Chapter 127: Honest To Her

Chapter 127: Honest To Her

Only then did Abigail realize that the middle-aged man with gray hair by the door was the same person who had brought her breakfast.

’Paul? Wait! I know that name and face. Why is my homeowner’s butler here? And did he just call Sawyer "Master"?’

Abigail wondered, furrowing her brows as she tried to catch another glimpse of the man. Still, the door closed again before she could see him.

"Sawyer?"

"Yes," he replied, forcing a smile; however, his smile quickly faded when he heard her next question.

"Why did I see my homeowner’s butler, Paul, here? And why did he call you ’Master’? What is he doing here? Are you renting this house too?" she asked, confused to see the man who had brought her breakfast the day before in Sawyer’s house.

Sawyer nearly laughed at her last question, but he took a deep breath and tried to appear serious.

"Abby, there’s something I need to tell you. But before that, I apologize if you find it unacceptable..." Sawyer hesitated when he saw her frown deepen. He struggled to find the right words, hoping not to shock her with the news he was about to share.

"Sawyer, please don’t make me worry," Abigail said, her fists clenched tightly. She felt a sense of dread, fearing that he had made a significant mistake.

Looking at her frightened expression, he smiled gently and placed his hand over hers. This was the right moment to tell her the truth.

"I’m your homeowner, Abby. Paul is my butler, Brody is my bodyguard, and Ronan Peters is my assistant; he manages my business affairs outside."

Sawyer paused again, giving her a chance to respond. However, she remained silent, gasping in shock.

Squeezing her hand gently, he continued, "I apologize for not telling you sooner. To be honest, I didn’t know you were renting the room upstairs. I only learned about it the first time I drove you home."

Abigail was even more stunned to hear that, but she said nothing. She needed to let him finish.

"I don’t want you to feel scared or think of me as a stalker, so I asked my staff not to mention anything about me. I pretended to be a guest in my own house."

He chuckled, remembering how he always pretended to drive away from his house.

"Well, I didn’t plan to hide this from you for long, Abby. But I was waiting for the right moment to tell you..."

Sawyer took a deep breath and lowered his head, trying to hide his gloominess. He regretted telling her so late. What happened to her yesterday could have been avoided if he had revealed his identity sooner. Brody could have helped her more quickly than waiting for her to signal for help first.

"Sawyer? What happened?" Abigail asked worriedly when she saw him lower his head, trying to avoid her. But she still noticed his expression slowly change; he looked sad and mad at the same time.

He slowly lifted his head to see her again, "Abby, I’m sorry for telling you so late. If I had told you sooner about my identity as your homeowner, that bastard would not have tried to harm you. The police would not have troubled you with their useless interrogation because Brody would have rushed to help you there..."

Sawyer tried to speak casually, but his trembling tone was enough to show how angry he was now.

After voicing what had been bothering him all night since returning to the city and waiting for her to wake up, Sawyer felt slightly relieved as his anger began to fade. He looked at their entwined hands, a relieved smile spreading across his lips.

Sawyer waited for Abigail to respond for a few more seconds, hoping she would say something.

However, she said nothing.

The silence worried him; he feared Abigail might be upset with him for lying to her.

He gazed into her eyes and said, "Abby, please say something. Don’t ignore me. Please..."

Abigail smiled as she pulled her hand from his grip and placed it on his cheek. She lovingly rubbed his cheek with her thumb. When she saw his worry slowly fade, she smiled at him.

She didn’t rush to speak because so many images flooded her mind, like a video clip, piecing together the thoughts that had troubled her since she first moved to this place:

Mr. Peters charged a low house rent but then suddenly revised the contract to allow her to accept guests.

Brody unexpectedly offered her a ride every day, especially when she needed to go to work.

Out of nowhere, Paul came to her house with breakfast, saying the homeowner was celebrating something and wanted to share it with her. And what happened at the police station confirmed everything; how could Brody and his lawyer show up just five minutes after she sent a text?

Now, all her confusion was cleared away.

However, she felt foolish. How could she have never suspected any of this? Even Sawyer had given her hints whenever she worried about her homeowner.

’Geez, Abby! You’re so slow...’ she thought, amused by her own cluelessness.

Taking a deep sigh, Abigail smiled at him.

"I’m not ignoring you, Sawyer. I’m just too shocked to process everything you just said. How could we live together? And how could I end up renting your place? It’s hard to believe you weren’t involved in this situation."

"I know. I was also shocked when I found out..." Sawyer chuckled as he explained how his staff was trying to play matchmaker. He revealed that Ethan had arranged for her to rent the rooftop apartment, which his assistant supposedly rented.

Sawyer didn’t even remember renting that place to Ronan. However, he recently recalled losing a bet to Ronan during a pool game, which allowed him to stay upstairs for five years—though he still had to pay rent.

Abigail felt speechless and amused hearing how Sawyer’s people tried to play matchmaker for them.

"Now you understand why I had to hide my identity from you, right?" Sawyer asked, taking her hand and kissing it gently.

"Yeah..."
