Chapter 118: Visitor with news (2)

As the sun set on the town, Selene kept up with where Xavier was so he wouldn’t ruin the surprise of her having their dinner placed in their room. She later tasked Harold, who was more than happy, to remain at Xavier’s side to keep him away until it was time for dinner.

In his study, Xavier looked up from the paper in his hands to Harold standing still staring at him like he was some kind of play or famous art.

"For the last hour or so I have done my best to avoid your gaze but I cannot ignore it any longer. I see now why the other servants sometimes call you a phantom. What is it? What has Selene put you up to?" Xavier asked, knowing she was involved.

Who else would convince Harold to be away from his duties around the time of dinner?

Harold didn’t want to respond to give away Selene’s plans.

"So," Xavier leaned back on his chair. ’She has stolen you from me. There was a time when you would have told me what you knew. Now you are keeping secrets for Selene."

"I am still loyal to you," Harold promised.

"But you will not tell why you were sent here by Selene?" Xavier asked, only to receive silence. "So, there is a surprise waiting for me. It cannot be what I am thinking of since you are in on it. I have been away from my wife for too long."

Xavier decided it was time to see Selene. He was curious if she would be able to look him in the eye after what happened.

"Have you spoken about me to my wife?" Xavier inquired.

"You have told me to respond to any questions the lady might have. She was asking about the rumors and spoke of how calm you are. I have told her about the effects of your body going back to normal. You are not always like this," said Harold.

"Like what?" Xavier asked, needing more of an explanation.

"You tend to stay away from other purebloods but by now, you would have dealt with everyone interfering with you and the lady. You are not a cruel man in my eyes but you do not have patience for others who trouble you. You have always gotten problems out of the way before they greatly affect you. I told the lady not to fear you," Harold said, hoping this helped.

"It would be disappointing if she started to fear me. Be careful with what you say, Harold. My body has returned to normal as of this morning so I did not need you to inform Selene about it. Still, I am a happy husband to be cared for by her. I must see what she is up to now," Xavier said, getting up to leave the room.

"Forgive me if I said too much. I always want to be honest with the lady."

"That is good but consider there are things I do not want her to worry about. What would I look like showing my wife a temper? Do not look sad since I am not angry with you. After all, you kept me away from ruining the surprise," said Xavier.

Xavier knew Harold would dwell on this a little longer but he couldn’t focus on the butler now. He was too excited to see what his wonderful wife was up to.

It couldn’t be that Selene intended to seduce him. Still, Xavier would love to be surprised by her seduction. All he could do was wait for such surprises.

Xavier reached the door just as Agnes was rushing out. He couldn’t help seeing her as a little mouse. One day he might give her a fright to see if she would squeak.

Xavier entered the room which was prepared with food on a small table and wine. He never saw Selene as much as a drinker. "What have I done to deserve this wonderful treatment? Or is it that you are not ready to sit before the maids?"

"I thought it would be nice to have our dinner here. Then we might go straight to bed. To sleep," Selene clarified before he thought of something else. "I know I said I would fix my sleep but we have been all around the estate all day. We should rest when we are done."

Xavier closed the door behind him. "There’s nothing wrong with me. I know what Harold told you but you don’t need to worry. It has all worn off."

Selene didn’t believe him. "How am I to believe you? The morning when you stayed in bed, you said it was to make Agnes comfortable but now I suspect it was due to your body being tired. I don’t know much about going into a deep slumber but there will not be a day I wake to you not moving, right?"

"No. That has never happened to anyone. If you do not believe me, you can take care of me until you are certain I am well," Xavier proposed.

"I will keep an eye on you. Even the strong can have their moments of being vulnerable. Are you certain it has worn off and you are not pushing yourself for me?" Selene asked.

"I am. I did not want to concern you with it because I feel fine. Is that the only reason you placed our dinner here? Nothing more like being romantic?" Xavier asked, wanting more for her.

"Here I was worried about your body and you are looking for romance. I thought it would be nice for us to eat without being disturbed. I know you do not care for human food that much but I hope it will please you. There is also wine. The best kind," Selene said, taking a second look at the bottle.

"Now I am wishing there was something wrong with me for you to care for me," said Xavier.

"Do not wish that upon yourself. I never want to see you not well. You are Xavier Blackthorn so I ask that you remain the powerful man I know you to be. No, you stay there," Selene stepped away from Xavier. "I have not yet gotten it out of my head."

"It?"

"Sit and I will serve your dinner," Selene changed the conversation. "I will act as- Did you hear that?"

Selene listened closely to the noise she heard. "That strangely sounded like the first time I heard your mother scream. Is she here?" She wondered, going out to the balcony to have a look.

Xavier grabbed her hand to stop her. "We should focus on dinner."

"You want me to ignore your mother?" Selene replied.

Xavier nodded his head. "Yes. It is quite easy if you pretend you did not hear her. We should not trouble the servants to have to warm up the food. My mother is a smart woman who knows to come back another time."

"When you are like this, it is understandable why your mother thinks you dislike her. Strangely, we haven’t seen or heard from your family in a while. She might have brought us important news we shouldn’t ignore. I will see her with or without you," Selene decided, leaving to meet with Josephine.

As long as Nathaniel was not around, Selene trusted they could have a good talk with Josephine.
