Chapter 133: Weapons (3)
Xavier had one more thing to be annoyed about now since he was being stalked by a vampire with the skill to shapeshift. He had an idea of who it was that might be following him and if his guess was true then it might turn things in his favour concerning his father.
Xavier pulled his hand out of Lawrence’s side and used a handkerchief to wipe off the blood. He stepped away from Lawrence, letting him suffer in peace.
It was dangerous how quickly these weapons worked which meant he had no choice but to get involved in hunting down who was behind the attacks. He wouldn’t have time to enjoy his marriage with Selene if he didn’t.
The thought of having to one day be away from Selene to deal with the attackers angered Xavier. Unfortunately, the only person to take his anger out on was Lawrence so Xavier retrieved the dagger to stab Lawrence once more.
"I should move out of town and take her with me. Shouldn’t I?" Xavier asked the dying man. He had a home outside the town where Selene could stay but he didn’t like the thought of her being out of reach from him.
Xavier walked around Lawrence to search for anything that would be of any use to him whether it be how Lawrence was luring women here or what Darius was up to in the palace.
Xavier sat in Lawrence’s seat as Lawrence tried to make his way to the door. "Don’t bother going for help since your king wasn’t smart enough to look for a way to heal wounds created by holy weapons. I wonder if you regret not telling the king to wise up. Do you? I want to know."
Xavier wasn’t fortunate to get his answer as Lawrence dropped to the floor. If it was true that vampires went straight to the underworld, the demons were going to get a nosy newcomer.
Before he could be caught by a servant since the smell of vampire blood filled the room, Xavier got up from the chair and headed to the big window. He opened it and stepped off to head for the sky.
Instead of returning to the estate or to the market to wait for Selene, Xavier decided to visit a friend. He landed on the balcony of one of the rooms in Isaac’s home. It was always a good day when he got to bless Isaac with his presence.
It wasn’t hard to find Isaac since the man was either complaining about something concerning the court or painting.
Xavier walked around the home as if he owned it. Since he permitted Isaac to enter the estate as he liked, Xavier found it only fair he got to venture into Isaac’s home as he liked.
Xavier received the same welcome he always got when he finally found Isaac.
"Why are you here? Who let you in? Did you break in?" Isaac asked, both startled and annoyed by Xavier’s presence.
"You don’t have any servants, Isaac. That seems to be a common trait for men from the court. I didn’t break in since I am always welcomed here," said Xavier.
"For the last time, you are not. If I have to think of ways to keep you out then you aren’t welcome here. I’m starting to think I need to get rid of having so many windows and doors. Why do you reek of blood? Who did you kill now? Wait," Isaac covered his ears. "I don’t want to know."
"Lawrence," Xavier revealed. "Not long ago."
Isaac still managed to hear what Xavier said. "Lawrence? Why? How did you kill him? He’s just going to heal."
"With this," Xavier showed the dagger. "It’s a weapon made with holy water and blessed by a priest. Just touching it is burning my skin so, do you have something for me to wrap it in? We’ll need to get rid of the scent of blood."
"That’s impossible," Isaac muttered, staring at the weapon.
"It’s right here. Is your vision turning poor?" Xavier asked.
"I am in disbelief, you bastard!"
"Bastard?" Xavier repeated. "Should I try it out on you?"
Isaac started to take off his shirt and when he was done, he took the dagger from Xavier’s hands to wrap it in his shirt.
"We are in your home, Isaac. You could have found cloth to wrap it in or are you trying to flaunt yourself before me?" Xavier asked.
"Are you giving me this?" Isaac asked, needing it to prove his point to the king.
"No. That was quite pricey and since so many purebloods have an interest in my wife, it will be useful for the future. I brought it here for you to see that they are being made again. You need to have the guards start searching all the churches but plan it out carefully so the people we want aren’t alerted," said Xavier.
"We’ve already searched the churches. They were the first place we looked but it was hard to get a good look since it stings to enter a church. I will try to get the order to search churches again but I can’t promise it will happen. They are all useless," Isaac said, still annoyed by his talk with the king. "I might leave the court."
Isaac continued, "Either from the king’s order I must leave or having enough and leaving by myself. These attacks are the last of the king’s concerns and if I mention the church, he might suggest burning them down again."
Isaac recalled Darius stating that the kingdom didn’t need churches since they were sacred grounds that vampires could not enter. He was surprised Darius had not forbidden humans from praying.
"You cannot leave now. I need someone I can trust on the inside. I will help you to find the ones behind this," Xavier offered.
"You will?" Isaac replied, intrigued by this. "Why the sudden interest now? Wait. Is it because you want to protect your wife?"
"Would you prefer that I don’t protect her?" Xavier asked, taking the shirt and dagger from Isaac’s hands.
"No. You should do that to be a good husband. I am only now realising how much Selene was the answer to all my problems. Perhaps I should get close to her. How is she?" Isaac questioned, still curious about her.
"She does not need any more friends. I need to get cleaned up before I head home. Lend me one of your rooms," Xavier said and then walked by Isaac to find a room himself.
"Can’t you go elsewhere to wash up? Find a nice stream to bathe in. I can’t have the town guards coming to my doors. The king is already obsessed with me speaking to him since he believes we are friends-"
"We are friends," Xavier said, for the first time agreeing with Darius. "It is time you stop acting as though you do not enjoy my company. Who else will you complain about the court to and trust that it will not get back to them?"
Isaac could not respond since it was true. Xavier hated most of the men in court so it was easy to rant to him. Isaac also liked that Xavier was going to look into the attacks since then the issue might be dealt with but he wouldn’t tell Xavier he liked it.
Instead, Isaac said, "I’ll give you one drink and then send you back to your wife."
