Chapter 57: Solved a few other problems
Jun Wu Xiao’s explanations and solutions deeply moved the assembled ministers and the emperor. They had reached the twilight of their lives, yet only now did they realize that they still did not fully understand humanity. But it was not too late, for they had finally begun to grasp it.
"Thank you for explaining." the emperor said.
"We thank you for making us understand." the ministers bowed and expressed their gratitude.
Initially, their attitude was one of awe towards a legendary existence, a symbol of supreme power. Now, their attitude had transformed into genuine respect.
Suddenly, the emperor thought of another issue and asked:
"Do you know how to foster economic growth?"
Jun Wu Xiao’s mouth twitched upon hearing this. He had to take money from Chu Wu, so how could he know? Discussing weapons was simple, but the economy of all mankind was beyond him. He quickly responded:
"I am truly poor, the money I use is Chu Wu’s, so I know not what to say on this matter."
The image of being a know-it-all that he maintained from the beginning of the discussion until now has been completely shattered.
Jun Wu Xiao, seeing his friends laughing, scowled and snorted:
"Hmph, what are you laughing at? I have resolved so many issues so far. It doesn’t matter if I don’t know this one."
"Ha ha, alright. You’re the best, the most capable. Go on and tackle the next issue, let us watch." Yue Guang laughed and said.
Though the emperor and the ministers were slightly disappointed, they thought about it and agreed it made sense. After all, it was unreasonable for one person to be capable of everything. The emperor then said:
"What about the unhealthy competition then? I’ve seen cases where people sabotage their rivals to make them perform worse. How should we handle such matters?"
Jun Wu Xiao thought for a moment and then said:
"We must teach people a principle: what’s the point of being better than others? Truly meaningful is being better than yourself from yesterday.
I know people enjoy feeling superior to others and enjoy the feeling of defeating others. But that feeling is merely fleeting, lasting only a few hours or until the next day, and life goes on. That momentary comfort is completely useless in the days that follow.
But why do that? If you want to be mean to others, you will also have to waste time harming them. But spending effort and the results you get is meaningless. If you receive nonsense then why not use that effort to develop yourself? If we become better every day than yesterday, then at the end of our lives we will definitely do many extraordinary things."
Everyone in the court also nodded in agreement. Although using dirty tricks can be considered a quick way to bring down the opponent, what does that mean to oneself? It’s a waste of time and effort, and it doesn’t make your life any more meaningful.
"That settles the matter then. Let’s incorporate this into the mandatory education curriculum. Now, there is another issue troubling our kingdom—the problem of crime. How should we address this?"
Jun Wu Xiao had no hesitation in his response:
"This is not difficult to resolve. Perhaps these criminals simply act out of ignorance of their true nature. Their actions are instinctual. Guidance is all they need. However, those who have offended must still face punishment. Do you remember the black box I once mentioned?"
As the Emperor recalled, he had indeed heard about it, but in that era, metal was used to unify the world so it could not be done. He said:
"I understand, you mean to let them experience solitude, silence, and tastelessness, right? But how long should this last?"
Jun Wu Xiao thought for a moment. Keeping them too long would just be a drain on the state’s resources without any benefit. He said:
"I think less than a year should suffice. But the punishment should be altered slightly. It shouldn’t be completely devoid of stimulation. Once a day, someone should visit and speak to the prisoners about the nature of humanity. The only sound they hear all day will carry significant meaning. This will also ensure they pay more attention and potentially achieve a higher impact. Our goal in confining them is not merely to punish but to help them understand their true selves. After all, being human, they should have the chance to understand themselves. Keeping them longer would just be a financial burden on the state."
Everyone nodded, this seemed reasonable. After all, they didn’t have surplus funds to support people doing nothing.
"Thank you for your suggestion. But what if a criminal remains stubborn and reoffends after release?" the emperor asked.
Jun Wu Xiao’s gaze suddenly turned cold, making everyone present shiver. He said:
"If they still don’t understand after all that has been said, then it can only be concluded that they are not human. And if they are not human and still wish to disrupt human society, then they must be eradicated."
Everyone nodded again. If a chance was given and not taken, then truly, they were not human. Elimination was the best option as it also safeguarded the populace.
Jun Wu Xiao’s presence today truly aided the royal court in resolving many issues. Furthermore, his involvement did more than just address problems. He also changed the way of thinking of the people here.
If you can’t solve a problem, change your way of thinking, maybe it will help you successfully solve the problem. The ministers are also in this case.
"I have understood. Now let us discuss the economic issues facing our kingdom." the emperor said.
From that moment on, the seven of them could only listen as they had no expertise to contribute. Perhaps Chu Wu would have had the opportunity to speak on the initial issue, but Jun Wu Xiao had already handled all of that, leaving him with nothing to do.
After some time, everything finally came to an end. The emperor said:
"Today’s discussion went very well. Thank you, dear ministers and our new friends, for your assistance."
"Ha ha, it was nothing. Helping you has also been my pleasure. Moreover, to meet a good emperor like you is an honor for me." Jun Wu Xiao responded.
"Then we ask your leave to depart from here." Chu Wu said.
The emperor nodded, then allowed everyone to leave. He himself was escorted back to his residence.
