Chapter 147: Followed (3)
"Which Blackthorn has a servant who can shapeshift? Is it your father?" Selene guessed.
Life was too quiet now so Nathaniel had to be up to something.
"My father might have a few but I know this one isn’t his. He’s been watching me since the day we took back your home. He’s a servant to my grandfather," Xavier replied.
This stumped Selene. She wasn’t expecting to hear it was his grandfather since he was resting now.
"Your grandfather? Has he woken up?" Selene asked, nervous about having to run into the old gentleman.
Xavier handed the horse back off to a servant. "Not that I know. If he were awake, he would have been here now with my father at his side. Many of his servants are still awake and keep watch of his home. My father gathering the family must have caught their attention so now they are following me and most likely, following my father."
"I see. So, how are you with your grandfather? Would he bring trouble like your father is doing? Do I need to be concerned if he were to wake?" Selene wondered, not ready to meet with such an influential vampire.
The older the vampire was the scarier they could be.
"No. I’ve stayed out of his way and he has stayed out of mine. He has some interest in who I would marry but he never bothered me about it. It is my father who is trying to make up for marrying my mother. If my grandfather wakes, it can go either way for us," Xavier said, not knowing what to expect.
"How?"
"He favours my father and me. It depends on what kind of mood he is in and what his plans are. The real problem would be my great-grandfather waking up. For the short time I saw him, he claimed to be fond of me but it is he who drives the five families to marry amongst each other," Xavier explained, annoyed he would need to deal with this.
Nathaniel was creating too much noise so it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the servants of those who slept now were to wake their masters to solve the current conflict.
"Now I am a bit nervous. I wasn’t concerned about your father but your grandfather and great-grandfather are a different story. I hope none of this wakes my relatives," Selene said, imagining the chaos there would be.
The Harrison who rested would not be pleased to hear of what happened to their name.
Xavier was intrigued by this. "Who from your family rests?"
"My grandparents and great-grandparents. We are not to disturb them as well. Oh, these are the ones from my father’s side. I have only met my grandfather from my mother’s side but he is a wanderer. I don’t think he is asleep now. I worry about him returning only to find that she is gone," Selene said, now realising an issue she must prepare for.
"I can’t remember much about your mother’s side of the family," Xavier said, drawing a blank.
"They do not live in this town. My grandfather said I would need to travel far to see where he lived but he also warned me not to make the trip so I didn’t spend a lot of time with my mother’s family. Maybe the humans near there weren’t so welcoming," said Selene.
Xavier saw it more as Selene’s grandfather trying to protect her from something.
Nothing about Selene’s cousin seemed to be special. Then again, he would have to cut Trevor with a holy weapon to test it. If it wasn’t a skill Selene inherited from the Harrisons then the answer was with her mother’s family.
Vampires who can heal from holy weapons should stay away from others. There were many Xavier knew to be foolish to think drinking the blood of someone like Selene could leave the same effects on them.
"Do you want to see him? I can track him down for you," Xavier offered, knowing his answers might be with her grandfather.
"No," Selene shook her head. "If he comes here then he has to face the fact that his daughter is gone. I know he will be angry I did not let him know of it but I don’t want him to go through what I did. He should live in bliss."
"Enough about our families," Selene said, taking hold of Xavier’s hand.
They returned inside where it should be harder for Xavier to be watched.
"What do we do now? Must I worry about a bat trying to spy on us in our room? The windows are not covered at night and we have," Selene paused, thinking of everything they had done. "Had you not noticed it, we could have done the unthinkable before one of your grandfather’s servants. This is why it is better to stay inside."
Xavier closed his eyes for a few seconds, his lips folded into a thin line. He was going to kill that bat with his bare hands and after he did so, he was going to feed it to one of the hounds outside.
"I will address it so you do not need to worry about being watched. We mustn’t allow this to spoil the night," Xavier said, trying to save the night.
"I will not but it certainly stopped what I had in mind. Perhaps another night you will show me the land. As for now, I will enjoy your company at dinner. I need blood," Selene said, smiling while Xavier frowned.
Selene hugged Xavier to cheer him up. "I hope you do well at getting rid of the little follower because the next time the moment falls upon us again, I will not want us to be disturbed. I am quite ready and waiting to feel your love."
Selene also didn’t like that the mood was ruined. She was ready to enjoy her time with Xavier outside but now she would be concerned with a Blackthorn servant spying on them. While it was disappointing, Selene knew they would have another chance and when they did, she would fully enjoy it.
"Will you sulk or will you join me for dinner in our room? We can be alone there but first, I must get changed out of this," Selene said, peering down at her attire.
"I will be kind to offer you a helping hand," Xavier replied, moving on.
"You seem hellbent on ridding Agnes of her job. I will allow it just this once for you to help me," Selene decided but knew this might not be the last time. "On another day when we are both free from duties, would you go for a horse ride with me? We can have a picnic or not. It might not be something you care to do."
"I am ready whenever you need me," Xavier raised Selene’s hand to kiss it.
Selene looked away from Xavier. "It is not good for me that you are such a sweet talker. Please get rid of the servant following you and I just might continue where we left off during our picnic."
Xavier walked with Selene back to their room. "You are full of many surprises. You surprised me with the suggestion of going outside. You would be comfortable there but not in the theatre? There are private spaces you can buy to not be seen by others."
Selene pulled her hand away from Xavier’s. "Please tell me how you know this."
"I have visited the theatre alone. I admire the art," Xavier replied.
Selene wanted to wipe the cheeky smile off his face but all she could do was walk away. "We are not going there."
"What if I were to buy all the seats so it would only be us?"
"Maybe on a good day I would allow it," Selene said, seeing this as a better option.
Hearing this answer, the night wasn’t spoiled for Xavier since he would make plans to get the theatre just for him and Selene.
