Chapter 132: Unexpected Encounter (1)
"Wow... Sawyer, you’re indeed a lazy investor. How can you not remember the companies you invest in?" Abigail asked, clearly amazed.
"Well, I don’t care where I invest. I only care about performance, including whether the company employees where I invested are happy working there and how much dividends I receive annually. In that order of priority, of course," Sawyer grinned, tousling her hair affectionately.
Abigail narrowed her eyes at him for a few more seconds before expressing her thoughts.
"By the way, Sawyer, you promised me that you would invest in my company, right?" Abigail smiled when she saw him nod excitedly.
She continued, "Mr. Jones, I hope you won’t forget about my small business and your promise to teach me how to manage it!"
"I won’t forget it. I promise to pay extra attention to this investment—the kind of attention I have never given before," he replied with a smile, pulling her into his arms.
They stood still, embracing each other, before Sawyer continued, "Abby, did you say you were tired? Go to sleep. I will wake you up when Aaron arrives—"
Suddenly, a knock at the door distracted them.
Sawyer turned to look at the door and was shocked to see someone who shouldn’t be there smiling at him.
"G-Grandma?" Sawyer called out in surprise, shocking Abigail, who was still in his arms.
"Why are you here, Grandma?" he asked, utterly at a loss for words. He couldn’t understand why his Grandma was at this hospital, which didn’t belong to the Jones family. How did she even know he was in this room?
"Sawyer—" Abigail’s soft, nervous voice pulled Sawyer back from his shock. He turned to see her and was surprised to see she wore the same expression as him: shock and confusion.
Holding her cold hand tightly, Sawyer whispered, "Don’t worry; my Grandma is kind. I’ll introduce you to her later..."
He leaned closer and kissed her forehead, hoping to ease her anxiety. However, he didn’t realize that his loving gesture only made her more anxious. She froze in place, scolding him with a worried look.
Despite her expression, Sawyer didn’t notice. He stood up from the bed and walked over to the doorway where his Grandma stood.
As he approached, he faintly scolded whoever might have informed his Grandma about his presence in the room.
He deliberately positioned himself to block her line of sight as she tried to catch a glimpse of Abigail.
"Sawyer, the woman is—"
"Let’s talk in the living room, Grandma." Sawyer didn’t give his grandmother a chance to see Abigail. He needed to give Abigail time to prepare herself because he could feel how shocked she was to see his Grandma there, just like he was.
After closing the door behind him, Sawyer took his grandmother’s hand and slowly led her to the seating area.
Martha Dawson smiled, looking at her grandson, who seemed to avoid her question. She didn’t press him further; she followed him and sat on the sofa.
Once he settled in opposite her, Martha asked, "Why did you hide your girlfriend from me? Don’t tell me she isn’t the one you mentioned, your future wife?" she said, narrowing her eyes in suspicion.
Martha began worrying that the woman he wanted to marry was not in the bedroom.
"She is... Come on, Grandma... I only have one woman in my heart, Grandma. Please—" Sawyer let out a faint sigh. He was still puzzled by his grandmother’s sudden appearance.
He hadn’t planned to introduce Abigail to his family members this fast. Still, now it seemed impossible to continue hiding her from his Grandma. She would be disappointed if he insisted on not introducing them now, right!?
"I knew it! I knew it must be her..." Martha said, her eyes beaming with excitement. She was thrilled to meet the woman who could finally melt her grandson’s cold heart.
"But this isn’t right, Grandma. You can’t just appear out of nowhere like this. My girlfriend might find it frightening..." Sawyer let out a deep sigh.
Martha was taken aback by his response. She hadn’t considered how her sudden arrival would affect the girl. Overjoyed to hear that Sawyer was in the hospital with his girlfriend, she had rushed over without thinking it through.
"Oh my... Sawyer, I’m so sorry, dear. I was so excited to see her that I hurried here without calling you first..." Martha felt terrible for potentially scaring the girl.
Seeing her grandson looking stressed only heightened her anxiety.
"What should I do now? Should I leave without meeting her?"
Martha asked nervously, clenching her hands around her bag. While she wanted to meet Sawyer’s girlfriend, she didn’t want to make her uncomfortable with this unexpected encounter.
Sawyer glanced at the bedroom door before responding to his Grandma.
"Grandma, she might think you don’t like her if you leave without meeting her. Let her have a moment to prepare before I officially introduce you..."
Martha’s gloominess faded instantly, and the light in her eyes became clear.
"Oh dear Sawyer, I won’t leave without saying a word or two to her! I’ll wait. I’m not in a rush," Martha said excitedly, looking at Sawyer as she continued, "But, Sawyer, I already told your grandpa about this. He insisted on inviting her to dinner with us tonight."
Her eyes beamed with anticipation at the thought of Sawyer’s girl coming to their house.
Sawyer was rendered speechless. How could his Grandma think so quickly? She had even arranged a dinner with them! Suddenly, he felt dizzy.
Now Sawyer was curious: how did his Grandma know he was here with Abigail?
Sawyer could no longer hold back his curiosity. He cleared his throat, trying to distract himself from his grandmother’s joyful demeanor; she looked so happy about meeting Abigail.
"Grandma, did you send someone to follow me? Is that why you know I’m here with my girlfriend?" This was the only question that came to his mind.
"What? Oh, my dear Sawyer, why would I do that?" Martha replied immediately, "How could I send someone to follow you? No! I’m not..."
As he observed his grandmother’s innocent expression, Sawyer felt confused. He could clearly see that she was telling the truth.
