Chapter 102: Plans (3)

Cassandra sat down, taking the moment to be off her feet. She had been walking around constantly since Lucinda’s death since there was much to do. Had Cassandra known it would be this much trouble, she would have tried to keep Lucinda alive so she would only be bedridden.

There wasn’t any talk about a wedding and Gabriel didn’t visit the palace. Everything had taken too many steps back and now it would take longer to carry out her plans.

Cassandra wanted to blame Bryce but she was the one who asked for him to kill Lucinda. Why couldn’t it be George to take care of burying Lucinda? Why did he get to sulk over biting her?

"I am tired," Cassandra muttered.

Gabriel had not turned to ignore her or to be cold after losing his mother but she did not enjoy how many times he wanted to lay with her. How many times he wanted to bite her.

There was always the fear at the back of her mind that he would try to turn her into what he was but there was some relief when she realised he could not turn her. Gabriel would need to find a pureblood who could and Cassandra doubted one would waste their time with Gabriel.

Gabriel was not as important as he thought he was and it annoyed her that he was taking his time with the king’s wish. He should already be in a palace with a suitable position so they would be invited there regularly.

Cassandra sat up when she heard footsteps. At this hour, it could only be Gabriel returning from wherever he ran off.

"Why aren’t you sleeping?" Gabriel asked as soon as he entered the bedroom.

"I was worried about you. I cannot sleep when you are still out. Let me," Cassandra offered, getting up from the bed to take off his coat. "Should I get the servants to bring you warm water?"

"No," Gabriel shook his head. "It is too late to trouble them now. You should rest more. You’ve been busy helping me with my mother and I owe you for it. I would be lost without your help."

"I looked at Lucinda as my mother since I lost mine. I’m sure she is somewhere wonderful. Her spirit will always be around us and you will make her proud. I know it," said Cassandra.

Gabriel rested his head on Cassandra’s shoulder. This was what he needed most now especially when he wasn’t speaking to his father. His father made a careless mistake. Gabriel was almost certain that the bite prevented his mother from pushing through her wounds.

"We will continue as planned to wed in two days. You and my mother had already gotten far ahead with the planning. I made a promise to marry you and I will do so," Gabriel said, knowing they couldn’t wait much longer.

It wasn’t right to have Cassandra here, not as his wife when there wasn’t anything stopping them from getting married.

Cassandra was surprised to hear it would happen so soon. She thought he would be so caught up with his mother and Selene that she would have to wait a little longer. "This is wonderful," she hugged him. "Sadly, your mother could not be here but she blessed us with all her ideas. I know it doesn’t matter to you but I would like to visit the church to pray for her."

Gabriel wasn’t fond of churches but he didn’t want to keep Cassandra from doing such a kind act. "You can take the carriage and go. I am thinking of employing a guard for you. We cannot be too careful."

"I understand. I wish I could have a word with the town guards and the men in court for not finding who did this to your mother. It is hardly a coincidence that after seeing Selene, your mother was attacked. They know she had something to do with it but they are scared of Lord Blackthorn. What will we do if he targets you?" Cassandra asked, lowering her head to appear pitiful.

"I have already lost too many people in my life. I cannot see you hurt or lose you. Someone must do something about Lord Blackthorn. He will allow her to act on anger and cover up what she does. She should only be angry with me. I do not mind being punished," Cassandra said.

"Nonsense," Gabriel replied, tired of hearing Cassandra think she needed to be punished.

Cassandra palmed his face. "I got in the way of your marriage. I did find out later on you were married and stuck by you. I should have left. I took full responsibility for not leaving. I always place myself in her shoes to understand why she acts the way she does. She is a heartbroken woman acting on anger."

Gabriel moved Cassandra’s hands from his face. "Do not try to understand that woman. I already told you that you weren’t at fault. Instead of thinking about her, you should think about what we spoke of. Have you decided on becoming a vampire? It will make you stronger."

Cassandra bit her tongue. She wanted to lash out at him for mentioning that again but she knew that was not the way to get through to him. "I understand why you would want me to turn but it doesn’t always go well. I could lose myself and have to be killed by the guards. I know I am weak in this body I have but I like it."

"Your mother adored having another person like her around. Another human. I want to continue to be as she adored me. I want to stay as I am now. I hope that doesn’t upset you," said Cassandra.

Gabriel was disappointed she would not turn but from the way she put it, he understood why she didn’t want to. His mother had in fact bonded with her over not being vampires. "I was careless. I hadn’t thought about what it would mean for you."

"You were thinking of my safety after a great tragedy. I love that you care for me to think of how to keep me safe. It is not only you who has to make your mother proud. I also have to do it. There is much I must improve on while you work your way up in the palace. At this time, we must lean on each other," Cassandra said, letting Gabriel lean his face onto her warm palm.

Gabriel raised her hand to kiss it. "We will grow together. For now, let us focus on our wedding and my entering the palace. I will tell the king to give me a place in the palace tomorrow."

"I think it is time you are there near the king. Forgive me but what will you do about Selene? With what she did," said Cassandra.

Was Gabriel going to keep searching for proof which did not exist?

"They have already said they could not prove it was her since her story matches what others say. I have been warned not to speak of her being the one behind it but I know it is her. I will not depend on the court to avenge my mother. Entering the palace tomorrow is my first step to dealing with it myself," Gabriel shared.

It would take more than he wanted it to but in time, he would grow to have the power to have Selene face consequences for what she did.

"It is a wonderful plan," Cassandra said, tiptoeing to kiss Gabriel. It was about time he focused on the palace.
