"Your offer is too kind, but I need help finding a suitor and I am not interested in marriage like Juliana is. So, you should give her all your attention. I want to be free a little longer," said Natalie.
"Take my advice that you could still be married and free. Plenty are doing it," Vivienne said, thinking of Darius.
"Are you free?" Natalie asked, knowing that was not the case. Why should she take advice from a woman who wasn’t free? "I hope one day you are truly free. You are good at facing many things but as your friends, we worry."
"Again, thank you but you do not need to worry. I am not concerned about my husband taking other women to the palace. If he could do it then I can do it as well," Vivienne shared.
"You would take other men to your chamber?" Juliana whispered, not believing Vivienne.
Vivienne leaned forward in Juliana’s direction to ask, "Why are you whispering when they can all hear you? If I am not afraid to say it then you shouldn’t be afraid of repeating it. You are bothering me today and I do not like it."
Juliana didn’t want to say it out loud because of the king. Vivienne should be smart to know the king would lose his mind if Vivienne had a lover. It felt taboo to speak of Vivienne and Xavier.
Juliana smiled but it didn’t do well to mask her worry. "Will the king be fine with you having another man around?"
"Of course he will. Why would it matter only what he wants? I am equally as important as he is or have you forgotten what family I come from?" Vivienne asked.
"No," Juliana shook her head. "I could never forget. I’m sure you will be fine. After all, your father would never allow anyone to hurt you. Not even the king."
"Right. So again, stop worrying about me and worry about yourself. Though you are my friends, you both might be considered by my husband to enter the palace as his mistresses. If you value our friendship as you claim then you would turn away the messenger before he gets a word out. I will be watching you," Vivienne said as she stood up.
Juliana shared a look with Natalie. How many times must they say they did not want the king? Who wanted to be disrespected and be next to Vivienne as she plotted to kill you?
Juliana wanted more power and status but not like this. She wanted to live for a long time to enjoy it.
Juliana stood up to follow Vivienne. "You don’t have to worry about us. It is those other women who have always been eyeing the king that you must pay attention to. Would you like me to keep an eye on them so you know who might be considered?"
Vivienne found it to be useless. "What for? I cannot stop them from coming here unless I harm them and we are not to harm our kind. I have accepted it so you should too. I will walk you both a little way out and then leave you. I have better things to do than sit around and talk."
Vivienne led the way for her friends to leave the palace whilst searching for Theresa who was gone too long for her liking. Something was wrong but Vivienne didn’t want to think her fears were true.
Natalie searched for any sight of the king. It was unfortunate that she couldn’t be near him at the ball and would have to entertain another man to silence Juliana’s questioning.
"I will only go this far. Send them off for me," Vivienne instructed the other maids.
Natalie looked back to see how far they had walked from. They didn’t make it more than ten steps away from where they previously sat. "Thank you for being so kind to walk us here. We must go now, Juliana."
Natalie walked off first so could get away from Vivienne. Juliana had more to say but she followed Natalie to avoid upsetting Vivienne.
Vivienne changed direction for the room Darius liked to use when he thought he could hide from her. She wanted to believe he wouldn’t betray her like this but Darius had broken her trust too many times for Vivienne to have some hope now.
Vivienne moved as quickly as she believed she could in the moment. In truth, she could have gotten there a lot faster but she didn’t want to stumble upon the truth sooner.
When Vivienne came across the door she hated to see, rather than have the guards announce her, Vivienne forced her away inside.
"You," Vivienne said, her eyes going to the bed first and then to her husband. "I told you that she is off-limits. She is my maid!" Vivienne yelled, slamming the door shut behind her.
"I know that she is your maid. It doesn’t change that she is a beautiful woman and that she came here willingly-"
"She didn’t come to you willingly. She did not want to be here. Have you touched her?" Vivienne asked, furious.
Vivienne went to the bed where Theresa did not move. She found some comfort in not smelling too much blood in the room so Theresa was still alive but she worried about what Theresa went through.
Vivienne hesitated to touch Theresa when she reached the bed. "What did you do to her?"
Darius continued to button his shirt since nothing more would happen now that Vivienne was here. "Nothing that she didn’t want to happen. She came here by herself. You must stop thinking that I force these women to be here. She isn’t different from the others."
Vivienne covered Theresa and then stood up to make her way to Darius. She didn’t hold back this time and slapped him. He deserved many more but this was all she could do now. "You forced her to be here. She always avoided your advances and you dragged her here. Look at what you did to her," she pointed to the bed.
Vivienne couldn’t look Theresa’s way. How could she when it was her husband who did this to her? Out of everyone here, Vivienne wanted to protect Theresa the most since she was always loyal and had no interest in Darius.
Unfortunately, Theresa had too much of Darius’s interest in her to be protected.
"If my wife had brought me the woman I had been asking for then I wouldn’t need to do this. You should have brought Selene to me long ago-"
"Do not put this on me!" Vivienne yelled, hitting his chest as she spoke. "Your interest in that woman has nothing to do with my maid. This is all on you and the bastard you are. You go around pulling down women who want nothing to do with you and ruin their lives."
Darius grabbed Vivienne’s hands so she could not hit him again. "Are you speaking about your maid or you?"
Vivienne pulled her hands out of Darius’s hold. "Both of us. You went too far this time. She is not even awake."
Darius did not mind it. "Kill her just as you have done with the others. She is only a mixed-blood. We can make more by gathering a few humans. It is partly your fault she is here since you have not brought me Selene and you spoke of having lovers."
