Chapter 117: Visitor with news (1)

"You may employ someone to deal with these matters for you. You are tiring yourself trying to do it alone," said Gabriel.

"It is the least I can do. Why spend that money when it can go toward something else? I quite like being so involved in all the planning. It makes me excited to think about the guests’ reactions. This is a chance for me to prove myself to others," Cassandra said, closing the book she used as a journal. "Have I not been giving you enough of my attention?"

"You have," Gabriel replied, holding his hand out to her.

Cassandra stood up, placing her hand on his before she sat down on his lap. "Still, I will give you more of my time now. The groom needs to be showered with love as well."

Gabriel gazed at her hand, twisting the ring he got for her. "I have been thinking of how wonderful you are. It would be even more wonderful if we were to have children soon. Don’t be so alarmed," he said, misunderstanding her reaction. "There is still a chance they would be like you."

Cassandra wished to know who put the idea of them having children in his head. Was it just her bad luck that after sharing her fear about this with Bryce, Gabriel now spoke about it?

She wasn’t ready to carry a child inside of her for Gabriel.

"I want to share the joy of bringing life into the world with you but I also want to enjoy our early marriage days with you. We don’t have to rush having children. They will come to us naturally. Still, it pleases my heart to know you think of these things. I will do my best when the time comes," Cassandra replied, kissing his cheek.

"You will be a good mother. I heard you have received countless invitations to gatherings around the town. They are recognising you as the lady you are now. Do well and I am certain in time you will gain the attention of the queen," said Gabriel.

"The queen?" Cassandra laughed, not believing it. "Why would she take interest in me? I have a long way to go before the royals take notice of me. For now, let them focus on you entering the palace. You will do well there."

"Oh!" Their talk was disturbed by a maid.

Gabriel glared at the small woman. "This better be good."

’A Fiona Carleton is requesting an audience with you. Should I welcome her in or turn her away?"

"Carleton?" Gabriel repeated the name. "Oliver’s wife? What would she be doing here? I will go to her."

"Who is it?" Cassandra asked, hearing the name for the first time.

"She is a friend of Selene. Strangely, she has come here. I was making use of her husband," said Gabriel.

Gabriel looked forward to what Fiona came to do. Was she here to ask for more money on behalf of Oliver or to yell at him for employing her husband to go against Selene? Fiona should know by now that he didn’t care for what she thought. She wasn’t a welcome guest here any longer.

Cassandra followed Gabriel to see this friend of Selene. What trouble was Selene sending to their home now?

When Gabriel went out to speak to Fiona, he first noticed how frantic she appeared.

"You must help me," Fiona said, causing Gabriel to smile. "My husband has gone missing and it is tied to what you paid him to do. Selene is abusing the power given to her by her husband’s name. I’m sure it was her who had made Oliver disappear. The guards didn’t question her enough."

"It is something I experienced lately but what I don’t understand is why you came to me. Your time would be better used if you went to the town guards to plead that they look for him or go to the court. Coming to me won’t solve anything. We are not close," said Gabriel.

"I know that I was closer to Selene but my husband considered you a friend. Thanks to you, we have managed to get out of our troubles. If you would be so kind as to help me find Oliver," Fiona stopped when Gabriel started to laugh.

This was a serious matter for her which shouldn’t be laughed at. Fiona had to bite her tongue since she understood why Gabriel was being this way. She had always been on Selene’s side in the past.

"What do you take me for to ask that I go around looking for your husband? Go to the town guards, not me. I am not a man to deal with those little tasks. Besides, you were both Selene’s friends so I don’t need to help you. You mean nothing to me. Get away from my home," Gabriel ordered Fiona.

Gabriel used Oliver once and Oliver had the nerve to think they were friends.

"Wait!" Fiona exclaimed, needing him to hear her out. "Oliver has always seen you as a friend. He has always cared for you more than he cared for Selene. You know it."

Gabriel looked down on the pitiful woman. "Then your husband was a fool. I advised her to stop helping the likes of you. You should have held onto her more. I don’t have to help you and if you don’t stop this, I am well within my right to kill you."

"Gabriel," Cassandra touched his arm. "She is worried for her husband’s life. You went through this with Selene. We must have some pity."

Fiona had her first look at the woman she heard about. Never did she think that this human would be so kind to her.

Cassandra held Fiona’s hands to comfort her. "Gabriel did not have much luck with what happened to his mother so we cannot help you. We have been asked to let the accusations rest since there wasn’t proof but maybe you will have some luck if you go to the right people in the court."

"They will not listen to me. The guards speak of attacks around the town. They see that as more important than searching for Oliver," said Fiona.

Cassandra grew curious about what exactly the guards said about these attacks. How much did they know?

Gabriel grabbed Cassandra’s hand, pulling her away from Fiona. "Don’t get involved with her. Leave," he ordered Fiona.

He did not want anything to do with those involved with Selene and if Gabriel needed to order Fiona to leave again, he would kill her.

"I can still help you. I know many of Selene’s secrets. If you help me, I can tell you all of them," Fiona offered.

Gabriel guided Cassandra behind him so she could return inside. Her kindness didn’t need to go to someone like this. "You and your husband’s usefulness to me has run out. He’s probably somewhere dead so you have other things to worry about instead of being here."

"Please!" Fiona cried, seeing this as her last bit of hope. No one hated Selene more than Gabriel to go after her. To go against Xavier. "I can’t be without my husband. I don’t know what to do without Oliver."

"If it’s to that point then die to be with him," Gabriel suggested. The town didn’t need more useless people like this around. They were a waste of space.

Gabriel took Cassandra inside to get away from Fiona. This was a lesson to be more careful about the people he employed.

Fiona stood in silence, taking in the evil suggestion Gabriel gave her. How could he get Oliver’s help and then turn his back on him now?

This wasn’t fair. Why wasn’t there anyone at her side to help her?

"I need your help," Fiona said, hoping that by some chance Gabriel would change his mind and come back to her but he didn’t. Fiona was left alone once more, tasked with finding what happened to her husband.
