleep? I’ve wondered if you go to bed at these hours in hopes of avoiding me. You might be among the few of our kind to rest at this hour like a human," said Xavier.
"I have gotten used to taking care of the home in the early hours and then resting at some hours of the night. Usually, I don’t sleep this early but there’s nothing to do," Selene replied.
She hadn’t figured out what to do with her time.
"I will fix it so I am sleeping during the day. I should be awake to see what the servants are doing at this hour. I find myself unable to sleep now so perhaps I should get up," Selene said, thinking of what to do.
Xavier held her closely so she would not get up. "You are already comfortable and you do not need to change how you sleep. If you find yourself bored at night there are plenty of places around the town open just for us at this hour. I can take you."
"Thank you but I am hardly in the mood to meet with any more of our peers as yet. I am enjoying how quiet it is here. I don’t think I will accept too many invitations from other ladies," said Selene.
"There are plenty of establishments to provide a private setting for us and I hope you will not let how Vivienne might have acted today turn you against meeting friends."
"It will not," Selene replied. "I will do my best to not be in the same place as the queen. She is married but I have a feeling she will be in trouble because of her feelings for you."
"You have spoken of her feelings quite a bit. Does it upset you?" Xavier asked.
Selene frowned. Why wouldn’t it? Who wanted the queen to target them?
"It doesn’t matter to me," Selene answered.
"I already said you are an awful liar, Selene. I do not need to see your face to know it. Do not let her feelings bother you since they do not matter. I only care for you," Xavier assured Selene.
"You do not have to say that to please me. I said it doesn’t matter to me," Selene said but there was some relief from it.
"Oh, but I must. I cannot have you thinking you will lose me to anyone. I will only be for you but I would love to hear you say I am only to belong to you. Why is it so hard for you to say you want me to yourself?" Xavier asked.
"It is up to you to do as you want," Selene said since her words could never stop anyone from doing as they like. "I don’t possess your power to control others."
"You must trust me, Selene. Only when you fully trust me can you open your heart to me. My words are never empty and they will not start to be that way with you. Have I not shown enough how I care for you? Only you?" Xavier asked, curious as to what she thought of his advances.
Selene knew he had shown how much he cared for her. Xavier took it upon himself to take care of Oliver for her and showed up to a gathering he disliked just for her.
"Oh," Selene winced after Xavier bit her. "Why must you bite me?"
"Because you did not answer me and I have been tempted to do it all night. I wish to know if I have not shown you enough. I must know so I can change my advances," said Xavier.
Selene looked down at the hand around her waist. How hadn’t she noticed it right away when he placed it there? "You have shown me enough. Now, could you please move your hand? There is plenty of room on the other side of the bed."
"I quite like this side," Xavier replied, keeping his hand as it was.
"Then I will move so you can lay here," Selene offered.
"Then I will like the side you are on," came Xavier’s quick response. "You must answer me."
Selene sighed. "I have already said that I won’t place what Gabriel did on you so I am not letting the queen’s feelings bother me or think that you would go to anyone. I do trust you. I would not be lying in this bed if I did not."
Selene continued, "I will answer you soon about your feelings. I just need to check that my heart is in the right place and it isn’t that I just want to be intimate with you. I do not want to disappoint you since you are waiting for me."
"It is quite hard to make me sad, Selene. I can take it if you do not feel for me as I do for you. I am fine with being as we are now. I only ask now that you keep trusting me," said Xavier.
Selene nodded her head, agreeing to it. "Just so you know, the queen spoke of a ball coming up to celebrate the men who helped with the war. Do we have to attend?"
She didn’t know if it was important for the Blackthorns to make an appearance.
Xavier rested his head on Selene’s shoulder. "They would like for us to attend but we will not. There is always trouble when too many vampires gather in the palace and I would not like to see you in the midst of it. Do not concern yourself about attending."
"Good. I didn’t want to go. Must you be so close?" Selene asked, trying to pry his hand from her waist. There was hardly any room for her which shouldn’t happen considering how large the bed was.
"I must," Xavier replied. "The faster you go to sleep the sooner I will get up to do my work but I do encourage you to stay away so I can keep holding you."
Selene closed her eyes once more to force herself to sleep.
