Chapter 146: Followed (2)

"You need to take a break now, Selene. I admire your willingness to try over and over again but I will stop here for the night," Xavier said as he took his seat beside Selene.

Selene laid on the floor which somehow felt as wonderful as her bed. "I will lay here for a while until I think my back feels better. I’m sure there is more you could do to overpower me but I already see why no one has been able to stop you. How did you learn to be so fast?"

"Getting away from the family meetings my father wanted me to attend was good practice. Practice is what you need, Selene. Every pureblood can be fast, it is up to you to train to be faster. It is expected to keep up with your training and not rely on the mere fact you are a pureblood. You will get there," Xavier said, confident she would.

Selene showed great determination. Some might find this boring and give up, relying on being a pureblood since no one would bother them. The recent attacks showed that was hardly the case.

Xavier raked his fingers through Selene’s hair, trying to fix it so it appeared as it was when she entered.

"I am lucky to not sweat since my hair would not be in the best state for you to touch. Is it bad?" Selene asked, touching the ends of a few strands of hair.

"It is not," Xavier replied, his fingers sliding through her hair. "You look lovely."

"I don’t know if I can believe your words. I have fallen to the floor many times which I have lost count for. You are seeing me not at my greatest know. It is unfair how well you look now as if you were not fighting against me. I don’t like it," Selene said, sitting up.

It meant she didn’t manage to make Xavier exhaust himself even a little.

Xavier laughed. "You want me to look bad now? I’m afraid I might not be able to find a way to give you what you want."

"Your confidence also annoys me now. Where is your shirt?" Selene asked, looking around the room for it. She was ready to go elsewhere. "Did you walk here like this?"

"Oh, right. I forgot you do not want me to distract the maids. They have been working here long before you arrived and saw me like this. They still got their jobs done," Xavier replied.

The maids might stare but not long enough to have Harold or Gertrude realise it. Xavier was certain the maids feared those two more than they feared him.

"You have forgotten what I said. Since your shirt is too big for me, I should discard it and walk back to my room. Would you like that?" Selene asked.

Xavier’s response was a chuckle as he leaned forward to kiss her neck. "Go on," he encouraged her. "I want to see it."

Selene started to unbutton the shirt. He would learn a good lesson today to see how fair she would have everything between them.

Xavier made no attempts to stop Selene so she reached the last button. Thinking he doubted her, Selene stood up to leave but Xavier held her hand.

"Do you believe me now that I would go that far?" Selene asked.

Xavier stood up, still holding her hand. "I never doubted you from the start. I only wanted to see you unbutton it yourself. It was wrong of me."

"You are a cruel man," Selene said but she did not mean it. "I don’t mind you looking like this when you train but not casually walking around the estate. I see this for my eyes only as I will make it so my body is only seen by you."

"Agnes has seen it. Do I need to be concerned about your sight? My shirt is placed in the corner. Harold is the one who folded it and put it to the side since it bothered him," said Xavier. "He doesn’t fair well when something seems out of place."

Selene looked again and this time, she noticed the shirt. "I missed it. You could have told me it was there."

"To miss all the fun? Never," Xavier said, enjoying the view before him.

Selene started to button the shirt again. "I should have known there was a great plot at play here. What will I do now that you are finished training me for the night? The night is still young so there must be something we can do."

"You must be careful when asking what we can busy ourselves with. You were speaking to Agnes about a horse. Since you are dressed to ride one that is what we will do now," Xavier said, helping Selene with the buttons so they could leave sooner. "You have not seen all the land under our name."

Selene wondered if the feeling she got when Xavier referred to the estate as theirs was her falling for him even more. Since she arrived, Xavier had not failed to make it known it was her home just as much as it was his.

"Will anyone be around where we are going?" Selene asked.

"There should be guards around so you will be safe," Xavier replied, failing to notice the intentions behind her question.

Selene touched his hand to have him pay more attention to her and not the buttons. "I would not mind if we were to be the only ones around. It is up to you to decide if we will be alone."

Xavier thought he misunderstood her at first but soon realised he didn’t. Selene was open to playing a very dangerous game tonight and without question, he was going to join in on it.

"Come with me," Xavier said, leading the way for them to go out.

They first headed to the stables for a horse to use and whilst they were there, Xavier gave an order that the guards were to avoid an area.

Xavier mounted the horse first and then offered his hand to help Selene up. He then took off for a spot he knew they would be well out of sight to do as they pleased.

Selene enjoyed looking around the land since her tour of the estate hadn’t gone this far. The further she rode the more it dawned on her how large the estate was.

When the horse stopped, Selene looked back to see the estate but it wasn’t in sight.

"This is all the land for the estate? No one resides here?" Selene asked, surprised by the size of the land which was not used.

"No. Those who use my land live further down away from my gates. There is plenty of land for you to do as you please. You can build whatever you need to make the estate more comfortable for you. Stay still. I will help you down," Xavier said, carefully getting off the horse first.

Xavier stuck out his arms to Selene so she could jump down but before she could do so, he said, "We’re heading back."

"What why?" Selene asked, puzzled as to why they had to leave already. "Are we not alone?"

"No," Xavier replied as he mounted the horse again. "We are not. We’ll continue our night inside."

Selene was forced to hold on quickly as Xavier commanded the horse to leave faster than they arrived. "Do you know who it is?"

"Yes. A servant of a Blackthorn who can shapeshift into a bat," Xavier replied, knowing he would have to address this soon. "He is harmless but I will not let him watch us."
